MARIANA RIVALS "TAKE/CHROMA" CASSETTE OUT NOW

CMM are incredibly excited to release the new Mariana Rivals E.P. as a limited edition cassette. The California/Connecticut based synth pop unit deliver a pair of new tracks that are absolutely delightful. A wash of shimmering synths ring throughout the heavy groove based feel of “Take”. It’s pumping bassline and laid back rhythm are simply second to none while the mysterious yet soulful vocals put everything over the top and get you singing along in no time. “Chroma” is a bit darker and more subliminal. It’s got a heavy feel to it that builds throughout and keeps you guessing at what will come next as it’s cunning dynamics and atmospheric presence is as beautiful as it is enlightening. STIV: THE LIFE AND TIMES OF A DEAD BOY COMING IN 2018

STIV: The Life and Times Of A Dead Boy is an upcoming feature-length documentary on legendary punk icon, Stiv Bators. It will be the first film ever made about the rowdy and controversial performer, and his life will be documented through archive footage, photography, music and all-new interviews with the people who knew him. Stiv Bators was one of the early American punk pioneers, and is primarily known for his work with The Dead Boys and The Lords Of the New Church. Classic songs like "Sonic Reducer" and "Ain't It Fun" continue to inspire fans and musicians from all walks of life. Acclaimed director Danny Garcia will helm the project, and already has numerous punk documentaries under his belt, such as The Rise and Fall Of The Clash, Looking For Johnny, and Sad Vacation: The Last Days Of Sid and Nancy. Following in the same gritty underground style that has become Garcia's hallmark, STIV: The documentary has a tentative release date of May 2018.

AURA BLAZE HARD AT WORK ON NEW ALBUM

New Jersey psychedelic rock outfit Auza Blaze are in full studio mode, working on a new album and I must say I can't wait to hear it. Their 2015 self titled debut was absolutely genius as it's rich, mind bending atmospherics matched with incredible songwriting made it one of my favorite albums of the year. Aura Blaze guru Rhode Rachel has been posting in depth updates on the record and options and philosophies on recording which I find incredibly interesting and inspiring. STARLIGHT (featuring IGGY POP) - A FEATURE FILM BY SOPHIE BLONDY COMING MAY 8TH FROM CLEOPATRA ENTERTAINMENT

Cleopatra Entertainment LLC, the movie division of famed indie record label Cleopatra Records, has acquired all domestic rights to Starlight, a feature film by French film maker Sophie Blondy, coming to Blu-ray and VOD on May 9th. Set in the dunes near the North Sea, a small circus company is suffering from a serious lack of audience for their shows. Spectators are rare but the magic of the circus still thrives. Each performer rehearses and performs new numbers, but this fragile balance will quickly shatter to unveil their real nature and their most obscure feelings. The circus will then become a place of romantic lust where each will use their powers to satisfy their desires. Angele, the diaphanous ballerina, her clown lover Elliot and the circus ringmaster, full of cruelty and disturbed by fits of schizophrenia on one side. Zohra in love with Elliot, haunted by an uncanny conscience on the other side. Secrets, jealousy, envy will progressively take hold of them and trigger some irreversible acts. The life of the circus will then take a whole new turn. Iggy Pop appears throughout the film as an "angel" type character. Starlight was selected and screened at Tallinn - Black Nights Film Festival (Estonia, 2013), Montreal World Film Festival (Canada, 2013), Moscow - International Film Festival (Russia, 2013), Rendez-vous with New French Cinema in Rome (2013), and at Rotterdam International Film Festival (Netherlands, 2013).

Ben Clayton Wolfindale "Selfie" E.P. (benclayton.bandcamp.com)

Really excited about this new E.P. from Ben Clayton Wolfindale as he is quickly becoming one of my favorite experimental sound artists. "Tracif" opens the record with mind bending appeal. It sends traces of backwards tone manipulations in all directions before launching into a hypnotic beat. Soon the sounds of water, traffic and other audio stimulation move throughout this thought provoking piece. The lulling feel of "Memristic" washes over you with grey tones that evoke a cold and grim spirit that eventually give way to a menacing array of mechanical soundscapes while "Selfie" is even more dynamic and deranged. The E.P. closes with the bold, almost frightening stance of "Vessel". It has a stern, powerful presence to it that is enlightening and terrifying at the same time and I have to say I love it. Another must have release from Ben Clayton Wolfindale's rapidly growing discography. Bravo.

Brandon Martin S/T LP (brandonmartin.bandcamp.com)

Hailing from the rural town of Mc Alester, Oklahoma comes the debut album from lo-fi psych rock mastermind Brandon Martin. This self titled release is chocked full of short to the point songs that are brilliantly crafted and sure to get stuck in your head and have you singing along in no time. From the opening chords of "Long Pig" I new I was hooked as it's infectious riff and catchy feel is truly inspiring. The primitive mood of "Immolation Dream" has a very adventurous approach to it that is nothing short of stellar while songs like "Bicycle Days" and "Ether" mix psych driven traces with a hook laced jangling pop approach. Other favorites include the acoustic based beauty of "Floating" the galloping drive of "Prelude" and the deep, laid back, dirge like approach of "Heaven". An enticing album that takes you on an engaging musical journey that's inspiring, colorful and open minded.

Black Dunes S/T E.P. (blackdunesgr.bandcamp.com)

Led by a sea of guitars that seem to sweep in like an unpredictable shift in the weather, Black Dunes offer up 4 spectacular tracks on their debut self titled E.P. Opening piece "Lost" showcases intricate riffs that swing from cagey and clean to angular and noise driven, showing right out of the gate what this band is made. The slow crawl of "Subtlety" filters in colorful waves of uplifting sounds as the monstrous bass tone and pounding drums really put everything over the top, The soaring mood of "Inhabitant" pushes the envelope even further with it's crushing energy and melodic undertones while closing number "Steps" sends things off on a high note that harnesses layers of hypnotic bliss into a frantic blast of sonic fury. A top notch release that channels a wide range of eclectic moods.

Dares "Flying Colors" E.P. (dares.bandcamp.com)

New York City's Dares offer up this promising pair of exciting upbeat tracks which I believe are their first. "Flying Colors" is a catchy, bouncy number full of jangling guitars and a fun energetic vocal cadence. It's got some good shuffle and swag to it that echoes the spirits of The Kinks, Billy Bragg and Squeeze. The band then shift things up a bit as "Flock Of Arrows" has a more menacing attack that also harnesses an underlying spirit that's a bit haunting with some flourishing pulses of experimental sound filtered in for good measure. It's quite inspiring and I must say I've had this track on repeat quite a bit over the last few weeks. An excellent new band that are carving out a sound of their own through well crafted songs with a relentless attitude. Highly recommended

Swampland "Badlands" E.P. (swampland.bandcamp.com)

Los Angeles post punk outfit Swampland are back with this brand new 5 song E.P. adequately titled "Badlands". The songs carry Swampland's trademark "old west" stance as the tracks are all very cinematic in spirit and structure. "Lady Lazarus" bold vocal delivery and blistering guitar work are simply second to none while the dark, sinister mood of "A Thousand Times" channels the likes of Nick Cave, The Cure and Echo & The Bunnymen. I really love the bassline on "Caught In A Wash" as it's organic approach really adds to the dangerous mood that flows throughout the track while the stoic vibes of "Lonesome Life" close out the release in fine form. Another impressive effort from one of my favorite new bands.

Tall Tall Trees "Being There" Single (Joyful Noise Recordings)

Did you say a banjo being played through a bunch of effects pedals alongside a pumping drum machine beat??? Well count me in. Yes that's part of what you get on "Being There" the lead single from the new Tall Tall Trees album "Freedays" out now on Joyful Noise Recordings. The other side of the song is Tall Tall Trees brainchild Mike Savino's beautiful voice and amazing songwriting ability. I mean the amount of energy and power this guy creates here is truly inspiring as each note gives off a spirit of happiness that's ready top take on the world. Simply magical!!!

Christian Wheeler "Side 1" E.P. (christianwheeler.bandcamp.com)

Singer/songwriter Christian Wheeler shines bright on his debut E.P. simply titled "Side 1". From the opening moments of "Jackie (Oh)" you know you are in for something special as it's rich harmonies and clever hooks fuse the psychedelic pop of The Beatles with the swaggering flair of T Rex. The infectious vocal cadence and jangling guitar tones featured on "You!" will have you humming along for days on end while the laid back feel of "Screen Time" has me hoping for an early spring. The envelope is pushed once more as Wheeler introduces an early 60's crooner element to the mix during the passionate stance of "New". I really can't get enough of these songs. The musicianship and songwriting are stellar to say the least and the production and overall vibe of the recordings really put everything over the top. Looking forward to hearing what Wheeler has in store for "Side 2".

Circus Devils "Do The Nixon" (Advance Track) (rockathonrecords.com)

Self described as "art rock made by cavemen" and "high humor and low drama", Circus Devils, the long running project of Robert Pollard (Guide By Voices) and Tom and Tim Tobias are set to release "Laughs Last" their 17th and final album on February 24th. Advance track "Do The Nixon" features a clever stones like groove that's chocked full of Pollard's tongue in cheek lyrics which flow steadily throughout this two minute masterpiece. "I do the Jagger, and I clap my hands look both ways and cross the street". In addition to the final album the band will simultaneously release a best of album titled "Laughs Best (The Kids Eat It Up)" which is refereed to as "a collection of 30 speedy deliveries from rock and roll’s Twilight Zone – will leave you exhausted, satisfied, and ready for another spin.". Both vinyl releases are limited to a world wide pressing of just 500 copies and the "best of" contains a special bonus DVD.

Holy Water "Plaza" E.P. (un-holywater.bandcamp.com)

"Plaza" the latest offering from Leed's musician Will Shuttleworth's lo-fi/experimental project Holy Water is absolutely amazing. It opens with the epic blast know as "這裡Plaza" which harnesses some of the most intense and powerful sounds you will ever hear. It's almost like a soundtrack to a scene in a super hero film where the main character is first learning how to use his powers but instead of it being made by Marvel it's made by David Lynch. "Glory Days" is dripping with rich analog guitar textures and a bold, matter of fact style vocal delivery that I really enjoy. It's simple beat and array of subtle nuances blend well with it's captivating hooks that show off Shuttleworth's impressive song writing abilities while "Sing and Dance (while the music is being played)" is a brilliantly executed sound collage that explores high levels of experimental psychedelia. Overall "Plaza" is an elegant work of art from one the U.K.'s most inspiring up and coming composers. Highly recommended.

Night Talks "In Dreams" LP (nighttalkstheband.com)

Los Angels based alternative rock band Night Talks make quite an impact on their debut album "In Dreams". I'm immediately blown away by lead vocalist Soraya Sebghati's dynamic range as she showcases a brilliant balance of power, elegance and passion throughout the albums 11 songs. Things start off with the quick pace of "4 X 4" which is backed by the flawless rhythm section made up of bassist and drummer Josh and Cris Arteaga. The song's rich vocal melodies and shimmering guitars paint a colorful and inspiring sonic landscape. "Green" carries an atmospheric spirit as waves of pulsating synths flow alongside an intricate bassline giving it a striking cinematic glow while "Black And Blue" combines elements of post punk with lush indie pop that moves in sparkling fashion. Things slow down a bit during "Drift". It's epic mood and shuffling beat set the scene for the spectacular work of guitarist Jacob Butler as he shifts from highly textured tones and full bodied chords to blistering over driven leads. Other highlights include the hook driven sounds of "Mr Bloom", dark feel of "Glass" and cagey riff rock displayed on "Jungle". The phenomenal delivery of closing track "In Dreams" serves as a culmination of soothing sounds that leave you with a feeling of hope. An inspiring debut full of captivating songs by a band who are truly on the rise.

The Faded North S/T E.P. (thefadednorth.bandcamp.com)

Austria's The Faded North combine driving guitars with powerful melodic vocals throughout their self titled debut E.P. Opening number "Worm" captures a variety of ethereal sounds that sit nicely next to it's pounding almost frantic like ending while the hypnotic flow of "Ponytail" brings to mind the likes of Echo & The Bunnymen and The Cure. I think what's most impressive about this band is their ability to come up with innovative riffs that make you feel like your floating on air as tracks like "See You Soon" capture a desolate presence merged with lulling overtones that take you back to the days of college rock radio but with an updated modern day twist. A remarkable release for fans of eclectic, mind bending rock n roll.

Without Youth "Seasons" E.P. (withoutyouth.bandcamp.com)

Loving this new E.P. from Phoenix based indie pop outfit Without Youth. The duo's thought provoking, cinematic style moves throughout these four songs starting with the captivating presence of "Room" as it's dusky mood and swinging beat give it an infectious dose of undeniable appeal. "Take III" shares a similar pace but filters in a welcoming blast of fuzzed out guitar leads that fit perfectly alongside Liz Christy's soothing voice while the shuffling spirit that flows through "The Edge" give it all the makings of an indie pop classic. An honest, heart warming release from one of the most intriguing new duo's to come along in years.

Alcove S/T E.P. (alcovebandnj.bandcamp.com)

Bernards, New Jersey instrumental trio Alcove deliver a stellar E.P. full of intricate guitar work that's backed by a vibrant rhythm section who perform with top notch precision. Things get started with the powerful energy of ""Vancouver! Vancouver! This is it​!​" which is full of monster riffs and crushing percussion. It's a full on barn burner that never lets up. A slightly moodier feel looms at the beginning of "The Lodge" but the switch quickly flips into a wash of relentless math rock madness that makes me think of Voivod, Mahavishnu Orchestra and King Crimson but with a heavier overall feel. Closing number "Bled" is a bit more melodic and bright and features some highly welcomed distorted bass sounds that impress throughout the track. An incredible debut that shows off a high level of musicianship and execution from beginning to end.

Electric Sheep "Headscrew​" B/W "For Lilith" Single (electricsheepchicago.bandcamp.com)

Dynamite new single from this Chicago based Garage/Psych unit. "Headscrew" is full of relentless energy and brings to mind classic bands like The Kinks,The Electric Prunes and The Strawberry Alarm Clock. It's tremolo driven guitar sound and rock n roll swagger are down right infectious and it's the kind of song that will have you singing along half way through the first listen. "For Lilith" is catchy as hell and has a bit more bounce to it. It's excellent arrangement and uplifting tempo keep you wanting more. These tracks would sound amazing on a 45. Do yourself a favor and check this band out. Can't wait to hear what they bring next!!!.

J Mascis "Waltz #2" (Elliott Smith Cover) (www.alr-music.com)

Dinosaur JR's J Mascis offers up a blistering rendition of Elliot Smith's "Waltz #2" which appears on the upcoming compilation, "Say Yes! A Tribute to Elliott Smith". While Mascis trademark fuzz tone and laid back vocal delivery shine brightly he essentially has written a totally new set of lyrics inspired by Smith's original words and it sounds absolutely brilliant as he fully reinterprets the track in his own way while paying homage to the genius of Smith. The compilation is set for release on October 15th and also includes contributions from Juliana Hatfield, Jesu/Sun Kil Moon, Amanda Palmer, Lou Barlow and more.

Peach Hat S/T LP (peach-hat.bandcamp.com)

I Absolutely love this album from psychedelic,indie rock unit Peach Hat. Hailing from the ever so beautiful state of Maine, the band offer up 15 well crafted tracks that harness rich atmospheric textures and vibrant moods that bring to mind the likes of The Beatles,The Flaming Lips and Spacemen 3. The sitar based "In Your Head" and inspiring spirit of "I Don't Know" welcome you in to the bands world of vibrant sounds with open arms as the wavering direction of "Dreaming" makes for a nice wash of psych and shoegaze tones. "Retry" is full of lush organs and it's hypnotic vocal stance really puts the track over the top. Suddenly we reach a 6 part section known as "Into The Sea" which could be an E.P. all of it's own. It's like taking a temporary time warp to an alternate psychedelic underground world then returning to the previous place in time. These enticing numbers add even more flavor to the album esspecially parts IV and V which are full of spaced out grooves that feel like they could have come from a lost Issac Hayes record. The album winds down with the piano based folk flair of "Welcome To The USA" which is fitting ending to one of the coolest albums you'll hear all year. Get into it.

Right-Teen "Fantastic 6am" LP (rightteen.bandcamp.com)

This is the type of record that radiates just how much fun and energy and passion went into the songs and recordings and what it's like when a musician throws out the rule book and just goes for it. This 10 song album was recorded in St. Louis between February of 2015 and March of 2016 mostly on 4 track cassette. Lead off number "Julia The Elder" has a feel good vibe that's backed by catchy melodies and a pulsating beat keeping the energy level on high, before giving way to the melancholy, almost psychedelic sounds of "Contest". The bright spirited "Donna Richardson" with it's reverb drenched production and lo-fi charm sits well next to other heartfelt numbers like "Stranger Past" and "Hartford Maine". As things come to a close the jangling surf guitar sounds on "Wild Child" add a nice touch to the mix as it's breezy mood leaves me wanting more. A remarkable record that's genuine, uplifting and pure.

Volkan S/T LP (volkan.bandcamp.com)

Setting the tone with a lush, mystical wave of synths Santiago, Chile's Volkan begin the intense musical journey that makes up their latest LP in beautiful fashion. As "B_El Comienzo" fades out the eerie guitars of "Amasincronía" paint a sonic landscape that moves with a cinematic elegance that's second to none while the multilayered "Halo del Ocaso" is simply breathtaking. The band delve into a touch of post punk territory on "SobreHundido" as there is a darker, dirge driven tone to it that sets things up well for the apocalyptic feel of "Oí el Silencio". This is the kind of album that should be listened to from beginning to end, without distraction so that one can take in all of it's cosmic energy in it's fullest form. A fine album indeed.

"Doesn't Matter Anyway" an interview with Don Salamon of The Pleasure Holes

The Pleasure Holes is the latest project of Florida musician Don Salamon. His new album "Doesn't Matter Anyway" is a collection of ten lo-fi, noise driven, shoegaze inspired tracks full of glistening melodies and hypnotic undertones. We talked with Don about the music that first made an impact on him, how The Pleasure Holes came about, the making of the new album and his plans for the future. CMM-What's the first music you remember hearing as a child and what artist made the biggest impact on you?

Don - The first music I remember listening to as a kid was some weird stuff my mom was into. Yanni, Deep Forest, one in particular I will still listen to October Project. I think the artist that made the biggest impact on me in general was David Bowie. I think for a solid 6 months I listened to nothing but Station to Station. After that it was just mining for all the gems he wrote.

CMM-When did you start playing music? What were the first bands you played in like?

Don - I started playing music around 15 years ago, it was mostly shit in the beginning, probably still is, but definitely rock. I was in a metal band when I was in the Navy named Muddy Helmet. Kind of a Pantera meets Mastodon deal. I just played rhythm guitar in that one. Other than that I have always done things myself which is good and bad.

CMM-What led you to start making music as The Pleasure Holes?

Don - The Pleasure Holes came about as a joke name I was telling my friend Nick about. I would always send him stuff I wrote through email, but that is kind of cumbersome so I set up a band camp account with that name. A guy named Henry, who is awesome, bought a track and that blew me away that people would actually pay money for things I made. I was encouraged rightly or wrongly by Renato from The Blog That Celebrates Itself and Simon from the Loose Cannon radio show to keep plugging away.

CMM-You just put up a digital version of your debut album "Doesn't Matter Anyway'. What was the writing and recording process like? Was there a particular mindset you were in when making the record?

Don - I tried to record as quickly as possibility. I am married with a kid so I never have much time. Plus my wife hates the music I make and I am into so that motivates me to get done quickly. Writing it was new to me because I have never sat down and stuck to a single genre or sound for multiple songs. I probably ended up with 20 tracks, and cut it down to 10 that I focused on making sound as good as I could. I am by no means a studio wizard so there are a lot of warts on it.

CMM-Any particular gear that you used when making the album?

Don - Gear wise I have a RME Fireface I used for the recording, on the from end is an ART MPA II preamp. Everything was recorded direct in for guitar and bass. The vocals I ran though either a SM58A or some sort of Gauge condenser microphone (not sure the model).For my sound the most important things are the ART MPA. That I use for all of the distortion by just overdriving it. Secondly, the guitar I use is a Dean Flame-o-matic with the Floyd Rose tremolo. This is cool because I can rest my hand on the bridge to bend the strings which I keep slightly out of tune. This makes the guitars chorus(y) all the time. The drums were all either done with EZDrummer 2 or played on a MIDI pad.

CMM-If you could score a film for any film director who would it be?

Don - Hmmm… I would score Police Story. It is an old Jackie Chan flick.

CMM-Any plans to play live with this project?

Don - No, I am a loser! I wish I could play live, but that isn’t in the cards for me.

CMM- HA HA. What else do you have planned for The Pleasure Holes?

Don - I’ll start focusing on my black metal project called UKO. for the rest of the summer, and then after that I’ll probably work on the other 10 tracks and write some new ones for a early Spring release.

Ballad Of Geraldine "What's The Deal" single/video (balladofgeraldine.bandcamp.com)

I've written about the greatness of this band recently as their self titled E.P. (which this track is from) was one of my favorites of 2015. However the band just released this awesome video clip for "What's The Deal" so I thought why not share it and spread the word again on this rugged indie rock unit based in Halle, Germany. Their dusky vocals, garage rock guitars and galloping drums are nothing short of stellar and it's certainly the kind of track made for kicking off a red hot summer. Looking forward to hearing new music from this crew soon.

Bearstronaut "Black Bells" Single (Bearstronaut.com)

A luscious track that takes us back to classic 80's electro pop bands like Erasure, Alphaville and Duran Duran. Throw this into an 80's Night DJ set and the crowd will assure you they used to "tape this song off the radio". It's catchy, hard hitting beat and liquid like synths flow passionately over a sparse layer of chorus fueled guitar textures. Hands down the closest thing I've heard to a dance floor anthem in years. A remarkable effort indeed.

Beck "Wow" Single (beck.com)

Some may call this a return to "Old School" Beck but honestly Beck is always just being Beck regardless of what particular "style" he might be evoking at the time. Still after watching "Southlander: Diary of a Desperate Musician" this week I am fondly reminded of Beck's "Bong Load" years when he was making music in a small isolated shack that served as his mad scientist lab. The banging beat that runs franticly through "Wow" is sure to make you want to jump around immediately . Not sure if he's using the infamous white keyboard here but it's certainly full of lively instrumentation that's colorful and bright and of course Beck's laid back lyrical flow is in full effect alongside a rousing chorus full of dreamy backing vocals. A fine addition to the Beck catalog that is sure to put a smile on your face.

Melvins "Bases Loaded" LP (melvinsofficial.bandcamp.com)

So it's finally summer and baseball season is in full swing. I find myself on the edge of my seat almost daily as I watch my Kansas City Royals defend their crown. So how happy was I to discover earlier this week that mlb.com was going out on a limb and hosting this latest Melvins effort for all the world to hear. The album features six different bass players including contributions from Steve McDonald from the legendary Los Angeles glam punk band Redd Kross and their old friend Krist Novoselic from Nirvana plus return appearances by former bassists Jeff Pinkus (Butthole Surfers), Trevor Dunn (Mr. Bungle/Fantomas), Jared Warren (Big Business) and Dale Crover. According to King Buzzo, “More is more! As hard as it might be to believe, all of these bass players contribute something of their own to Basses Loaded which gives the whole album a good kick right in it’s big fat ass.” Yes many of these songs have been released before on the highly limited "Beer Hippy" and "War Pussy" E.P.'s but pairing them up with the three new tracks and making them readily available to the masses was a great thing to do. Plus who can resist a cover of "Take Me Out To The Ballgame". A thunderous blast of rock n roll sure to melt your speakers and crush your skull.

"Inside Out n' Upside Down", the latest installment of The Orange Kyte singles series is a brilliant upbeat psych tinged number that's full of 60's swagger and sway. It's bright and fun and full of life and sits well alongside the bands previous singles. I must say the pounding drumming and garage rock organ tones add a delicious layer of icing to the cake. Another stroke of excellence from this Vancouver based rock n roll project.

VoirVoir "I Wanna" single (fleetingyouthrecords.bandcamp.com)

Damn this is good. This Bethlehem Pennsylvania unit create a whirlwind of sound that is second to none. "I Wanna" is the first single from the bands album "There Are No Good Goodbyes" which is set for a cassette release in mid July on Fleeting Youth Records. Simply put this band pulls out all the stops when it comes to their brand of indie rock madness. Sure you can reference bands like The Pixies, Flaming Lips and Mercury Rev but VoirVoir definitely have their own personality and style. Highly recommended .

Holy Wall "Night Stops" E.P. (holywall.bandcamp.com)

Asheville North Carolina musician Matthew Reed, really raises the bar with this brand new E.P. from his atmospheric dream pop project Holy Wall. The record is made up of four astonishingly beautiful songs that sound like they were sent down to earth from another world. From the cinematic flavor of "No Nature" to the experimentally layered textures of the title track Reed has constructed an absolute masterpiece. Things lean towards a more folk based sound on "Living Is Easy" but the eerie vibes stay intact throughout as there's a hypnotic element to it all that keeps you locked in. The E.P. is capped off with the near ten minute epic known as "Dreams Of Annihilation" which combines instrumentation with colorful glimpses into sound collage style territories all the while emitting a beautiful and positive radiant glow. A remarkable release from an incredible new artist on the rise."Night Stops" will be available April 16th

This recently unveiled piece from the upcoming self titled Kromo CD E.P. is a experimental mind bender to the fullest extend. Headed by the experimental guitar attack of Pittsburgh musician Kevin Monahan, "Be Water" is a lush flowing soundscape highlighted by many twists and turns on what feels like a journey through uncharted areas of space. There's also an underlying jazz feel in Monahan's playing that sits well with the futuristic essence of the track. Beautiful, haunting and breathtakingly brilliant.

Kyle Craft "Eye Of A Hurricane" Single (subpop.com)

This high energy new single from Portland by way of Shreveport, Louisiana musician Kyle Craft is down right incredible. Led by Craft's flamboyant vocal presence the track echoes the likes of early Elton John and Ziggy Stardust era Bowie. It's got a great balance between 70's glam rock swag and ragtime era sway as Daniel Talmadg lays down some mean piano playing throughout the track while the arrangement is absolutely stellar. There's also an undeniable appeal and soulfulness to it all that I can't help but love. Off of Craft's latest album "Dolls Of Highland".

School Of Seven Bells "Ablaze" Single (schoolofsevenbells.com)

"Ablaze", the new single from School Of Seven Bell's latest album "SVIIB" is a powerful blast of electro laced dream pop. The song narrates the story of Alejandra Deheza and Benjamin Curtis relationship, before his tragic death from lymphoma in 2013. It's thunderous beat and pulsating synths lead by Deheza's passionate voice make it one of the bands best tracks to date as it's ethereal mood and underlying ambience are both beautiful and intense.

Another top notch single from this Vancouver based psychedelic unit. "Which Vivian?" is a hard hitting number full of big guitars and dream like vocals that harnesses a powerful guitar attack that's matched with an inspiring hypnotic groove. The driving beat and pumping bass line really put everything over the top and bring to mind a feeling of "I Can See For Miles" era Who. An infectious blast of garage psych rock n roll that delivers from beginning to end.

Today Junior "Blunt Breath" Single (wearetodayjunior.com)

This Boston indie surf rock trio formed in 2012 and has been held together by brothers, Harry & Mike O'Toole ever since. Their latest single "Blunt Breath" is a crushing blast of alt-rock n roll mayhem that brings to mind Guided By Voices, Jawbreaker and Yo La Tengo without really sounding like any of those bands at all. Their walls of fuzzed out guitars backed by a no frills pounding drum beat quickly make them one of my favorite new bands.

Miami post punk unit Astari Nite impress with their latest single "Always Like Yesterday". It's upbeat presence, stellar vocal approach and sparkling guitar sounds are backed by a promising rhythm section that make it one of the stand out singles of the year. It's the type of song that balances a combination of moody grey colors with beautifully crafted pop hooks and brings to mind a mix of Echo & The Bunnymen, The Cure and The Stone Roses. Beach For Tiger "Afternoons in Space" (www.soundcloud.com/beach-for-tiger)

"Afternoons in Space", the second single from London's Beach For Tiger is a laid back number that blends 60's psychedelic sounds with soul and jazz influences and a touch of 80's pop perfection. The hypnotic vocals are what attracted me to this track first as the phrasing and atmospheric delivery opens up a beautiful world of psychedelic bliss. It's rolling bass line and in the pocket percussion sweeten the mood even more and compliment the crystal clear guitar sounds that chime throughout. A cleverly well written track backed by exquisite musicianship and a flourishing layer of ambient textures.

Sikflowr "Common Era" E.P. (sikflowr.bandcamp.com)

What an amazing debut from this Toronto based experimental unit. Sikflowr immediately draw you in with their seductive, infectious like presence as opening track "Sugar Town (Go Get It)" captures you in it's web of psychedelic mystery. "The Bugs Are Coming" follows a loosely structured path that's full of distorted guitars that vary from dirge like chords to high pitched runs that sound like they are being performed on guitars made of glass. The more jazz based "Bodies In The Garage" features a sea of deep atmospherics while tracks like "Sikflowr" and "Not My Dog" are more melodic. Overall "Common Era" is a beautiful collection of rich sounding pieces that instill a feeling of travel, openness and warmth.

Sudogwon "IIII" E.P. (sudogwon.bandcamp.com)

I was thrilled when I got the news about this new Sudogwon E.P. and it easily lives up to my expectations. Opening with the amazingly titled "TDAH (No Soy Jason Pierce, Pero Bueno​.​.​.​)" things kick off in fine fashion as this stripped down guitar driven piece is backed by a collection of spacey drones and a cool lo-fi feel that adds a touch of G.B.V. like charm. "(Midori Kobayashi Te Amo) Desde Que Tenía Seis" is a rather bluesy feeling psych/folk piece while the blistering guitar attack of "Robo #2" sets things over the top and adds a bit of angst to the mix. Things wind down with the psych pop fueled sounds of "¿Cómo Hago?" which rounds out this E.P. well and filters in some really outstanding experimental sounds to what could be this Venezuelan based bands best song yet.

The I Don't Cares "Love Out Loud" Single (www.paulwesterberg.com)

So as most of you probably know by now Paul Westerberg and Juliana Hatfield have teamed up to form The I Don't Cares. "Love Out Loud" from the duo's debut album "Wild Stab" is a raunchy, high energy rocker led by a buzzsaw like guitar attack and Westerbergs trademark rasp. At a romping two minutes and seventeen seconds the track takes things back to "Sorry Ma" era Replacments when the band was at it's rawest and most stripped down point. So excited to hear these two making raw no frills rock n roll. Check out this brilliantly put together animated video below.

I'm blown away by the colorful sounds of this new single from The Orange Kyte out of Vancouver. It's psychedelic style and rich guitars are highlighted by a classic 60's vocal stance that paints a warm cinematic world of intrigue and wonder. Led by musician Stevie Moonboots and backed by a top notch support squad of drummer Dave Mulvaney and keyboardist Derick O’ Neill "Dope: 86" is nothing short of magical. I can't wait to hear what's next.

"Five For Friday" with Erick Pineda of Citrus Clouds

Citrus Clouds are an incredible new shoegaze/dream pop band based in Phoenix Arizona. Their debut E.P. "In Time I Am" merges beautiful dual vocals with a heavy dose of ethereal dive bombing guitars and a spot on rhythm section. Guitarist/vocalist Erick Pineda shares some of his favorite songs in this weeks edition of "Five For Friday" but first enjoy the hypnotic sounds of "In Time I Am".

Marcos Valle- Voo Cego

This song has a really timeless, effortless. dreamy sound. The way the melodies intertwine and layer is really nice. A near perfect song.

Blouse- Imperium

This record was a huge reason Citrus Clouds started. After hearing Imperium, we were inspired to create a band heavy on melodies and a super tight rhythm section. This song in particular has a cool sound.The punchy bass drives everything, the vocals are dreamy and ethereal.

Slowdive- Alison

Another massive influence on our sound. The interplay between the female and male vocals is beautiful. We love how dense and layered and moody Alison is. All the reverb and delay creates a nice tapestry of sound that paints pictures inside the mind.

No Joy- Hare Tarot Lies

One of our favorite songs.10 seconds in are you can't help but be hooked. Once the verse kicks in, the muff on the bass part just punches you and we love how the vocal melody snakes around the drone guitars. A soundtrack to many parties.

My Bloody Valentine- What You Want

An amazing song that seems to be swimming in an ocean of guitar swells, distortion and reverb. It's a cool juxtaposition to have this really aggressive, raw guitar and very soft vocals. The guitar work on this song is particularly amazing.

Boxset "Channel Surf" E.P. (boxsetstereo.bandcamp.com)

I get an uplifting sense of positive energy when I listen to this E.P. from the Philly based band known as Boxset. Headed by Vocalist/guitarist Rob Dunphey and accompanied live by guitarist Ryan Quinn, bassist Evan Simons and drummer Joe Russo these guys make an inspiring impression as their charming brand of lo-fo dream pop just feels right to me. Opening number "Tv Dreams" is like a warm ray of sunshine after a week long stretch of grey filled rainy days. Stand out track "Paint" is my favorite of the bunch. it projects a mood that to me falls somewhere between early Guided By Voices, "Magical Mystery Tour" ear Beatles and Mercury Rev. "After Breakfast" is also a soothing piece of psych tinged bliss that features a variety of highly textured guitar tones that swell with mystery and intrigue. A fun upbeat release that's honest, well crafted and warm.

Krista Van Liew "Air In Fire" E/P. (kristavanliew.bandcamp.com)

Austin by way of Virginia musician krista Van Liew delivers on her latest E.P. "Air In Fire". The delicate wavering feel of "Falling Forward" sets the pace as Krista's beautiful vocal delivery blends well with the shimmering guitar songs and in the pocket rhythm section. "Heartland" is a slower, darker track that features some truly haunting guitar work reflective of The Cure and Cocteau Twins while "Desert Wind" could be from the soundtrack of a lost episode of Twin Peaks. Overall "Air In Fire" is an intense release that takes you down a dark and magical path that leaves me wanting more.

Lev Snowe "Drifting Off" E.P. (levsnowe1.bandcamp.com)

A brilliant effort from Winnipeg's Lev Snowe. There's a cagey aspect that goes well with the 80's like pop sounds that make up "Drifting Off". Opening cut "Now And Then" brings to mind artist like The Psychedelic Furs and The Lightning Seeds while the crystal clear guitar tones of "Daydream 1" paint a beautiful landscape for the tracks soothing vocals that carry the song. "Seeing Things" might be my favorite track of the E.P. as it's friendly energy and eclectic vibes are top notch. "Melting Away' and "Daydream 2" focus even more on the experimental side of the things which I welcome in with open arms. A remarkable release that sounds like it was made to make you swoon.

Movie Brain "Breeder" E.P. (moviebrain.bandcamp.com)

An excellent three song debut from this Tennessee based project who's beautifully well crafted songs channel elements of shoegaze and jangle pop in fine form. The upbeat presence of the title track gets everything going with it's infectious beat and chiming guitar sounds. "Lift" is a bit more moody and features a wash of atmospheric guitars and a pulsating bass line that really drives the track while "Laurels" emits layers of psychedelic vibrancy throughout that are simply delightful. Looking forward to good things from this project in 2016.

Obvious Creature "We Don't Have To Be Afraid Anymore" LP (obviouscreature.bandcamp.com)

This incredible debut from Australia's Obvious Creature opens with the beautiful instrumental "Everything That Happened". It's lush wave of ambient sounds quickly build into a vibrant mix of delightful shimmering tones. The heartfelt and intense feel of "Christmas Eve 08" has a raw openness that is sure to win you over fast. The swirling sounds of "Leave This City Behind You" and "Alleys" feature a lot of brilliant experimentation especially with the unique percussion sounds that are brought to the table while the pulsating flow of "You Were Wrong" ties in elements of coldness that may sound bleak but are positive and inspiring at the same time. Hands down a wonderful album from beginning to end.

Yaman Palak "Cosmic Garden" E.P. (yamanpalak.bandcamp.com)

Hypnotic guitars and cinematic atmospheres flourish throughout this new E.P. from Queens Yaman Palak. From the hypnotic feel of "Former Doubts" to the mysteriousness of "Only More The Same" you will be swept away by the ethereal mood Palak is able to create. "Takeoff While You Can" combines aspects of psychedelia and dream pop with an underlying 70;'s singer songwriter type vibe that I love while the track "Yeni Records" is darker and more intense. The powerful yet laid back sounds of "CHE" round out this release making you wonder what's next as the track comes to a mind bending halt leaving you mesmerized by it's seductive sound.

Allie's Dope "Embryo" E.P. (alliesdope.bandcamp.com)

Allie's Dope strike big on their latest E.P. "Embryo". From the firsts notes of "In You" you know you are in for a serious treat. It's barn burning surf rock riff eventually fades into a sea of guitars run through heavy modulation that are beautiful and warm. The rich sounds of "Ebony" really set a cinematic mood that blends elements of heavy psych and garage rock together in an amazing way. Things start to move faster on "Displaced". It reminds me a bit of early Cure mixed with early T.S.O.L. while "Ocean" is more ambient and has a modern indie rock type presence. Things wind down with the passionate and hypnotic sounds of "Egyptian". Overall a fabulous release that mixes incredible guitar playing and solid songwriting with elements of intrigue and mystery.

Lazy Queen "Drift" E.P. (lazyqueen.bandcamp.com)

Brooklyn's Lazy Queen rip through four high energy tracks on their debut E.P. "Drift". Opener "Wouldn't You Rather Know Yourself" is full of big riffs and reverb drenched guitars that create a sonic landscape of intensity before fading out with the bleak and cold sounds of a wandering piano. "Torus" is a quick paced melodic number that features some brilliant playing from lead guitarist Reyson Morales that gels well with vocalist/guitarist Henrik Soeberg. Things get a bit darker during "Child Of Glass" as the band venture into more melodic territory that channels classic bands like Ride, The House Of Love and MBV while the catchy feel of "Lesion" is backed by the driving attack of bassist Julian S. as things break into a collection of colorful guitar noise mayhem that quickly reforms into a crushing sonic onslaught led by drummer Joel Gunderson. An impressive debut that harnesses raw rock n roll energy and blends it with ambient shoegaze bliss.

Motiongazer "A Single Room of Heaven" LP (motiongazer.bandcamp.com)

"A Single Room In Heaven" the latest release from Julian Powell's ambient/noise project Motiongazer is absolutely beautiful. Opening track "Space" is a droning piece that builds and builds and would fit well next to much of the soundtrack of "2001". "all gathered 'round the sparrow's corpse" makes me think of a giant rocket ship taking off from a hidden planet that lies on the outer realm of the galaxy while "The Composers Child" has a more mysterious tone. "Amn (endowed widow​/​withering window)" is much more abstract with various sounds and activities venturing through the mix throughout. It's an incredibly though provoking and visual piece. Next thing you know you are being swept back into the clouds on "I Promised You I Would Be Waiting By the Gate and I Am Here Now Waiting For You" which is simply breathtaking. The mind bending "smile (Version I)" is the brightest track on the album as it's wash of colorful sound and dream like feel make for the perfect blend while the darkness of "Purging Water From the Soulmine" moves into haunting like territory. A most excellent release that shows a wide range of diverse soundscapes not to be missed.

Shubugan "Live On Vitamix" (shubugan.bandcamp.com)

Shubugan the project headed by NYC Lo-Fi/experimental artist Judson Kolk offers up a delightful E.P. titled "Live On Vitamix". I admire Judson's ability to create such detailed and textured compositions with a wide variety of instruments and structures. The rugged yet hypnotic sounds of "Crick In My Neck" drift into psychedelic territory that's backed by an infectious rhythm. Standout piece "Peter Stuyvesant Of Old New York" begins with a distorted spoken word story with some faint slide blues guitar sounds in the background that lead to a raw, jazzy performance reflective of "Thrust" era Herbie Hancock and Sun Ra. It's one of the most incredible pieces of music I have heard in some time. "Underwater Microscopic City Pt. 1" is a vibrant classical guitar based track while "Underwater Microscopic City Pt. 2: is much more of a sound collage based creation. "Live At Vitamix" is a truly remarkable accomplishment that delves into multiple aspects of sound and mood and continues to impress me with every listen. Highly Recommended.

The Bijous "bijoux" E.P. (thebijous.bandcamp.com)

Fabulous E.P. from this Akron OH based unit that's full of vibrant spirit and charm. "Soap" is an eclectic number that channels the spirits of 70's art rock, and 80's college rock in fine form. "Sadie Malady" is a moody piece backed by a swinging beat and matter of fact style vocal approach while the cagey riff that carries "High Priestess" brings to mind early Sonic Youth. Closing track "Touchy Feely" is the most chaotic of the bunch as it's fueled by a chainsaw like guitar tone and driving riff that is second to none. Clearly one of my favorite new releases of this very early 2016.

Tonewood Sky "Zenith" LP (tonewoodsky.bandcamp.com)

Loving this new album from Australian instrumental project Tonewood Sky. It's a bit more upbeat and spacey than their previous release "Many Places Called Home" which is also a favorite of mine. "Shadows On The Moon" starts things out with a melodic post rock type of riff that moves into more ambinet territory as things develop. The catchy feel of "Living Through Dreams" brings a pop sensibility alongside a dirge like rhythm section creating a unique bit of tension throughout. Stand out tracks "Through The Darkness" and "Trapped Inside" really impress as the arrangements and rhythms get more and more complex and also show off a jangling guitar style reminicent of bands like Roxy Music and Modest Mouse. "Comfortable Reality" and "Manic Mind" feature some beautiful textures that play off each other well while the slow colorful sounds of "It' Nice To Be Free" show off another side of what Tonewood Sky is about. An excellent record from start to finish that keeps me coming back for more.
