CMM's 18 Favorite Songs of 2018

This year was full of some truly incredible songs from new up and coming artists as well as established bands we already know and love . It was hard to narrow this down but here are 18 of my favorite songs from 2018.

1. Joan Of Arc "Real Punk Kid"

A true anthem. One of the most heartfelt and uplifting songs I've heard in years. Vibrant, intense and powerful.

2. Courtney Barnett "Charity"

Such a catchy track with some of the best lyrics I heard all year. Very uplifting yet melancholy at the same time. My favorite track from Courtney's latest album "Tell Me How You Really Feel".

3. Spiritualized "I'm Your Man"

Incredible dynamics, lyrics that hit home and one of the best guitar solos you will ever hear.

4. Witch Watch "Seconds"

A down right infectious song from this Minneapolis based band. Don't be surprised if you find yourself humming along to this halfway through the first listen. Golden.

5. Superchunk "Eraser"

What a hook. This band just gets better and better with age. Probably sang along to this 1,000 times this year. Sooooo good.

6. Guide By Voices "Space Gun"

Another classic from the most prolific band in rock n roll. Amazing video directed by the incredibly talented Hunter Christy.

7. Mayflower Madame "Premonition"

Another dark, mysterious and truly hypnotic number from Noway's premier psych/goth unit.

8. Jon Spencer "Do The Trash Can"

Pure rock n roll madness. What more would you expect from this garage rock mastermind.

9. Frankie Teardrop Dead "Joy In Division"

Psychedelic, uplifting, mind bending bliss from this London based Psychedelic rock unit. One of the many highlights from their album "All You Need Is Love And Fucking Peace".

10. Valita "Vines"

Powerfully haunting in the most amazing way possible.

11. Casino Garden "Ride"

This song radiates with a unique power and energy like no other. Can't wait to hear what this band does next.

12. Wet Dreams "Bad Boy"

It doesn't get much more rock n roll than this. Do yourself a favor and annihilate your speakers with this one

13. Body/Head "You Don't Need"

A droning, mind bending masterpiece from this experimental guitar duo made up of Kim Gordon and Bill Nace.

14. Deaf Wish "FFS"

So much energy. Killer guitar tones and tons of swagger. Play loudly.

15. Jess Williamson "I See The White"

One of the most well crafted and well performed tracks of 2018. Delightful in every way.

16. Cushing "Snow Angel"

Cushing bring the menace once again with this cagey dirty track from their latest release "Blood Of Cushing".

17. Forth Wanderers "Nevermine"

I love the pace and cadence of this song. A stunning vocal performance that stands over brilliant layers of melodic guitars.

18. Statue "E"

Amazing fuzz guitar sounds, great arrangement and energy. A true gem from the bands latest album "Casper".

CMM's Twenty Favoriite Songs of 2018 (So Far)

2018 has already been a phenomenal year for new music. Here's 20 of my favorite songs from this year (So Far)...

1. Joan Of Arc "Real Punk Kid" (Joyful Noise Recordings)

A brilliant song that's as comforting as it is beautiful. Melina Ausikaitis voice is truly unique while founding member Tim Kinsella and the the rest of the band continue to explore new territories throughout the track. Absolutely inspiring.

2. Reveries "Existential Anxiety" reveriespnw.bandcamp.com

Seattle shoegaze/post rock unit Reveries offer up one of the most promising E.P.'s of 2018 as their self titled debut release is full of huge sounding guitars, underlying pop melodies and relentless drumming. Lead track "Existential Anxiety" is absolutely punishing and breathtaking.

3. Mayflower Madame "Premonition" (mayflowermadame.bandcamp.com)

This band never disappoint when it comes to creating dark and eerie music that is very reflective of the settings in their native Norway. "Premonition" continues down that dark path adding in layers of new nuances and curiosities.

4. Black Light White Light "King Kong" (blacklightwhitelight.bandcamp.com)

An excellent blend of shoegaze, 60's psych and 90's alternative rock. Just one of many top notch numbers from their latest album "Horizons".

5. Superchunk "Erasure" (Merge)

I can't get enough of this track. Super catchy, well delivered and sure to have you humming along in no time.

6. Guided By Voices "Space Gun" (GBV Inc)

Another stand out track from the always prolific GBV. "Space Gun" has quickly become one of my favorite GBV records.

7. Cushing "Little Devil" (cushingsound.bandcamp.com)

An amazing new track from this raging noise rock trio from Portland Maine. Their sound absolutely huge and the level of musicianship is off the charts.

8. Body Head "You Don't Need" (Matador)

Angular, menacing and dirge driven "You Don't Need" is pretty spectacular. Kim Gordan and Bill Nance create a haunted yet colorful dual guitar attack that's enhanced even more by the incredible production work of Justin Pizzoferrato.

9. Spiritualized "I'm Your Man" (Fat Possum)

This track is pretty much perfect. Can't wait to take in the entire new album.

10. I Need A Plastic Face "Debris" (ineedaplasticface.bandcamp.com)

So happy that this band reached out to me about there amazing music. Possibly the most original band I've come across in years.

11. Today Junior "Skate Punx" (todayjunior.bandcamp.com)

I've loved listening to all the Today Junior tracks that they have been releasing recently but this one is my favorite. Fun, catchy, uplifting and warm.

12. Whisper Suite "Sun" (whispersuite.bandcamp.com)

Canadian husband and wife duo Whisper Suite offer up this glowing track that showcases their incredible song writing abilities and rich vocal delivery and I've kept this one on repeat the last few months.

13. Get Up Kids "Maybe" (Polyvinyl)

Get Up Kids are back. Enough said haha

14. Forth Wanderers Nevermine" (Sub Pop)

Been loving on this band for a minute. So into this new record. Delicate, soothing and a little bit grey.

15. Guided By Voices "See My Field" (GBV Inc)

Another brilliant cut from their latest album "Space Gun". Incredible video too.

16. Sick Shit "Wet Lung (sickshit.bandcamp.com)

Blistering track off this New Jersey hardcore/punk outfits latest 7" "Thick Spit". The best hardcore band going today in my opinion.

17. Jon Spencer "Trash Can" (In The Red)

Unreal groove, unreal guitars. Just an overall bad ass track from the legendary Jon Spencer's first solo album out soon on In The Red.

18. Twilight Fields "When I Saw You" (twilightfields.bandcamp.com)

A touching and absolutely stunning track from Canadian recording project Twilight Fields aka Allister Thompson.

Six Records CMM Wants You To Know

Forth Wanderers "Nevermine" Single (Sub Pop)

Loving this latest track from indie rock darlings Forth Wanderers. Led by the songwriting duo of guitarist Ben Guterl and vocalist Ava Trilling the group have come a long way in just a short amount of time, releasing two E.P.'s and one full length album 2016's "Slop". "Nevermine" is from the groups sophomore LP and their first for Sub Pop. The track has a swoon like vibe to it as Trilling's beautiful vocals takes center stage alongside guitar sounds that range from intricate and clean to dirty powerful octave rock tones. Overall the track shows off the bands incredible use of dynamics and a "loud/quiet" song structure that comes off incredibly well. The new self titled album will be available April 27th.

Guided By Voices "See My Field" Single (GBV INC)

So the new Guided By Voices album "Space Gun" is officially out today and I just had to write about my favorite track from the record "See My Field". Having grown up as the son of a NASA Dad images of space and space exploration always make me feel right at home so when I first watched the video directed by Hunter Christy (www.hunterchristy.com) I was blown away by the depiction of this young GBV fan being launched into space. The song has all the aspects that make up a Robert Pollard classic. Great guitar sounds, a driving rhythm and just the right amount of rawness that rests alongside Pollard's trademark vocal. Play this loud and play it often as it's essential listening as always.

Liz Phair - “Divorce Song” (Girly-Sound Version) (Matador)

This year marks the 25th anniversary of Liz Phair’s landmark debut album "Exile in Guyville" and to celebrate Matador Records are releasing a comprehensive box set featuring 7 LPs cataloging the "Guyville" era. It also includes the first official restored audio of all three 1991 Girly-Sound tapes which have been meticulously restored from the original copies of the cassettes and an extensive book containing an oral history by Jason Cohen including interviews with Phair, Chris Brokaw, Brad Wood, John Henderson and more, plus essays by Phair and journalist Ann Powers. "Divorce Song" is a absolute classic that embodies Phair's no compromises stance and songwriting brilliance in true form. This anniversary Box Set will be available on May 4th.

Shade Shelter "I Like Your Shirt. Which One? Both." E.P. (shadeshelter.bandcamp.com)

Shade Shelter's debut E.P. features some of the most warped and original sounding songs you will hear anywhere and it feels like they are having the time of their lives while unleashing this collection of audio madness on our ears. "Depressive Realism" combines a bit of Happy Monday's like swagger mixed with a side order of "New Jack Swing". It's got some familiar tones that have been mixed up and rearranged in ways like never before. "Constructive Pessimism" has more of a Yes meets 80's sci-fi feel while "Solitary Confinement" mixes in elements of jazz, new age, and classic rock alongside a sea of glitch generated sounds and experimental madness. The lo-fi feel of "Pretend Your Happy" is the icing on the cake so to speak as it really solidifies the record as a true original. Think Frank Zappa having an in depth conversation with Sun Ra backstage at a Devo show.

Sick Shit "Thick Spit" 7" (sickshit.bandcamp.com)

"Thick Spit", Sick Shit's brand new 7" just might be their most relentless material to date. Lead off track "Discarded" begins with the manic sounds of vocalist Sami Kaiser and it sets the tone for the blistering brand of hardcore the band has come to be known for. "Wet Lung" is just flat out pissed sounding and features some of the most insane drumming I've heard in years. "Trichotillomania" has more of a straight punk riff to it that mixes things up nicely while "Cohesive" and "Clot" are both skull crushing blasts of true intensity. I've had this one on repeat for the last few weeks and I really can't get enough of it. Highly recommended.

Tracyanne & Danny "Home & Dry" Single (Merge Records)

Tracyanne & Danny is a collaboration between Tracyanne Campbell from Camera Obscura and Danny Coughlan from Crybaby. "Home & Dry" the lead single from the bands self titled debut album is an exquisite number that's highlighted by Campbell's compelling and soothing voice. The songs got a very classy feel to it and their musicianship is nothing short of stellar. Reflecting on the song Campbell says "“It’s about the movement of time, the inevitability of things not staying the same. Just when you think things are sorted and ok, something changes and they no longer are.” The album produced by Orange Juice’s Edwyn Collins will be released on May 25th courtesy of Merge Records.

Six Records CMM Wants You To Know

Animal Flag "Why" Single (Flower Girl Records)

"Why" the latest single from the upcoming Animal Flag album "Void Ripper" is full of lush undertones and powerful dynamics. There's plenty of angst to go with the looming atmospherics that radiate throughout the track. Things also reach a peak of almost orchestral like levels as a sea of instruments come together to make some of the most intense sounds you will hear anywhere. Finally a lulling feeling comes over everything as Animal Flag founder Matthew Politoski's voice fades out giving way to a wave of flourishing soundscapes. "Void Ripper" will be out April 13th courtesy of Flower Girl Records.

Ceremony "Closer" single (ceremonyeastcoast.bandcamp.com)

Fredericksburg Virginia's Ceremony are set to release their fifth album "East Coast" in May. The first single "Closer" is quite possibly the most mind bending song the group has ever created. Led by a dirge driven bass line and galloping drums, Ceremony founder John Fedowitz incorporates elements of noise rock, goth rock and shoegaze that makes for a cagey mix of eclectic styles. There's an undeniable feeling of danger and dismay that runs throughout the track while colorful yet harsh psychedelic vibes annihilate your speakers.

Guided By Voices "Kingdom Of Cars" B-Side (GBV Inc.)

"Kingdom Of Cars" is yet another tremendous GBV song. Found on the B-Side of the recent "Space Gun" 7" single and sung by guitarist Doug Gillard the song offers aspects of prog rock, psych rock and power pop. Gillard's voice is on point as always and it meshes well with the quirky bass line and modulated guitar riffs. At times I also get a really strong Bowie feel as there's some dreamy nuances at the end of the piece that put the track over the top. Their new album "Space Gun" will be available March 23rd.

Jess Williamson "I See The White" Single (Mexican Summer)

After spending a decade living in Austin, Jess Williamson moved to Los Angeles in 2016 where she would write and develop the songs that make up her upcoming album "Cosmic Wink". Lead single "I See The White" is a truly amazing song that brings to mind the glory days of 70's singer songwriters mixed with a solid influence from artists like Chan Marshall and Patti Smith. Reflecting on the album Williamson says “This track is a love track and it’s additionally sort of me throwing a tantrum. It’s begging for solutions and making a couple of calls for too.”. The video directed by Eli Welbourne is stunning to say the least and enhances the songs brilliance even more. "Cosmic Wink" will be available May 11th via Mexican Summer and Williamson will be out on tour in the U.S. throughout April and May.

TV Slime "Slime Demon" (tvslime.bandcamp.com) E.P.

Chicago punk/hardcore unit TV Slime offer up this four song skull crushing E.P. that clocks in at under 10 minutes. The tracks are absolutely relentless as layers of nasty guitars and pounding drums run you over like a bulldozer. The manic sounding vocals really push things to the edge and add an even more psychotic feel to the mix and I must say these tracks have one of the best sounding distorted bass tones I've ever heard. Fans of no frills, in your face punk rock are sure to love this. Now I just gotta see this band live.

Youngest Of Elders "Metaphors & Maps" (Single) (youngestofelders.bandcamp.com)

San Francisco based rock outfit Youngest Of Elders are back with a new uplifting single called "Metaphors & Maps". The track is full of rich hypnotic hooks and catchy guitar melodies while the production is top notch across the board and matched by stellar musicianship and a hopeful and positive presence. The band harness a fine balance between a straight up rock sound and more ambient territory. Another inspiring effort from this remarkable project led by Vocalist/Guitarist Jesse Gale.

Six Records CMM Wants You To Know

Flying "Three of Them/Shiver River" Single (flyyingg.bandcamp.com)

One of my favorite new bands are back with this impressive pair of cosmic psychedelic tracks. "Three Of Them" shows off the top notch musicianship that shined so bright on their previous E.P. and adds even more dynamics to their sound as the shimmering guitars and atmospheric vocals blend together perfectly. "Shiver River" has a similar feel but incorporates more of a prog-rock element to everything that offers up a welcoming and lulling effect. Overall another stellar release from this up and coming band from Ann Arbor MI.

Guide By Voices "Space Gun" Single

From their upcoming album of the same name "Space Gun" is classic GBV. Robert Pollard and crew show no signs of slowing down and it looks like there will be lots of shows and rock n roll madness throughout 2018. The 15 tracks album is due out on March 23rd.

MGMT "Hand It Over" Single

Another great single from the upcoming MGMT album "Little Dark Age" which is their first since 2013. This soothing number is full of mind numbing synths that move alongside a comforting beat and an "epic" yet "subtle" vocal delivery. There's a presence of 60's psych and 70's singer songwriter styles mixed with a more modern feel that really makes for the perfect balance. Enjoy this beautiful lyric video directed by Old Man Future and Shively Humperdink.

Oh Sees “Dead Medic” & “A Few Days Of Reflection” 12" (Castle Face Records)

Awesome little bonus 12" from one of the most prolific bands in the game. "Dead Medic" is an outtake from their latest full length "ORC" and is essentially an extended jam backed by a frantic beat, plenty of flourishing piano sounds and experimental swells. Think Sun Ra meets Hawkwind. "A Few Days Of Reflection" is a cover of Swedish band Träd, Gräs & Stenar. It's cavernous feel and jam style structure are both intriguing and introspective". A really enjoyable release that documents the continuous expansion of John Dwyer's musical vision well.

Plastic Farm "Hope Hypnotic" E.P. (plasticfarm.bandcamp.com)

Can't say enough great things about this E.P. From the song arrangements and instrumentation to the production and experimental aspects everything is truly top notch. The title track builds and builds into a rich organic sounding wall of atmospheric bliss while "Eyes Closed" and "25" bring beautifully melodic hooks to the forefront. "Musk" is a bit more mysterious and moody as a sea of underlying nuances really push this track over the top. The perfect soundtrack to these unbelievably cold winter nights we've been having recently.

Tonals "Smog" E.P. (tonals.bandcamp.com)

So excited about this new E.P. from Canadian lo-fi project Tonals. "Fin" starts things off with an infectious beat and catchy hook that really gets things going out of the gate before giving way to the more laid back and somber "Good Times". "Smog" brings you back to an upbeat, feel good spirit and features some really impressive melodic guitar work while "You Want Something More" closes things out in an almost cinematic/end credits kind of way which I really enjoy. There's a warm, vibrant energy in all these tracks that I find really inspiring.

17 Favorite Songs Of 2017 So Far

So 2017 is nearly half over and it's been a phenomenal year for music so far. So many amazing new albums and songs. Here's a rundown on 17 of my favorite songs that have come out so far.

1. The Psychotic Monks "It's Gone"

"It's Gone" the opening piece from The Psychotic Monks latest album "Silence Slowly and Madly Shines" is one of the most menacing songs you will hear all year. It's dark, mysterious, psychedelic vibe draws you in and never lets you go. Absolutely crushing.

2. Mayflower Madame "Drown"

Released just before their first U.S. tour "Drown" is one of Mayflower Madame's darkest and most impressive tracks to date. Look for a new album from this Norwegian psych rock outfit later this year.

3. A Deer A Horse "Backswimmer"

A Deer A Horse have been one of my favorite bands over the last few years and "Backswimmer" the title track from their latest E.P. ushers in a new direction and even more sense of power and determination to the bands sound. The trio will be out on the road touring all summer and fall.

4. Mariana Rivals "Take"

This California/Connecticut based synth pop unit deliver big on their latest single "Take" It's pumping bass line, passionate vocals and layers of shimmering synths are sure to get you singing along in no time.

5. News From Neptune "The Cold Open"

One of the most incredibly intricate and breathtakingly beautiful pieces you will hear anywhere. David Miller aka News From Neptune balances an array of sonic textures throughout this absolutely brilliant track.

6. Waxahatchee "Silver"

I can't get enough of this new track from Katie Crutchfield's Waxahatchee. It's one of the most infectious songs I've heard in a long time as the rich, melodic guitars and Crutchfield's voice are truly delightful.

7. Potential Red "Broken"

Canadian post punk/new wave outfit Potenial Red strike big on this brand new 4 song E.P. Lead off track "Broken" is an energetic piece full of swirling soundscapes and chiming guitars that fans of The Smiths and The Cure are sure to enjoy as it gets things started in grand fashion.

8. Telespace "A Click Away"

Swiss indie/psych unit Telespace quickly create an ethereal world through the cinematic sounds of "A Click Away" as it's calming dose of mind numbing guitars are soon followed by an intriguing left of center style vocal delivery.

9. Boss Hog "Shh Shh Shh"

This no frills groove filled rocker is one of the stand out tracks from the bands brand new album "Brood X".

10. Meatbodies "Creature Feature"

"Creature Feature" has an intensely odd slant to it all that's backed by a swaggering groove that reeks with undeniable appeal. It also includes some of the best guitar manipulation and fuzz driven leads you will hear anywhere that are equally matched by the deranged vocal cadence that sends the track into psychedelic overdrive.

11. Wanweird "Green Jelly"

Another fabulous track from Wanweird. This is the type of track that has just enough bounce to it that it's fun to sing along to but backs it up with a solid dose of 90's inspired rock n roll angst that pulls no punches.

12. The Red Shift "No One Else"

My favoriute track from this Ohio based power pop/punk rock bands debut album. Get into it

13. Guided By Voices "5 Degrees On The Inside"

One o the stand out tracks from the bands latest offering "August By Cake" which happens to be the 100th LP of founding member Robert Pollards career. Here's to 100 more.

14. Thurston Moore "Smoke Of Dreams"

"Smoke Of Dreams" from the new Thurston Moore album "Rock N Roll Consciousness" is a hazy, laid back number that reflects on his times in New York City and the underlying mystic of the past that surrounds it. There's a bit of a cathartic element to the song as if Moore is giving you a tour of his old haunts and allowing a bit of insight into a lost world.

15. Mathew Sweet "Trick"

"Trick" has all the key ingredients that make up an amazing Matthew Sweet song. Catchy hooks, melodic guitars and Sweet's signature vocal delivery.

16. faUSt "Lights Flickr"

From their brand new album "Fresh Air", "Lights Flickr" features the lyrics "Lights Flickr as I blink my eyes to the beat to the beat to the beat" as a frantic saxophone and sea of feedback blast over top of a thunderous beat. What more could you ask for???

17. Beach House "Chariot"

From the bands new "Rarities and B Sides" album, "Chariot" sounds like it could have been part of the soundtrack to a lost David Lynch film. Truly beautiful from beginning to end.

Six Records CMM Wants You To Know

Future Islands "Ran" Single (future-islands.com)

"Ran" is the lead single from Future Islands new album "The Far Field". As always singer Samuel T. Herring puts everything he has into his passionate, heart felt vocal delivery. He's quickly emerged as one of the more enigmatic frontmen in recent years and "Ran" is the perfect example of why he's deserving of such stature. Bassist William Cashion's signature swing is the driving musical force behind this one and he's complimented well by Gerrit Welmers's alluring atmospheric keyboards. It's infectious rhythm and lulling undertones are undeniably appealing and showcase the bands first rate song writing ability and drive to explore new horizons. "The Far Feild" is available today courtesy of 4 A.D.

Guided By Voices "August By Cake" 2 X LP (GBV INC)

Few musicians actually make it to their 5th album much less their 10th but there is a very minuscule group who can say they have made 100 albums. Off the top of my head I can think of maybe James Brown, Hawkwind and Merzbow. "August By Cake" is GBV founder Robert Pollard's 100th album and is also the bands first double album. Packed with amazing anthems like "Dr. Feelgood Falls Off The Ocean" and "5° Degrees On The Inside" the album marks the return of longtime guitarist Doug Gillard and first appearance by new acquisition Bobby Bare Jr. both of whom make their presence felt in full effect. Other favorites include the jangling sounds of "Hiking Skin", the Gillard penned "Goodbye Note" and psychedelic noise of "Fever Pitch". Here's to another 100 albums from the most prolific man in rock n roll.

Lucius "Million Dollar Secret" Single (ilovelucius.com)

It's no secret that I love Lucius, so I was really excited to hear this brand new single. Clocking in at a brief two minutes and twenty three seconds "Million Dollar Secret" is a soothing, passionate number that highlights Holly Laessig and Jess Wolfe signature voices in fine form while maintaining a breathtaking array of ambient tones. The track recently appeared on an episode of the HBO series Girls and the band are also featured in the upcoming David Byrne documentary "Contemporary Color" which you can check out the trailer for below.

Milon S/T E.P. (milonbristol.bandcamp.com)

Off the chart musicianship, cagey rhythms and brilliant dynamics is what you will find on this debut release from Bristol based art/jazz unit Milon. Led by tenor saxophonist Dino Christodoulou and electric guitarist Neil Smith the group unleash seven introspective pieces that continuously keep things on the move. The guitars range from crisp clean chords to frantic "strangulation" like solos while the saxophone style is more aching to that of Sonny Rollins. Drummer Roberto Nappi and bassist Pasquale Votino lay down an unbeatable foundation that's not afraid to wander into the outer realms of experimentation. The band sync together amazingly well, much like the four lions that got together to form Voltron. "Calabacin" is an absolute shredder while "Ayia Luna" and "Woody's Beat" offer up a bit more swing. This is the type of record that has me picking up something new with each and every listen. It challenges you while you can tell the band are challenging themselves throughout the entire thing. A truly stellar release across the board.

Sage "Procrastinate" LP (sagerulez.bandcamp.com)

Sage are a promising new band from Cochrane, Ontario Canada. Their debut E.P. is full of crushing riffs and pounding drums that harness a raw, primal energy that channels the likes of Dinosaur Jr, Buffalo Tom and Nirvana (they even do a cover of "Aneurysm". The catchy melodies and hooks on tracks like "Sinking Boats" and "Lukewarm" gel well with the dirge driven riffs of "Procrastinate" and "Fairweather Friends" while the slack rocker vocal stance and lofi-ish production won me over quickly as "Procrastinate" has all the key ingredients of a 90's underground rock n roll fan feast. A remarkable effort indeed.

Various Artists "Max's Kansas City 1976 and Beyond" 2 X LP (mvdb2b.com)

Max's Kansas City was a legendary New York City venue from the late 60's through the early 80's. The early day's saw appearances from Velvet Underground, New York Dolls, the Stooges, Bruce Springsteen and countless others until closing in 1974. The venue Reopened in 1975 under new management, Peter Crowley was hired as music director. The new young bands he booked helped spawn, in tandem with CBGBs, the New York City punk scene. In 1976 Peter compiled a studio album of acts associated with the club, Max's Kansas City 1976, to help promote the club. The album included the first recordings from legendary artists like Suicide, The Fast and Warhol-era veteran Wayne County, whose title-track gave a roll-call of many of the famous acts who'd regularly performed there. Now MVD entertainment has released this expanded 25 track 2 X LP/40 track 2 X CD titled "Max's Kansas City 1976 and Beyond" and it features tracks from New York Dolls, the Stillettos, the Offs, the Senders, Philip Rambow, VON LMO, Iggy Pop, Knots, Roland Alphonso, Cherry Vanilla, Nico, Joy Ryder, Johnny Thunders & the Heartbreakers and Sid Vicious. It's an incredible collection of raw in your face performances from the golden era of punk and also includes liner notes from Crowley himself. Simply put this is an essential collection of true New York punk/rock n roll.

Six Records CMM Wants You To Know

Ethan Gruska "Reoccurring Dream" Single (www.ethangruska.com)

Acclaimed singer/songwriter Ethan Gruska is set to release his debut album "Slowmotionary" on March 3rd via Sire Records. The passion and honesty expressed on lead single "Reoccurring Dream" is as real as it gets. Gruska's bare bones acoustic guitar and clever hooks move beautifully next to the dark, haunting like vibe that looms underneath it all. It's the kind of song that leaves everything on the line right out of the gate and never looks back. “What I hope is that people can sense the vulnerability in the writing," Gruska says while reflecting on the album. “I didn’t want perfect. I wanted true. I wanted honest. I didn’t want to hide behind anything. That’s why it’s produced and arranged the way it is. It’s very barren at certain moments. These songs slow down time for me, which is why I called it Slowmotionary. I needed to put myself out there musically and lyrically.” What I enjoy most about "Reocurring Dream" is that it creates a realm and presence that is all it's own but one that anyone who has experienced love and heartbreak can easily relate to. It's like a love letter sent from the battleground of life and is a song sure to cement Gruska as one of the top new artists of 2017.

Guided By Voices "Hiking Skin" (Advance Track) (GBV Inc)

Guided By Voices are set to release a brand new album called "August By Cake" this coming Spring. The 32 track release will be the bands first double LP and it will also mark the 100th album from the bands founder/guru Robert Pollard. "Hiking Skin" is the albums fist single and it's as classic GBV as you can get all the way from the big bodied guitars and signature swing to Pollards trademark vocal delivery and the tracks no punches pulled 2 minutes or less time frame. Essential listening as always.

Meatbodies "Creature Feature" Single (intheredrecords.com)

"Creature Feature" the latest single from Meatbodies brand new album "Alice" is a whirlwind of rock n roll chaos and deep psychedelia that brings to mind T Rex, Donovan and early Mercury Rev. It's got an intensely odd slant to it all that's backed by a swaggering groove that reeks with undeniable appeal. It also includes some of the best guitar manipulation and fuzz driven leads you will hear anywhere that are equally matched by the deranged vocal cadence that sends the track into psychedelic overdrive. "Alice" is available today courtesy of garage rock heavyweights In The Red Records.

Potential Red S/T E.P. (potentialred.bandcamp.com)

The gliding mood of "Day Dreaming" features a colorful blast of intricate instrumentation that sits well with it's lush angular stance while "Passive Wav." carries a striking presence that radiates with strength and beauty. All of the songs stick with a simple to the point time frame as the band keep things intriguing with each song, allowing just the right amount of room for experimentation. It's a style that chooses mystery and mood over flamboyance and flash. Overall a brilliant collection of songs from one of my favorite new bands.

The Red Shift "No One Else" Single (redshiftcin.bandcamp.com)

There's a lot to love about The Red Shift from West Chester Ohio. Their blistering power pop/punk rock sound has been blasting through my speakers here at CMM headquarters for the last couple years and "No One Else', the first single from the bands upcoming debut album harnesses all the energy and spirit that I'm such a big fan of. It's driving guitars and relentless rhythm section are as crushing as ever and there is no shortage of melodic hooks throughout this blistering number either as the track references classic bands like Jawbreaker and Smoking Popes with a heavy dose of Buddy Holly for good measure. Play this loud, play this often and stay tuned for news on the upcoming album.

Trip Hill "Saucers" E.P. (triphill.bandcamp.com)

Italian psychedelic rock unit Trip Hill take you on a cosmic journey on their latest E.P. "Saucers". Things kick off with the lush, free spirited feel of "Try To Elevate Your Mind" which creates a cinematic world full of spaced outguitars and primal garage rock intensity. The more experimental dimension of "Redeemer" flows steadily alongside the deep introspective stance of "Saucers" while the organic sounds of "Electro-Domestico" makes for another flavorful offering. Everything seems to build to the epic masterpiece known as "Rollercoaster". It's mechanical rhythm and futuristic stance really shows just how incredible Trip Hill are and why they are one of the most impressive and prolific projects to come out of Italy in recent years.A must for fans of mind bending, innovative psychedelic rock n roll.

Six Records CMM Wants You To Know

Christian Wheeler "Side 1" E.P. (christianwheeler.bandcamp.com)

Singer/songwriter Christian Wheeler shines bright on his debut E.P. simply titled "Side 1". From the opening moments of "Jackie (Oh)" you know you are in for something special as it's rich harmonies and clever hooks fuse the psychedelic pop of The Beatles with the swaggering flair of T Rex. The infectious vocal cadence and jangling guitar tones featured on "You!" will have you humming along for days on end while the laid back feel of "Screen Time" has me hoping for an early spring. The envelope is pushed once more as Wheeler introduces an early 60's crooner element to the mix during the passionate stance of "New". I really can't get enough of these songs. The musicianship and songwriting are stellar to say the least and the production and overall vibe of the recordings really put everything over the top. Looking forward to hearing what Wheeler has in store for "Side 2".

Circus Devils "Do The Nixon" (Advance Track) (rockathonrecords.com)

Self described as "art rock made by cavemen" and "high humor and low drama", Circus Devils, the long running project of Robert Pollard (Guide By Voices) and Tom and Tim Tobias are set to release "Laughs Last" their 17th and final album on February 24th. Advance track "Do The Nixon" features a clever stones like groove that's chocked full of Pollard's tongue in cheek lyrics which flow steadily throughout this two minute masterpiece. "I do the Jagger, and I clap my hands look both ways and cross the street". In addition to the final album the band will simultaneously release a best of album titled "Laughs Best (The Kids Eat It Up)" which is refereed to as "a collection of 30 speedy deliveries from rock and roll’s Twilight Zone – will leave you exhausted, satisfied, and ready for another spin.". Both vinyl releases are limited to a world wide pressing of just 500 copies and the "best of" contains a special bonus DVD.

Holy Water "Plaza" E.P. (un-holywater.bandcamp.com)

"Plaza" the latest offering from Leed's musician Will Shuttleworth's lo-fi/experimental project Holy Water is absolutely amazing. It opens with the epic blast know as "這裡Plaza" which harnesses some of the most intense and powerful sounds you will ever hear. It's almost like a soundtrack to a scene in a super hero film where the main character is first learning how to use his powers but instead of it being made by Marvel it's made by David Lynch. "Glory Days" is dripping with rich analog guitar textures and a bold, matter of fact style vocal delivery that I really enjoy. It's simple beat and array of subtle nuances blend well with it's captivating hooks that show off Shuttleworth's impressive song writing abilities while "Sing and Dance (while the music is being played)" is a brilliantly executed sound collage that explores high levels of experimental psychedelia. Overall "Plaza" is an elegant work of art from one the U.K.'s most inspiring up and coming composers. Highly recommended.

Night Talks "In Dreams" LP (nighttalkstheband.com)

Los Angels based alternative rock band Night Talks make quite an impact on their debut album "In Dreams". I'm immediately blown away by lead vocalist Soraya Sebghati's dynamic range as she showcases a brilliant balance of power, elegance and passion throughout the albums 11 songs. Things start off with the quick pace of "4 X 4" which is backed by the flawless rhythm section made up of bassist and drummer Josh and Cris Arteaga. The song's rich vocal melodies and shimmering guitars paint a colorful and inspiring sonic landscape. "Green" carries an atmospheric spirit as waves of pulsating synths flow alongside an intricate bassline giving it a striking cinematic glow while "Black And Blue" combines elements of post punk with lush indie pop that moves in sparkling fashion. Things slow down a bit during "Drift". It's epic mood and shuffling beat set the scene for the spectacular work of guitarist Jacob Butler as he shifts from highly textured tones and full bodied chords to blistering over driven leads. Other highlights include the hook driven sounds of "Mr Bloom", dark feel of "Glass" and cagey riff rock displayed on "Jungle". The phenomenal delivery of closing track "In Dreams" serves as a culmination of soothing sounds that leave you with a feeling of hope. An inspiring debut full of captivating songs by a band who are truly on the rise.

The Faded North S/T E.P. (thefadednorth.bandcamp.com)

Austria's The Faded North combine driving guitars with powerful melodic vocals throughout their self titled debut E.P. Opening number "Worm" captures a variety of ethereal sounds that sit nicely next to it's pounding almost frantic like ending while the hypnotic flow of "Ponytail" brings to mind the likes of Echo & The Bunnymen and The Cure. I think what's most impressive about this band is their ability to come up with innovative riffs that make you feel like your floating on air as tracks like "See You Soon" capture a desolate presence merged with lulling overtones that take you back to the days of college rock radio but with an updated modern day twist. A remarkable release for fans of eclectic, mind bending rock n roll.

Without Youth "Seasons" E.P. (withoutyouth.bandcamp.com)

Loving this new E.P. from Phoenix based indie pop outfit Without Youth. The duo's thought provoking, cinematic style moves throughout these four songs starting with the captivating presence of "Room" as it's dusky mood and swinging beat give it an infectious dose of undeniable appeal. "Take III" shares a similar pace but filters in a welcoming blast of fuzzed out guitar leads that fit perfectly alongside Liz Christy's soothing voice while the shuffling spirit that flows through "The Edge" give it all the makings of an indie pop classic. An honest, heart warming release from one of the most intriguing new duo's to come along in years.

"Five For Friday" wth Doug Gillard of Guided By Voices and Nada Surf

Doug Gillard is one of the most notable guitarists and songwriters of the American underground rock scene of the last 30 years. From his work with Death of Samantha, Cobra Verde, Guided By Voices and Nada Surf along with a stellar collection of solo releases he's assembled a truly remarkable discography. Gillard shares some of his favorite songs in this weeks edition of "Five For Friday". You can catch Guided By Voices tonight in Philly at Underground Arts and New Years Eve at The Music Hall Of Williamsburg in Brooklyn.

Sundowners - Blue Green Eyes

Upstate NY band who toured with The Monkees and Hendrix in the late 60s, the Sundowners released the semi-psychedelic album Captain Nemo in 1968, chock full of songs with odd & amazing chord progressions that still manage to sound pop with great melodies & soaring vocals.

Herman's Hermits - No Milk Today

I've loved this song for ages, but recently heard an interview with Graham Gouldman, where he explains how he married separate song ideas together for this song and also "For Your Love". The way he juxtaposes majors & minors here (and in the Hollies' "Bus Stop") has long held an appeal and something i try to keep in mind when writing.

William "Billy" Lyall - Supertrader

Lyall was the keyboardist & cowriter in Scottish pop band Pilot. He recorded one solo LP in 1976, sadly passing away in 1989. Was torn between putting up this song or the wonderfully strange "Maniac" from the same album. Pilot guitarist Ian Bairnson is featured here, and that's Phil Collins on drums.

Echo and the Bunnymen - All That Jazz

One of the great cuts from one of the greatest debut albums.

Ricky Nelson - Hello Mary Lou

Features a favorite solo from James Burton.

"Five For Friday" with Norwich UK musician Edward Jakenssen

Edward Jakenssen is a singer songwriter based in Norwich England. His brand of lo-fi garage rock n roll brings to mind the likes of Guided By Voices, The Replacements and early Lemonheads. Edward has selected some of his all time favorite tracks for this weeks edition of "Five For Friday" but first have a listen to his latest single "Teleor"

R.E.M - Imitation of Life

This is the first song I ever loved. I was five years old, and it was on the radio all the time. I walked in to a record shop just after closing time with my dad, who told the store clerk I really loved them. He (unsurprisingly) thought my dad was using me as an excuse to get the album for himself, so he turned and asked me "If R.E.M really are your favorite band, what is the name of the lead singer?" to which I replied "Michael Stipe, and he's the BEST SINGER IN THE WORLD!". Fast forward fourteen years, and I still have their entire discography on my phone, which I still play frequently. This was the song that made me fall in love with music.

Green Day - Westbound Sign

Green Day where the next band I fell in love with after R.E.M when I was about eight years old. However, in typical Eddy Jakenssen fashion, my favorite track by them was never going to be "American Idiot" or anything anyone had ever heard of! This track is probably one of their least well know, but I just love the sound of it, and though I had many favorites, this one, for me, just seemed to be a cut above the rest. I have since moved on musically from Green Day, but the reason I loved them so much was their frequent use of relative minor chord progressions. They also taught me to favor great songwriting over great production and complexity.

Guided by Voices - Game of Pricks (Alien Lanes Version)

The most recent addition to my list of all-time favorite songs, by the band that inspired me to write Teleor. Lo-Fi is where it's at right now for me, and even though I have been listening to GBV on and off for the last three years, I can never remember hearing "Game of Pricks" (If I did then it must have been the "Tigerbomb EP" version). The "Alien Lanes" version of this track is slower, a semi-tone higher, and has no unnecessary intro that adds absolutely nothing to the song ( I do realize that none of this was GBV's call). It's a minute and a half long track, and when I first heard it a couple of months ago, I had it on repeat for three hours. Robert Pollard is my songwriting hero. He was once asked "I heard you can go to the bathroom and come out having written five songs, is that true?" His reply? "Yes, but only three of them are good!".

Sahara Hotnights - Only The Fakes Survive

My favorite song by my favorite band. I haven't stopped listening to them on a daily basis since I discovered them.. I was clearing out my Youtube favorites early last year, when I found a song called "Alright Alright" by a Band Called "Sahara Hotnights". To this day I still have no idea how it got there (but I'm glad it did) I then decided to work through their discography, and when this song came on I couldn't believe my ears. I've listened to it thousands of times, and it's still just as good as the first time I heard it. Fast forward a year, and I own almost their entire discography, (including rare singles and EP's) as I sit here, waiting for them to re-appear in the music world.

Everclear - The Swing

My favorite track of all time. Everything about it is just fantastic, and I guarantee you can listen to it a hundred times and you will still be hearing things in it you'd never noticed. This track isn't a single, nor was it ever featured on an album. The only place it can be found is in the Soundtrack for the movie "Scream 2". After hearing this Everclear soon became my favorite band, (and continued to be for another four years until I discovered the Hotnights). The words in this song also mean a lot to me. Being a teenager, whenever a girl "broke my heart" I always used to lock myself in the bathroom, and "Shave my skin to show a brand new face" as if it were a ritual. For me it's a song that suits any mood, and it contains what I like to describe as probably the best three-chord opening arpeggio my ears have ever had the pleasure of hearing.

"Five For Friday" with Jim Mendola of King Everything

Jim Mendola is the master mind behind Power Pop sensations King Everything. Based in Lockport New York Mendola has released a massive catalog of impressive rock n roll gems which you can explore at (kingeverything.bandcamp.com). Jim has picked a fine collection of tracks for this weeks "Five For Friday" feature but first enjoy his song "The Last Day Of Pumping".

Butterglory “Skills of the Star Pilot”

This song will always make me happy. I want to know the star pilot. Finds his way through a crowd of female admirers to call his wife. A song about a respectable guy! Love it.

Salako “Do It Yourself”

An absolutely perfect song. I’m so happy to see it on YouTube finally. We’ve all felt what this guy’s feeling. When the help you’re getting is worse than no help at all. The production is perfect too. He’s on the phone for the first verse, sound effects while they work. Love everything about it.

Swag “Near-Perfect Smile”

I wonder if Paul McCartney has heard this song. It should make him proud. The harmonica takes it to another planet. All in under two minutes. Find a flaw. I dare you.

Papas Fritas “Live by the Water”

The rhythm does something weird. Something I am always mesmerized by. So does the melody. But it’s the lyrics that get me. Simple. Perfect. I don’t think I’d want to live by the water, but certainly away from the city.

Bill Fox “I May Never Know”

A perfect song from a perfect songwriter. He disappeared from the world for a decade, then resurfaced to play a few shows. One in my hometown. I went alone to the show after playing in a poker tournament. The place was empty. Maybe I was early, maybe I was late. I approached a couple in the back of the club to ask if Bill Fox had performed yet. He had. Ends up, this was not a “couple.” It was a fan talking to Bill Fox. Oops. I had no idea what he looked like. I got in touch with the girl later and she sent me a copy of the demo CD that he had given to her. Pretty awesome.
