"Five For Friday" with Natalie Bibby of WANWEIRD

WANWEIRD is the solo project of London musician Natalie Bibby. In less than a year she has released a spectacular E.P. titled "Honey & Salt" and a handful of impressive singles. Her sound is full of raw, angst ridden riffs that combine equal amounts of early 80's post punk with early 90's alternative rock. Bibby shares some of her favorite songs in this weeks edition of "Five For Friday" but first enjoy her latest single "Evelyn McHale".

Dig - I'll Stay High

I think Dig are probably one of the most, if not the most, underrated guitar bands of 90's. This is off their self-titled 1993 album, which is one of my top ten albums of all time. The songwriting on that particular album is really something, and it amazes me that they weren't bigger than they were. With this track they manage to make a hypnotic wall of sound with their three guitarists, and the use of the Wah pedal is genius.

My Bloody Valentine - You Made Me Realise

Back to 1987 with this one. I love this track because it's between the classic shoegazing sound of the band's 'Loveless' album, and the energetic lo-fi 80's punk rock sound. Bilinda Butcher's dreamy vocals contrast nicely with the aggressive biting guitars, creating a bewitching tension.

TAD - Leafy Incline

This one's from 1993; it would be impossible for me not to include a track from a seminal 90's grunge band, as that whole scene has inspired so much of my own music. I think love the guitar tone, the slow plodding verses, and then suddenly the energetic pre-chorus; emphasised by those awesome cymbal chokes. Super cool songwriting.

Slo Burn - July

This is one of my favourite tracks of all time, released in 1996 off their EP 'Amusing the Amazing'. The band features Jerry Garcia from Kyuss, which I think had broken up shortly before the formation of Slo Burn. I love the lo-fi trashyness of the track, especially those drums and gritty monolithic guitars. The build up at the start is awesome, especially when it all lets loose and goes nuts at around 0:40ish.

Allusondrugs - I Should Have Gone to Uni

Lastly, something modern. I actually had the privilege of playing with these guys a couple of years ago, and their live show is one of the best I've ever seen. It's rare that I hear a rock song post-2000's where I have a eureka moment, and think "oh my god, yeah, I totally feel that", and it's kinda magical. For me it seems like the overwhelming majority of mainstream post-2000's rock is lacking relatibility, maybe because too many bands are deliberately focusing on writing good songs just for the sake of it and getting famous...rather than writing about something they really feel. However, we could do with a band like this breaking out into the mainstream to shake things up a bit. Especially love the fuzzy guitars in this!

Six Records CMM Wants You To Know

Aura Blaze "Sweet Talkin' Woman" (ELO Cover) (aurablaze.bandcamp.com)

I've been hooked on Aura Blaze since I heard their debut single "A Glass Of Tears Half Empty" back in 2014 and was blown away by their self titled debut album which gives serious references to The Beatles, The Beach Boys and ELO so it's fitting they would offer up this stellar rendition of the ELO classic "Sweet Talkin Woman". It stays pretty close to the style of the original while adding a few personal twists and turns to the mix. I gotta say I love it and am also happy to hear there is new Aura Blaze material is in the works. Can't wait for their next album.

Bagaski "Yoail" LP (bagaski.bandcamp.com)

Bagaski are an experimental noise outfit from Greece. Their latest offering "Yoail" covers a huge range of sonic territory beginning with the spaced out sci-fi sounds of "Louise" which makes me think of powerful rays of light flowing from a newly discovered sun millions of light years away from Earth. The manic piano playing in "Elia S. Corba" meshes well with the apocalyptic rumblings that move underneath it while the sea of voices that flow throughout "Fager" are simply breathtaking. I find myself continually combing back to the collage like number "phylxx II". It's lulling presence evokes a sense of peace that is inviting and warm as it's psychedelic undertones and colorful textures create a sound that is other worldly to say the least. A stunningly beautiful and inspiring release indeed.

City Of Dawn "Every Sound Reminds Me Of Your Smile" LP (cityofdawn.bandcamp.com)

City Of Dawn is a project founded by Texas musician Damien Duque. First let me say this album is absolutely incredible. Opening piece "Find Me" intertwines layers of subliminal sounds that move with elegance and grace and establish a rich cinematic mindset. The glistening presence of "I Feel You Cuddle Quietly in my Dreams" brings to mind the likes of Eno and Tangerine Dream as the tones offer a wide array of colorful textures that seem to change with each passing second while "Lantern Fest" is one of the corner stones of the album as the track was inspired by Duque's recent experience at a Lantern Fest in Texas. The Lantern Fest is where thousands of revelers join together as a community and create an unforgettable spectacle of light. After an afternoon of live music, dancing, and s’mores, when the sun sets and the time is just right, attendees light the sky with lanterns representing their highest hopes, deepest regrets, and fondest dreams. Reflecting on the evening's festivities Duque says "The event is a memorable night to just sit back and look at tiny amber particles that unfold our memories & stories. Just seeing them brings inner peace and tranquility into the soul which in my perspective I can hear them float happily while showing off their amber light to the universe." Other highlights from the album include the uplifting sounds of "Every Sound Reminds Me Of Your Smile", the introspective touch of "The Sky In Our Eyes" and the mysterious nature of "The Light That Grows Beneath My Wings". This is one of the most well executed and most beautiful releases you will ever hear. TEN STARS!!!

Mythical Zenith "Hiraeth" E.P. (mitchellmacfarlane.bandcamp.com)

"Hiraeth" is the latest E.P. from multi-instrumentalist Mitchell MacFarlane who lives in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. The pieces vary from frantic video game like numbers to more intricate math rock bits and passionate, theatrical soundtracks. "Ganymede" kicks things off with it's upbeat, highly melodic guitar riffs that are accompanied by washes of pulsating synths and an infectious rhythm. "Blue" makes good use of a galloping beat and highly detailed instrumentation that gives a slight hint at metal but leans more to the atmospheric side of things. "Eric" reminds me of legendary composer Mike Oldfield while "The Willow Tree" is even more dramatic and intense. Overall "Hiraeth" is a top notch collection of work from a most impressive young composer. Looking forward to hearing what's next.

Possum "Quick Damage" E.P. (possumyyz.bandcamp.com)

I can't get enough of this debut E.P. from Toronto based rock n roll unit Possum. These guys go full throttle right out of the gate as the blistering sounds of "Quick Damage" are backed by relentless garage rock riffs and psychedelic undertones. Things shift quickly into the dirge driven experimental piece known as "Sunslug". It merges an undeniable sense of menace with pulsating layers of ambient drones and shoegaze like swells. Before you know it the band are back into riff mode as the swirling surf tones of "The Invisible Man" are in full effect and show off the incredible musicianship this band is made of. The intricate guitar attack and pin point rhythm section are second to none as the matter of fact lead vocal delivery compliments everything in grand fashion. Things wind down with the slow passionate feel of "Sleepwalker" which shows off their sense of diversity and sends you off wanting more. A top notch debut from one of my favorite new bands.

Two Souls "A Ghost, A Shadow" Single (2sls.bandcamp.com)

Two Souls is the brainchild of St Louis based musician Demi J. Haynes. Her delicate vocals and comforting guitar playing create a surreal, ambient world on her brand new single "A Ghost, A Shadow". It's the type of song that makes you feel like it was recorded in an empty old house as it's ethereal mood is as eerie as it is beautiful. There's also a looming chorus of sound that filters in and out in just the right places and moves with a supernatural like presence. A truly captivating piece from an immensely talented up and coming songwriter.

Six Records CMM Wants You To Know

Fullback "The Go North" E.P. (fullback.bandcamp.com)

Loving this debut E.P. from Brooklyn based band Fullback. "The 25" kicks everything of quickly with it's captivating vocals, bouncy beat and glistening guitars that give it somewhat of a brit-pop feel. "12 - 2 (by the hearth)" has a bright, uplifting vibe that meshes well with it's optimistic lyrics while "Go North" is more soothing and intricate. Things wind down with "Go North 2" and it's lush, calming presence that moves like a setting sun on a warm Spring day. Highly recommended.

Lunar Kin "Escaping Velocity" E.P. (lunarkin.bandcamp.com)

Lunar Kin are a really impressive new indie pop band out of Myrtle Beach South Carolina. Their debut 4 song E.P. is full of intricate, clean guitars and stellar musicianship that bring to mind the likes of The Connells and The Ocean Blue. The jangling feel of "W Broadway St." opens things up with a breezy looseness and catchy hook while the hazy flavored "Speeding Down Memory Lane" has an uplifting energy and undeniable appeal. Closing number "Last Night On Planet Earth" offers an epic dynamic to everything and sends things off in grand fashion. A captivating debut that sets a solid foundation for what's to come.

Modern English "You're Corrupt" Single (www.modernenglish.me)

Modern English are back with a new album titled "Take Me to the Trees". Lead single "You're Corrupt" is an eerie anthem full of dark undertones that loom over top of a matter of fact style vocal delivery that works together very well. It's shuffling beat and cold presence is down right haunting and I must say I love it. The band hit the road in March of 2017 for a full U.S. tour.

News From Neptune "The Cold Open" E.P. (newsfromneptunemusic.bandcamp.com)

News From Neptune is the brainchild of British musician David Miller and he delivers big on his debut E.P. "The Cold Open". All four songs offer up a variety of tones that are futuristic and inspiring. From the opening notes of the title track you know you are in for something special as the colorful wash of atmospheric sounds flow through your ears with never ending beauty. "Viewfinder" is more melodic and catchy as it's psychedelic flair and infectious riffs make it second to none while the pulsating spirit of "The Man In The Microllight" offers a blend of highly textured tones that are incredible refreshing. Closing piece "Head On Backwards" is a stunning composition that comes off like the theme to a futuristic t.v. sitcom. I really can't say enough good things about this release. Miller has really carved out his own musical style here that perfectly merges elements of more traditional compositions with experimental madness. A truly delightful and inspiring work of art.

Strange Lights "...In The Dawn Sky" 10" E.P. (strangelightsband.bandcamp.com)

Such a breathtakingly beautiful release from Strange Lights out of London. Part one is very colorful and lulling and evokes a sense of elegance and grace throughout. I love the multiple layers of sound that continue to evolve as the track feels like a living breathing entity all it's own. Part two is also atmospheric but incorporates more distinct synth sounds into the mix that move over top of a deep soothing hypnotic bass line and lush effect driven guitars. Copies of the 10" vinyl version of this are already sold out but you can purchase the digital version for just £3 via the bands bandcamp page. A brilliant release sure to satisfy your need for ambient psychedelic beauty.

The Clouded Lights "Stranded On The Path" E.P. (thecloudedlights.bandcamp.com)

The Clouded Lights offer up an excellent balance of post punk and power pop that blends the primal vibes of early Psychedelic Furs with the clever hooks of Squeeze. The Flange driven guitar riff of "Borrowed Hearts" gets everything rolling with it's climbing chords and freight train like beat. "Barter With The World" is more in the pocket and melodic and features a brilliant vocal cadence that puts it over the top while the quick pace of "Could Someone Switch A Light On" features some truly amazing guitar work throughout. Overall "Stranded On The Path" is a well put together E.P. that takes me back to everything that was great about the early days of college radio but with a fresh, welcoming twist.

Six Records CMM Wants You To Know

Anneliese McCarthy "Daydream" E.P. (https://anneliesemccarthy.bandcamp.com)

New York City Singer/Songwriter Anneliese McCarthy delivers big with this new five song E.P. "Daydream". Her delicate indie folk style is highlighted by brilliant story telling and her dainty vocal stance. Songs like "Daydream" and "Blue/August" are full of spirit and passion while the lulling tones of "Seventeen" are highlighted by rich heartfelt melodies. Still I have to say "Westwood" is my favorite track of the five. It's loving energy and straightforward approach quickly create a vibe that's comforting, warm and sincere. A first-rate release from beginning to end.

Baby Vanga S/T E.P. (baby-vanga.bandcamp.com)

Here's a quick, no frills to the point E.P. from English rock n roll outfit Baby Vanga. "In The Head" is an upbeat jangle pop masterpiece that's backed by a relentless beat and punk attitude. It's uplifting hooks and stellar musicianship will have you singing along in no time. "Waves" keeps things moving along in grand style with an undeniably infectious rhythm highlighted by it's rolling baseline and punchy guitar attack. Looking forward to hearing what's next from this promising new band.

Queen "On Air" 3 X LP (queenonline.com)

This incredible triple LP set includes all six of Queen's BBC recording sessions. It really shows off just how amazing this band was as they blast through high energy renditions of classic cuts like "Stone Cold Crazy", "Keep Yourself Alive" and "We Will Rock You" (Fast Version). The levels of musicianship displayed on these recordings is off the charts. Brian May's playing is literally INSANE!!! Freddie is on fire the entire time and further cements himself as the best frontman of all time. John Deacon and Roger Taylor sound like a freight train busting through your speakers. Simply put this is a must have collection for Queen fans as it shows the band bashing things out in pure rock n roll fashion and still retaining their superior sound quality along the way. Truly Amazing

Rivoli "Isolation" E.P. (rivoliband.bandcamp.com)

Rivolli unleash a crushing blast of sonic intensity on their latest effort "Isolation". The galloping menace of opening track "Through The Night' sets the tone with it's dirge driven groove and gruff fuzzed out guitars. The pace quickens during the title cut as the band push the envelope even further with the desperate cry of "Isolation" ringing throughout the track. "Ethereal" has a more psychedelic spirit and hypnotic demeanor that makes you feel like you've stepped into a lost episode of The Twilight Zone while "Farewell" adds a lush, cinematic flair that winds things down well. A strong E.P. A highly recommended release that leaves me thirsting for more.

Sonder S/T LP (sonderboyz.bandcamp.com)

I've been absolutely loving this debut album from Belgian psych pop band Sonder. "Little Tim In A Sea of Sand" starts things out with it's rich soothing, atmospherics and tight in the pocket rhythm section. There's also some truly stellar keyboard work that adds balance to the shimmering tones that flow throughout the piece. Things move into a bit darker territory on "Circus Freak" as it's chiming guitars also offer a mood that's distant and cold while "Dreamlands" (Red Kites) is more bouncy and experimental. The band show off their synth pop side during "Electric" which serves as a two minute interlude that runs into the intricately structured "Flight Of The Last Bird". It's got a fun dance style groove to it that echoes the spirits of Blondie and Franz Ferdinand but with a much gloomier demeanor. Album closer "Shadow Horse" with it's swinging rhythm and well crafted hooks send the album off on a note of hope. An A+ record loaded with remarkable songs and undeniable originality.

The Flaming Lips "How??" Single (flaminglips.com)

"How??" the second single from the new Flaming Lips album 'Oczy Mlody" starts out at a dirge like pace as a wave of pulsating synths grind alongside Wayne Coyne's trademark voice. It's got a very bleak/apocalyptic feel to it that's also very colorful and glowing all at the same time. Eventually the tones shift into a more upbeat place only to fall back to the droning textures and minimal beat. It's deep psychedelic stance and radiant atmospherics give it an intense dramatic effect that's also very inviting and mysterious. I can't think of a better song that reflects the current state of the world. "Ozy Mlody" comes out January 13th 2017 and is sure to be one of the bands most important records to date.

Six Records CMM Wants You To Know

Belle-Skinner "We Shut Our Eyes" LP (belle-skinner.bandcamp.com)

Belle-Skinner is the brainchild of Albany/New York City singer/songwriter Maria Brosgol. Her latest release "We Shut Our Eyes" is a stunning collection of heart felt indie folk pieces, driven by Brosgol's captivating vocal delivery. Backed by a dynamic beat and slightly eerie demeanor, the title track quickly takes you to a world of mystery and intrigue. There's a sense of enlightenment that radiates with each note and emits a spirit of honesty and passion. The delicate flair of "Desert Waltz" features an intricate guitar riff alongside a moving performance by violinist Jahna Stanton while "And Then You Leave (Go On)" brings to mind classic 60's groups like The Ronettes, The Chordettes and The McGuire Sisters. The shuffling feel of songs like "The Double" and "Siren Song" show off even more range and diversity as Brosgol adds a more ethereal approach and unleashes a sense of power and poise that is simply second to none. The lulling presence of "Little Cuckoo Bird" brings everything to a close with it's delightful, chiming instrumentation and inspiring tone that offers a sense of hope, warmth and love. There's an undeniable charm to it that ties everything together and keeps you coming back for more. A brilliant release from one of the brightest new songwriters to come along in years.

Cushing "Curse Of Cushing" E.P. (cushingsound.bandcamp.com)

Really impressed by this new E.P. from Cushing out of Maine. These songs make great use of intense guitars and menacing structures that form a cauldron of rock n roll angst that brings to mind The Jesus Lizard, The Melvins and old Virginia favorites Sliang Laos. These guys can flat out play and they pull no punches while doing so. At times they bring in some more drawn out parts that only make things more dynamic and mysterious before going back to the blasting noise driven chaos. A spectacular release meant to be played LOUD

Exmaid "Neurotic Fantasies" E.P. (exmaid.bandcamp.com)

New Jersey musician Miranda Taylor delivers big with her latest musical endeavor Exmaid. This 5 track E.P. is full of powerful guitar based rock n roll songs that all have a bit of grit and grime to them that works well with Taylor's rich melodic vocals that move throughout each piece. "Sports" is a fuzz drenched ripper that's pushed by a driving beat and pumping bass line that reminds me of a cross between The Ramones and Throwing Muses. "Easy" adds a nice touch of atmospheric bliss to the mix that meshes well with the chainsaw style power chords, while the quick pace of "Gone" harnesses a much welcomed blast of relentless energy. A dirge laced version of the traditional folk song "Once I Had A Sweetheart" caps things off well as it's lush atmospheric spirit serves as a fitting end to this highly recommended debut. When reflecting on the writing and recording process of the E.P. Taylor said "I wrote these songs a few years ago and after taking a break from music I decided to record them. My friend Eric Bennett very kindly said he would do it and so we had at it over the summer. I played everything on the record partly out of necessity and partly to see how it worked and if I could do it. However, I wanted to get a band together so I asked one of my favorite bands, Psychic Teens, if they would play with me. THEY very kindly said yes. They make everything sound way better.". A remarkable release that leaves me wanting more.

Introversion "It's A Long Way Down" E.P. (introversion1.bandcamp.com)

Such a beautiful new release from French ambient artist Introversion. Each of these blissful soundscapes make for a unique listening experience that will challenge your ears as well as your mind. Opening piece "Innocence" is a cold, lulling composition that makes me think of the first steps you take out of your house after several days tucked inside during a winter mix of sleet and snow. There's a comforting presence to it that makes it undeniably appealing. There are a few more layers and textures throughout "The Haunting" as it's left of center vibe adds a touch of turmoil to things which flows perfectly into the calming spirit of "Desolation". The glowing tones and liquid like flow of "Escape" send waves of sonic beauty to your ears. It's peaceful stance and breezy attitude are very inviting to say the least. One of the most inspiring E.P.'s I've heard all year.

Jet Plane "Roots" Single (jet-plane.bandcamp.com)

Jet Plane are a melodic instrumental rock band based in Bryansk, Russia. "Roots" is the first track to be unveiled from the bands new album "Pipe Dream" which marks a first time collaboration with Japanese musicians/producers Akahiro Kido and Kashiwa Daisuke, This is an incredible track centered around the beautiful violin tones and radiant atmospherics the band create with pin point precision. The level of musicianship is simply off the charts and the track continues to gain momentum and intensity before reaching a level of sonic euphoria. A truly amazing piece of music that channels the spirits of Mogwai, Yndi Halda and the like. Get into it.

Joshua Hunt "Opiates Gave Me Sky In The Windowsill//My Bedroom In My Mom's House E.P. (joshuahart1.bandcamp.com)

Florida based experimental sound artist Joshua Hunt unleashes a brand new E.P. featuring four tracks of dark, psychedelic driven magic. Track "1" sounds like secret code being sent from a space station if it were being run by John Cage. There's a cunning spirit that floats underneath the vast array of ambient twists and turns. "2" is more menacing and doom like. There's a boldness to it all that is very cinematic and heavy and channels just the right amount of darkness with a hint of hope while "3" is softer and more free flowing. The 17 minute long "4" is an epic blast of colorful tones that serve as a spectacular journey through the a futuristic forest of audio bliss. A mind bending masterpiece of extraordinary magnitude.

"Five For Friday" with Chicago Psych/Pop band Electric Sheep

Electric Sheep are a dual singer-songwriter fronted Psychedelic Pop band from Chicago. Rooted in 60s pop song craft, E-sheep often scale back to hooky groovy psych. Their new album "The Exciting New Sounds Of Electric Sheep" is available today from the bands bandcamp page. Jonathan Extract and Devin Nolan who both sing and play guitar along with bassist Leon Nguyen and drummer Anthony Wojtal share some of their favorite songs in this weeks edition of "Five For Friday" but first have a listen to the albums first single "Headscrew".

The Dentists - Had An Excellent Dream

Songs with great opening riffs as their main draw are highly seductive, and fairly hard to write. This Dentists song just has such a strong sense of attitude, nostalgia, and classicness all wrapped up in that jangly repeating riff. One could take a couple guesses at what kind of music the Dentists were influenced by, probably some of the same old 60’s psych numbers we’re listening to, but “I Had An Excellent Dream” doesn’t sound really referential, instead it’s a little vile of distilled psych rock, reflective of their own era, and their own voice; something the genre of psych should aim for.

The Calico Wall - I'm Living In Sickness

When I first heard I'm a Living Sickness by The Calico Wall, I was driving around Chicago listening to a local college radio station. I had to pull over suddenly on the side of the road to find out what it was. I wasn't sure if it was an old song or a new one, but, it was one of those songs that really got me excited, like I came across a lost treasure, and what a lost treasure it is. Two minutes and forty one seconds of some of the most demented psych rock I've ever heard come out of the late 60's. It's not your typical "peace and love" hippie stuff where there's flowers in young girl's hair and everyone's holding hands and singing kumbaya. This song is like a really bad acid trip where all you can see is the darkest parts of your soul reflected into the world. So, if you're into some of the stranger and darker fringes of the first wave of psych rock, I cannot recommend this song highly enough.

David Bowie - Girl Loves Me

Blackstar, which was recorded with Donny McCaslin and his band, features the elegant rhythmic skills of Mark Guiliana behind the kit. The album itself is quite the masterpiece, but “Girl Loves Me” in particular stands out to me. The layers ghosted snare notes and fills that bleed across measures add a multitude of texture to this very clean and methodical composition. The somber chords of the synth and guitar really lift the drums into the fore; putting a spotlight on the big, hip-hop inspired downbeats. This song certainly fits the mantra of “less is more”, but that’s what makes it so alluring.

Dois Mil E Um – Os Mutantes

This song is really batshit crazy, but extremely melodic, and overall as one condensed piece, really pop. How Os Mutantes got all that squeezed together is admirable as a songwriter. It starts out as a sort of demented folk song, and quickly takes a hairpin turn into heavy psych rock, and then it dissolves into chaos, only to come smoothly back into the original theme. The overlaying guitars creeping in an out, tempo and rhythm changes, the outstanding harmonies, and the total out-there middle sections are all cool, but that it all works as a solid pop number makes this one of my favorite songs.

The Clean - Anything Could Happen

Some songs are really about the attitude. “Anything Could Happen” boiled down is kinda like a happy campfire song chugging along. But in lieu of Kumbaya, you got some angsty dissonant and deceptive lyrics. Mixed with the shit tones on the guitar, and I-don’t-give-a-fuck vibe coming from the Clean, “Anything Could Happen” is endlessly appealing for us. Lots of people do junk garage rock in Chicago, I can’t go to a DIY show without hearing some rockers wearing brimmed hats doing their rendition of the angsty kumbaya garage song. Occasionally, despite my best judgment, some of those songs are really endearing, and then I keep going back to these damn shows and drinking too much Old Style and..well anyways…the Clean are awesome.

Six Records CMM Wants You To Know

Airlift "Policy" E.P. (airliftnyc.bandcamp.com)

New York City's Airlift deliver a pair of melodic, heartfelt songs that feature rich guitars, powerful vocals and a top notch rhythm section that keep things moving well. "Policy Of Containment" is a driving number that incorporates a straight forward rock sound with twisted atmospherics and an underlying element of mystery while "Like A Borderline" is faster paced and channels more of a late 80's/early 90's college rock approach that comes off like a cross between Dramarama and Seaweed. It's climbing, octave style guitar playing and inspiring vocal delivery give it an undeniable appeal. A refreshing blast of epic rock n roll from beginning to end.

Bash & Pop "On The Rocks" Single (Fat Possum Records) (tommmystinson.com)

So if you haven't heard Tommy Stinson has reformed Bash & Pop and the band will release a brand new album called "Anything Could Happen" in January, their first since 1992's "Friday Night Is Killing Me". Lead single "On The Rocks" is a gritty, swagger filled number that see's the former Replacements bassist returning to lead vocal and guitar duties in fine form. The track is full of the kind of charming hooks and catchy vocal melodies you'd expect from Stinson and really showcases how much of an incredible songwriter he truly is. A much welcomed blast of no frills rock n roll.

Hope Sandoval & The Warm Inventions "Let Me Get There" Single featuring Kurt Vile (hopesandoval.com)

The second single from the new Hope Sandoval & The Warm Inventions album "Until The Hunter" is a duet with indie darling Kurt Vile. It's breezy laid back feel showcases Sandoval's delicate trademark voice and Vile's stoic drawl over a backdrop of punchy guitars that remind me of something from one of Paul McCartney's 70's solo records. There's also the undeniable country feel that always seems to find it's way into Sandoval's music that I just can't get enough of. So wonderful to see her making more and more music in recent years. A remarkable effort indeed.

Iggy Pop "Post Pop Depression: Live At The Royal Albert Hall" LP/DVD (iggypop.com)

Iggy Pop takes his Post Pop Depression Tour to The Royal ALbert Hall and delivers a performance for the ages that's captured on this live LP/DVD. Backed by Josh Homme and Dean Fertita of Queens Of The Stone Age and Dean Fertita of Arctic Monkeys Iggy blasts through unforgettable renditions of "Lust For Life", "The Passenger","Sister Midnight" and "China Girl". My personal favorites are the raunchy romp of "Sixteen" and primal energy of "Tonight" as the combination of grit and swagger that flows throughout those tracks is absolutely crushing. At 69 years old Iggy is still as phenomenal as ever and this performance will show you why.

Jared Mancuso "Roll Over" Single (www.jaredmancusomusic.com)

The first thing that strikes me about Jared Mancuso's music is the amount of fun he seems to be having while making it. "Roll Over" the first single from his new album "Superdope" is a bouncy rock n roll track highlighted by Mancuso's straight forward vocal delivery and energetic guitar riffs. The track also makes great use of a violin which creates a nice dynamic alongside the bass and drums. Add in this hilariously executed Halloween themed video and you have all the key ingredients for an underground classic. The "Superdope" album release show takes place on Thursday November 17th at Bowery Electric in New York City with special guests Venture, TBC and Davide Moscato.

Sorry Escalator S/T Cassette E.P. (sorryescalator.bandcamp.com)

An impressive debut from this U.K. based band that follows in the footsteps of Teenage Fan Club, My Bloody Valentine and Loop. Opener "Another Shade Of Blue" is full of powerful fuzz driven guitar tones and wavering riffs that create a wash of hypnotic sounds while "Dionysus" is a cleverly written gem full of energetic hooks and powerful choruses. The controlled chaos of "Sissy Spacek" is highlighted by one of the most menacing guitar performances you will hear anywhere, as the shrill reverb drenched sounds offer a blast of sonic mayhem that's simply unstoppable. Things wind down with the sludgy, dirge like flow of "(Remit) Like I Do" which moves like a tidal wave of shoegaze bliss. Looking forward to hearing what these promising upstarts come up with next.

Six Records CMM Wants You To Know

Niko Yoko "Something's Coming" (nikoyoko.bandcamp.com)

Paris based indie psych project Niko Yoko really get down on their debut release. Opening number "Don't Let It Go" kicks things off with it's infectious rhythm and Lou Reed like vocal stance. The jangling feel of "Something's Coming" serves as a warm ray of sunshine on a chilly Fall day while "Man Down" is a glistening rocker that harnesses a brilliance and power that's second to none. Everything comes to a close on "In The Afternoon" which showcases their spectacular songwriting style and their undeniable love for the Velvet's. An inspiring debut that is sure to be on repeat here at CMM Headquarters.

Rose Dive "Distant Days" B/W "Sunshine" Single (rosedive.bandcamp.com)

Rose Dove offer up a delightful pair of indie pop gems highlighted by a dainty vocal cadence and an array of beautiful instrumentation. "Distant Days" is an upbeat, bouncy track that's catchy and warm. The chiming guitar tones and driving beat really make it a fun listen while "Sunshine" has a bit more grit and grime to it that sits well next to it's melodic hooks that put everything over the top. These are the types of songs that will dig into your subconscious and have you humming them in your head after the first listen. An enticing debut that leaves me wanting more.

Sleep Cycle S/T LP (sleepcycleonline.bandcamp.com)

England's Sleep Cycle harness a sound that's both ethereal and powerful. The enormous riffs that flow throughout "Casualties of Distraction" and "Empires" get things started in fine form. Both pieces feature highly textured guitar work that creates a hypnotic mood and works it's way up into more intense territory. "Fornix" is ambient and eerie sounding while "Glass Hill" is more melodic and laid back and features a brilliant rolling bass line and clever in the pocket drumming. Everything culminates together on "It's There, You Just Need To Look" which is really the bands finest moment of the entire LP. The guitar tones are some of the best I've heard in a long time and make for a colorful sonic landscape that will have you coming back to hear it over and over. Things get really mechanical during "Solar" while "Living in Silence" explores a slightly darker approach that reflects elements of jazz. The blissful sounds of "Ever And Never" closes out the album with it's catchy hooks and top notch musicianship and cements the album as one of the most promising instrumental releases of the year.

J Mascis "Doctor Robert" (Howard Stern's Tribute To The Beatles Revolver)

It's no secret I'm a long time fan of Mr. Mascis work. He's been quite busy with the new Dinosaur Jr. album, constant touring, solo records and a variety of covers in recent times. Here he gives his take on The Beatles "Dr Robert" for the Howard Stern curated "Revolver" tribute album. The guitars on this are absolutely crushing as you get all the ferocious fuzz tone you would expect alongside J's slightly comatose voice we all know and love. The compilation which also features contributions from Cheap Trick and James Taylor is apparently only available on SiriusXM Radio’s Howard 101 Channel but luckily you can here J's cut here via youtube.

Leonard Cohen "You Want It darker" Single (leonardcohen.com)

The title track from Leonard Cohen's 14th studio album "delves into an unflinching exploration of the religious mind." The song begins with the sounds of a cryptic choir and a very familiar and seductive bass line. At last the voice of the now 82 year old man who's first record was released nearly 50 years ago graces us with the words "If You Are The Dealer, I'm Out Of The Game", "If You Are The Healer, It Means I'm Broken and Lame". The lyrics are as haunting as ever and it feels like Cohen's words are as much a final testament on his own life and career as they are a reflection on the current state of the world. "I didn't know I had permission to murder and to maim. You want it darker". Hopefully this will not be Cohen's final record but if it is then he is leaving us with what can only be described as the perfect goodbye.

The Flaming Lips "The Castle" Single (flaminglips.com)

The first single from The Flaming Lips upcoming album "Oczy Mlody" begins with a familiar drone that quickly dives into a thumping beat, followed by the trademark vocals of front man Wayne Coyne. The track marks a return to the more breezy laid back flow of some of the bands previous records as the music is very uplifting and magical sounding. "Oczy Mlody" means “Eyes Of The Young” in Polish and according to Coyne the title originally caught his eye because it sounded like the drug Oxycodone. The album is set to drop in January of 2017

From Mountains S/T E.P. (frommountains.bandcamp.com)

English instrumental post rock unit From Mountains deliver big on their debut E.P. with 5 tracks full of eerie yet melodic riffs, galloping drums and rich cinematic soundscapes full of intrigue and fervor. Opening piece "Outside The Joybox" is anchored by a welcoming piano part that's followed by a brilliant blast of breathtakingly beautiful guitars and a rhythm section that ties everything together perfectly. "Juno Meets Jupiter" makes me think of a part from Mike Oldfield's legendary composition "Tubular Bells" if it were being covered by Mogwai while "When We Painted The Sky" sounds much more isolated and cold. Things wrap up with the melodic sounds of "Eta Carinae" which features a calming mid tempo pace surrounded by layers of glistening guitars that build to a gorgeous peak. A spectacular release from beginning to end.

Hook Turns "Night Shift" (hookturns.bandcamp.com)

Hook Turns debut album "Night Shift" is a brilliant collection of indie rock bliss that draws from a heavy singer/songwriter point of view. Headed by Australian musician Andrew Bonnici, the album displays a unique brand of intensity and charm on songs like "Same Old Mess" and "Multitudes" and you really get a sense of sincerity and the experiences that went into crafting the record. "Inland Sea" has an undeniable flair that's full of catchy melodies that one could easily link to the Jesus And Mary Chain or The Smiths but with an underlying country feel, while "Las Manos" is nothing short of epic. When asked about his process for making the album,Bonnici says "Night Shift" was recorded in my country studio, an old hall in the farming town of Elmore, located 2 hours north of Melbourne Australia. The album was self produced and the recording was done in the middle of the night. I've also worked night shift for the past 12 years, so the album explores the space and time between sundown and a waking world." "Night Shift" has all the makings of a classic as the passion and fire that's projected throughout the songs are sure to win over fans from around the globe.

Philadelphia based experimental musician Matt Kelly draws you into his colorful and inviting world of sound on his latest release "A Night Drive Down a Familiar Road You've Never Been Down". The title track starts out with an ambient lull that quickly builds and builds almost like it's getting closer and closer to a mysterious being of some kind. The beautiful textures Matt creates are simply second to none and it's the kind of track that will have you discovering something new about it every time you hear it. "A Picture Of A Picture" creates an ominous mood as it's massive presence offers up a tidal wave of tones and drones. It's got a hypnotic, cinematic feel to it that is simply brilliant. An inspiring release from beginning to end.

Trees, Perfectly Still "CL/41/2/99 " E.P. (treesperfectlystill.bandcamp.com)

Trees. Perfectly Still is the solo ambient/experimental project of Vancouver musician Isaac Jeffs. The recordings harness all kinds of sounds into collages that are at times distant and bleak yet full of peace and beauty. "The Relevance Of Opinion" features some cold piano sounds alongside a wash of grayish textures that are later joined by a sea of psychedelic like voices and blistering power electronics. "We Won't Know" presents a laid back beat and a pulsating drone that serves as a backdrop to the liquid like flow of vibrant tones that move with blissful appeal. There's also some amazing guitar sounds that really put this track over the top and give it an even more subliminal feel. The tide shifts into hypnotic territory on "Mothers Earth" as a collection of shimmering sounds swarm around a delightful array of mind bending vocals. Reflecting on the E.P. Jeffs says "The songs were almost completely recorded on a Zoom field recorder. I recorded at home, at work, on streets, on a ferry, etc. Most of the sounds featured were sounds i hear on a daily basis as well. Trying to find beauty in the awful sounds of a repeating life. the title "CL/41/2/99" are the 4 bus/train routes i take in a circle to and from work almost every day.So in full, the E.P. is about trying to live in an endless cycle without going mad I guess. And vaguely points out the madness in doing the same thing every day." "CL/41/2/99" is a remarkable achievement and I look forward to hearing more of Isaac's beautiful work for years to come.

Triko "Atina Bojadži" LP (trikoo.bandcamp.com)

"Atina Bojadži", the debut album from Belgrade, Serbia's Triko is one of the most inspiring albums you will hear all year. The band have a knack for delivering atmospheric guitar driven songs full of rich vocal melodies and catchy hooks. "Kontrolni" with it's intricate riffs and pin point rhythm section sets the pace for other uplifting numbers like "Triko" and "Mali Odmor". There's a feeling of hope that moves with each of these tracks that can't be ignored. The band feed off of each other well and you can tell they love playing together. Stand out number "Kosmoza" channels a bit of Sonic Youth and Yo La Tengo with it's ethereal stance and radiant energy while the more abrasive "Tremolo" adds a nice bit of angst to the mix. All of the songs show off their own unique personality in a big way. Simply put, "Atina Bojadži" is a very promising debut from one of my favorite new bands.
