Daniel Wade Monaghan "The Escapist. The Witch. The Dreamer" E.P. (octobersunn.bandcamp.com)

Tupelo, Mississippi's Daniel Wade Monaghan offers up an incredible new three song E.P. made up of dark, hypnotic songs that carry a cagey left of center stance. "The Escapist" is a guitar driven piece that's backed by pounding and at times tribal like drums that eventually give way to a more soundscape type feel that accompanies it's overall rock n roll presence well. Monaghan's vocals have a comforting yet haunting appeal to them that really gives the track a unique presence. "The Witch" has an even more sinister element to it that also delves into more shoegaze like territory which I really enjoy while "The Dreamer" might be the most intense track of the three as it's dark guitar riffs and dirge like rhythm offer the perfect balance between heavy and abstract. Highly recommended.

Evening Gown "Lakes Of Harmony" LP (eveninggown.bandcamp.com)

EPIC is the first word I'll use to describe this Berlin based duo's debut album "Lakes Of Harmony". There's a lot of Phil Spector style production and song structures here mixed with Cocteau Twins like ambiance, and it's the perfect combination. There are also some really rugged, dirge driven rhythms that loom underneath everything and give the songs a nice dose of grit. "Surprisingly" has a blissful glow to it that's like a light coming out of the shadows of an eerie landscape. "Mother's Womb" has a more hypnotic feel to it as it's shuffling beat and psychedelic tones make for a very colorful mix while "Spyglass" and "Karkunka" offer even more mind bending aspects to the record. Overall "Lakes Of Harmony" is an incredible debut sure to appeal to fans of dark, experimental sounds with a focus on songwriting. Excited to hear what this duo does next.

Netherlands "Black Gia" LP (www.thenetherlands1.bandcamp.com)

GOOD LORD. This album is truly devastating. Timo Ellis and company never let up through these 11 songs.This is stacked with riff after riff after riff that are sure to floor you. -Ton is the musical equivalent of being hit by a bulldozer if you were on a mixture of steroids, acid and speed as the song literally runs you over but in an amazingly colorful and artistic way as apposed to just sheer brutality. Tracks like "FANGORN" really let loose with some of the most insane song structures you will hear anywhere and I must add the drumming on this piece is off the charts. Title track "Black Gaia" carries a meditative stance that's both intriguing and intense as it builds and builds into an ambient flourish of percussion and drones before lulling back into hypnotic regions. Hands down one of my favorite records of the year.

Piramides "Desprender" LP (piramidespiramides.bandcamp.com)

Based in Santiago, Chile, Piramides deliver yet another beautifully well produced album, that's full of rich atmospheric tones and blissful soundscapes. Songs like "Caíste al Suelo", "Vicoria' and "Rastros" show off the bands incredible songwriting abilities and refined musicianship. These pieces are filled with catchy hooks and uplifting dynamics that make them all come off like individual anthems tied together in one album. "Refugio" is another stand out track that glides along with it's chiming guitars and infectious beat. It takes you through multiple moods and shows off a little more of the bands experimental side while the crawling pace of "León" adds a blast of intensity to everything that closes out the album in grand fashion. I really can't say enough great things about this record. Do yourself a favor and GET INTO IT.

Star Horse "Albatross" single (starhorse.bandcamp.com)

I can't get enough of this truly delightful new single from Swedish indie pop/shoegaze unit Star Horse. Maja's breathtakingly beautiful vocals mesh well with the bright atmospheric guitar tones and spot on rhythm section. The song has an angular, cinematic presence that makes you feel like you are floating in space with no return in site. Uplifting, comforting and warm. I can't wait to hear the bands new album "You Said Forever" which will be released February 15th via Startracks.

The Veins S/T E.P. (theveins.bandcamp.com)

From the opening guitar chord of "Harrowing" I was instantly hooked on this new E.P. from Australia's The Veins. It's "Mary Chain" like stance and undeniable swagger give it one of the coolest vibes you could ever ask for. After the lulling tones of "Swimming Pool Interlude" things give way to the infectious number know as "Razorblade Blues". It's reverb drenched vocals and distorted bass line are nothing less than perfect while the wavering shoegaze driven "Rockabye" is full of catchy hooks and subliminal nuances that make it anotehr top notch number from this ultra impressive release.

Bokonon "Atlast" E.P. (bokononband.bandcamp.com)

Los Angeles based Bokonon make swagger filled hypnotic rock n roll that's down right infectious. From the first notes of "Wayside" you can tell you are in for a wild ride as the music seems to levitate and glow as it pumps through your speakers. The cinematic tones of "Anomaly" have an undeniable haunting feel to that make the track perfect for late night drives down an open highway. The melodic, mysterious flair of "Fade" makes it one of the E.P.'s standout tracks while the rolling bass lines and pin point drumming that flow throughout "Voices" and "Relapse" sound absolutely stellar. Another thing I have to say about this record is just how well recorded it is as the production really captures all of the magic, power and underlying nuances that make this band great in the best way possible. A++++.

Calvin Heights "Talented Sun" E.P. (calvinheights.bandcamp.com)

Made up of Minneapolis musicians Brett Carey and Jordan Wipf, Calvin Heights new album "Talented Sun" is one of the best and most complete albums I've heard in a long long time. Many times a reader will see a review of a record that's talked about in a really positive way and ask the question "Is it really as good as this person says it is" and the answer is YES. The songs are so well crafted and so well produced to the most minor detail it's fascinating. Beginning with the psychedelic fueled "Man Of Your Dreams" the duo channel what sounds like haunting spirits throughout the track as it's hypnotic bass line and matter of fact vocal delivery draw you into an otherworldly experience. "Clouds" incorporates aspects of shoegaze along with indie folk to create a beautiful blend of sounds that are blissful and lush. The song is also full of toe tapping hooks that make it stand out even more before the track dives into a wash of ominous sounds leading to the tripped out darkness of "Seasons Change". "Wasted Sun" is a delightful track with a light pop sensibility that wouldn't sound out of place on something like The Beatles "White Album" while the percussive guitar tones of "Cold As Your Flowers" really adds a cool aspect to things. There's an evil, tense style attached to " Era Vernacular" that showcases some much appreciated "tension" in the album. It's simple riffs are played out in such a way that it really makes you feel like the moment in a horror film where something crazy is going to happen. This gives way to the uplifting spirit of "When You Think Of Me" which radiates with elegance and beauty. It's powerful chord structure and soothing vocals really make it an amazing song. In the end what you have is a landmark album that showcases a band at the top of their game. This is a complete album that's focused and even though it's got all kinds of different moods and sounds going on it really works as one piece and gives the listener a full album experience as the songs really gel together in the most perfect cohesive way. Do yourself a favor and take the time to immerse yourself in this truly amazing listening experience.

Girl Werewolf "Classical Exorcisms" E.P. (girlwerewolf.bandcamp.com)

Raleigh, North Carolina's Girl Werewolf blast through six tracks of high energy, high grit, riff driven rock n roll. Opening number "Burning Knee" is full of high gain, distorted guitars, galloping drums and a gruff yet soulful vocal stance. "Kobald" has more of a garage rock feel that's backed by a rich psychedelic groove, while "Null Elemental" adds in a twist of sludge like, sonic doom. The menace continues with the absolutely relentless "Tasty Rigor". It literally sounds like the vocals are ripping out of the speakers and coming to attack you. Next thing you know the band switch gears into the surf/garage rock feel of "Covenold" before slamming the door shut on this E.P. with the spacey psychedelic sounds of "Morlock". Overall this is a pretty spectacular collection of heavy sounds with some 60's garage rock tones thrown in for good measure. It's dark, it's aggressive and intense and comes highly recommended.

Of Two Minds S/T E.P. (oftwomindsband.bandcamp.com)

Loving this debut four song E.P. from Of Two Minds out of Columbus Ohio. The record is full of insane "chops" as these guys really shine out with top levels of musicianship from beginning to end. "Never Went" starts things off with it's insane drumming attack and jazz like guitar and bass structures. It literally keeps you guessing as to what will come next as this track has multiple moods and modes that jump at you out of nowhere. "Snowset" has a few more pop elements to it that give it a nice catchy feel that reminds me a little of Minus The Bear while "Paint By Numbers" brings elements of angst and grit to the mix and gives even more diversity to the bands sound. Everything winds down with the sonic array known as "Sunny Duality". It's like a complete collection of all of the bands best aspects rolled into one as it really shows off just how brilliant this group is. I really can't say enough great things about this record and I can't wait to hear more from this amazing new band.

Slemenda "Eyelids" E.P. (slemenda.bandcamp.com)

Based in Portland, Slemenda have just released one of the most impressive ambient/experimental E.P.'s I've heard in quite some time. Starting out with a lulling four minute intro things quickly move into the deep, rich cosmic tones of the E.P.'s title track. It sounds like a space explorer who has just reached a new undiscovered planet and is floating elegantly over top of it's atmosphere. "Dreamer" has a more hypnotic effect and brings in layers of whispering voices, peaceful yet metallic sounds and an array of subliminal tones that are inspiring, introspective and warm.This brings us to the dream like presence of "Reprise" which is a hazy mix of low frequencies, distant ghost like melodies and underlying voices that eventually give way to the errie "Outro" that sends this record off in fine form. A truly remarkable achievement.

Tiny City "Tiny City" E.P. (tinycitymusic.bandcamp.com)

Charlotte North Carolina's Tiny City blast through this hard hitting four song E.P. of no frills rock n roll songs with authority. You will hear elements of Big Star, The Replacements and Wilco here as there's also an underlying country/folk feel to much of these songs. "Oh My" is impactful and to the point and has a fun rock n roll shuffle to it. I could see this song being a good fit for Stiff Records back in the late 70's. "Cinnamon" has all of the aspects of an anthem as it's energetic chorus and infectious guitar leads are simply second to none. "Vision Is Real" and "Tiny City" have a very distinct 80's feel to them that also echoes the spirit of classic Roxy Music. Overall a very refreshing release that's as hard hitting and relentless as it is catchy. Get into it.

"Teenage Dream" an interview with Martin Ejlertsen of Black Light White Light

Black Light White Light is a psych rock band based in Malmo, Sweden centered around founder Martin Ejlertsen on vocals and guitar. Their latest album "Horizons" is a fascinating journey of colorful, atmospheric, psychedelic pop. We sat down with Martin to talk about his first musical memories, the making of the album and the current music scene in Sweden. "Horizons" is available now on Cassette and CD from Custom Made Music.

CMM-What's your first musical memory and what's the first music you heard that made a major impact on you?

Martin-My first musical memory that really made an impact must be the Muppet Show. Seeing this comedy-variety serial TV-show and discovering the great songs from the show on LP on my parents stereo with a big pair of all too big headphones lying on the carpet while imagining all these wonderfully strange muppet characters in my mind made an everlasting impression.

CMM-When did Black Light White Light start and what was the inspiration for the musical direction you went in?

Martin-Black Light White Light startet in 2009 when I i decided I was done playing cinematic post-rock and wanted to go back rediscovering more traditional songwriting very much inspired by the 2000s new wave of US rock and roll and shoegazer bands like the White Stripes, BRMC and Yeah Yeah Yeahs. I decided to start my own musical project grounded on trying to create great melodies and melodic songs but with an edge to them. Constantly working with a kind of duality in both the music and the lyrics. This is not so much of a concept as it just came so naturally to me from the very start. I wanted the band name to reflect this too.

CMM-How has the band evolved over the years as far as line ups and directions in style?

MArtin-The band has gone from being a bit more garage rock and roll in the beginning which you can hear on our first EP, then getting a more desert rock kind of US sound on the first two albums - both recorded with US producers - to now getting a more British attitude and experimental expression on the the album Horizons.

CMM-Your new album "Horizons" just came out. What was the writing and recording process for the album like?

Martin-While both Infrared Daylight and Gold Into Dreams were mostly recorded live as a band in the studio over around a week with some days of over dubing afterwards the approach on Horizons has been very different. I started working with a new upcoming and very talented Danish producer. Only him, me and a new Swedish drummer went into the studio working on ideas and sketches for 5 new songs not really knowing exactly how they should sound. We worked through several sessions on these songs before coming to a conclusion using them as a foundation for the whole album. This time we really used the studio as an active member of the band creating the songs and sounds as the ideas popped up while recording together. Very time consuming but also very very interesting and rewarding.

CMM-Any particular gear you all used in the making of it. (Guitars, pedals, amps etc)

Martin-I have quite a few pedals and used most of them. But the trick this time was really that nothing wasn't allowed. We'd try to come up with crazy ideas. Making the guitar sound like a synth or vice versa. Many times we would plug the guitar directly into the mixer in the studio from the guitar pedals and tweak sounds around. You'll really get a whole new world of sounds by skipping the amp. Which to me earlier was not really an option I had worked with. So Fuzz Face, Warped Vinyl Analog Vibrato and Boss Giga Dealy were probably the main pedals used on the new album.

CMM-If you could score a soundtrack for any film director who would it be and what would the film be about?

Martin-Then I would aim high and work with Guillermo del Toro infusing visual and poetic beauty, and elements of horror and fairy tales into the narrative of Tom Wolfe's 'The Electric Kool Aid Acid Test' but even implementing and capturing the strange times and mythical 60's and Summer of Love.

CMM-What's the scene like in your part of Europe? Any bands or venues worth mentioning?

Martin-There is such a musical talent in Sweden, probably more than ever before in history, but so little will, investments and visions to support it. The radio stations are very focused on playing mostly big international and national pop names and that's what the main public is therefor also into. Going out hearing new bands playing live is not something most young people today really seem to do or are interested in unless it's a big or very hyped act. That's hurting the venues making it harder for new bands getting gigs. Many new, national and very talented bands are therefor focused on trying to get big internationally before establishing themselves nationally. We have great venues but mostly bigger and it's making it hard getting a slot unless you are a big act. With all that talent I don't understand why the Danish government won't invest more in developing local musical talent that can be exported big time. This is what Sweden has done with great success for many years. Some of the newer Danish and Swedish acts I like are Palace Winter, Cancer, Masasolo, Amason, HOLY, Tussilago. I miss The Soundtrack Of Our Lives. But hey, I tend to be nostalgic.

"Love Notes", An Interview with Whisper Suite

Whisper Suite is a husband/wife duo comprised of Nathaniel Sutton and Guylaine Sutton from Edmonton, Alberta Canada. Together, they bring a distinct style of sound, influenced by Sigur Ros, This Beautiful Mess, and This Will Destroy You. Nathaniel is an award-winning songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist, while his wife, Guylaine, is talented vocalist / percussionist.

During the glory days of Myspace in 2006, Guylaine was sifting through multiple artists in search of new music to add to her digital repertoire and eventually discovered a singer/songwriter by the name of Nathaniel Sutton. He was local and she was enticed by his sound, Guylaine decided to message him privately and declare her love for his music. It wasn’t long after, they had met for the first time in person and grew a relationship which inevitably led to the couple declaring love for each other in marriage on April 12th, 2008.

Since their beginning, they’ve experimented with playing music together and Whisper Suite is the structured outcome. You’ll become entranced by dreamy guitars filled with reverberation, harmonic vocals and a perfect blend of cinematic instrumentals. The debut full-length release,“Love Notes”, is written from experiences shared between the couple, each song expresses a story.

We sat down with Nathaniel to talk about what inspires the duo to make music, the recording and writing process for the album, their favorite film directors and the music scene in Edmonton. CMM-What's your first musical memory and what's the first music you heard that made a major impact on you?

We've always shared similar taste in music and when we first met, we compared CD's, one of our favourite album's was "Little Songs" by David Usher. We were/are specifically fond of his song "St Lawrence River" and we were luckily able to see him perform that song live in our hometown. It was a very special night to us and encouraged us to create music together.

CMM-When did The Whisper Suite start and what was the inspiration for the musical direction you went in?

Whisper Suite has been just over a year in the making, we began writing in early 2017, taking inspiration from amazing artists such as This Beautiful Mess, Six Parts Seven and Sigur Ros.

CMM-How did you all come up with the name?

When we were thinking of names to call our project, the phrase "Whisper Sweet Nothing" came into the conversation. As we discussed further, we replaced sweet with a homonym and "Whisper Suite" was born.

CMM-What was the writing and recording process for the album like?

All the music for each track was written and recorded first. The lyrics and vocal melodies were written secondly to capture the mood of the overall vibe of each track. It was all recorded and mastered on our own at our home studio here in Edmonton, Alberta Canada. We were content with being able to write and record at our leisure, the creative process was a smooth process.

CMM-Any particular gear you all used in the making of it. (Guitars, pedals, amps etc)

The majority of the music was composed digitally, using the program Reason. It was used to record drums, guitar and synthesizer. We used the midi-based guitar, Jamstik to record the electric and acoustic guitar sounds. We used a Dean Custom Zone 4-string guitar for bass and used a Rode NT1-A to record the vocals.

CMM-If you could score a soundtrack for any film director who would it be and what would the film be about?

Blade Runner & Blade Runner 2049 contain such epic compositions and would absolutely love to score music for the series, our instrumental track "Tough Love" is influenced by Blade Runner. In regards to your question, Ridley Scott or Denis Villeneuve would be the selected film directors. Our music seems to stand closer to the darker / moody side of the spectrum so a drama film would work best for us.

CMM-What's the scene like in your part of Canada? Any bands worth mentioning?

Our scene is a lively one, we are fortunate to have so many talented acts in our music community. Acts such as The Wet Secrets, Nuela Charles and Jay Gilday - just to name a few.

CMM-What direction do you see the next recordings moving in and what do you have planned for the months to come?

Our debut album "Love Notes" contains the distinct sound of Whisper Suite and we will continue to carry that sound forward in recordings to come. It's a sound where light meets dark, happy meets heartbreak. In the months to come, we are working with Custom Made Music to release our material physically on compact discs and digitally through Triple Pop Records. In addition, we will be performing at Weayaya Solar Powered Music Festival on July 7th, 2018.

Twilight Fields release a stunning new video clip for their latest single "Waiting"

Twilight Fields mastermind Allister Thompson has released an amazing video for his song "Waiting". It's off the new Twilight Fields album "Our Time Is Now" and it's captivating visuals are as mind bending as they are comforting.

Reflecting on the track and the video Thompson said... "I don't usually write uptempo or midtempo music...it just doesn't happen. However, one morning I was dozing and the whole thing, even elements of the production, sort of came to me while snoozing. This whole new wave John Foxx-era Ultravox sort of thing. I decided it was worth pursuing, since I was working on the new set of songs at that time. I wanted something suitably romantic for the lyrics, so I went with a classic 'it's hard to find love in the city' theme, the sad irony of being stuck in millions of people but unable to find someone you can have a real relationship with. The video was created for me by a friend who is actually a popular Canadian crime fiction writer, R.M. Greenaway. We've worked together before in my day job editing books. She had this footage of heavy pedestrian street traffic that she layered and blended for a sort of ghostly effect that I think helps to convey the theme very well."

Based in Chile, Seatemples create an astonishingly beautiful mix of shoegaze, post punk and psychedelic sounds on their latest release "Down Memory Lane" which will be released on cassette later this month on CMM. The band consists of Patricio Zenteno (aka Patricio Temples) on vocals, guitar and programming, Priscila Ugalde on vocals and bass, Moisés Segovia on synth and vocals and Diego Herrera on drums. SAM ELLIOT STARS IN "THE HERO".

Here at CMM we love all things Sam Elliot. From his role as legendary bouncer Wade Garret in Roadhouse to playing "The Stranger" in The Big Lebowski it's always inspiring to hear Sam's trademark voice and see his "salty" smile. In "The Hero" Elliot plays Lee Hayden,an aging Western icon with a golden voice who's best performances are decades behind him. The film also stars Laura Prepon (That 70's Show/Oranage Is The New Black), Krysten Ritter (Breaking Bad/Veronica Mars), Nick Offerman (Parks And Recreation), and Katharine Ross (The Stepford Wives). The film had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival back on January 21st and will open in theaters on June 9th.

KYLE CRAFT COVERS LEONARD COHEN

Last year I fell in love with Kyle Craft's debut album "Dolls Of Highland". This week Craft released this impressive rendition of the late great Leonard Cohen's classic "Chelsea Hotel #2". Reflecting on the track Craft stated. “Chelsea Hotel #2, the way Cohen delivers it, it’s through a window into another time and the further we get into this thing, the future, the more I feel like a stranger. When he died, I felt very alone…as I’m sure many people did. The song is for him, for Patti Smith, for Dylan…for everyone who inspired me to write and for a time and place that seems so foreign now.” Craft plays the Mercury Lounge in NYC on May 15th and continues to work on his next full length due out in 2018.

Digression Buff "Perspective" Single (digressionbuff.bandcamp.com)

Digression Buff have quickly become one of my favorite new artists. Headed by Australian musician Nick McMillan this brand new single begins with a wash of synths and heavy atmospherics before launching into an infectious rhythm full of rich melodies that's matched with a soothing vocal delivery. It's soundtrack like dynamics and underlying nuances add even more appeal to the track which also drifts into a warm breezy direction at times. Overall this is some of McMillan's best work yet and I can't wait to hear what he comes up with next. Stay tuned for more music from this one of a kind project that is truly on the rise.

"Lights Flickr", the latest single from Germany krautrock band faUSt is down right psychotic sounding. The track is from their brand new album "Fresh Air" and it features the lyrics "Lights Flickr as I blink my eyes to the beat to the beat to the beat" as a frantic saxophone and sea of feedback blast over top of a thunderous beat. Matthew Sweet is back with a brand new album "Tomorrow Forever". Lead single "Trick" has all the key ingredients that make up an amazing Matthew Sweet song. Catchy hooks, melodic guitars and Sweet's signature vocal delivery. The song emits a glowing feeling that's absolutely perfect for spring time. The 17 track album available June 16th also features guest appearances from Gary Louris of The Jayhawks and Debbie Peterson of The Bangels. PJ Harvey quickly follows up her latest album "The Hope Six Demolition Project" with this stunning double A-side 7" single. The atmospheric stance and inspiring drumming that moves throughout "A Dog Called Money" paints a breathtakingly beautiful scene. Harvey's voice harnesses a sense of urgency and emotion that works perfectly with the orchestral like waves that move around you and draw you in with their other worldly presence. The acoustic based "I'll Be Waiting" is written from the perspective of a child who's entire homeland has been destroyed by war. It's haunting lyrics and stripped down feel are matched by an intensity and passion like no other. The tracks are available as a 7" single that's limited to 1,000 copies and available exclusively during her current U.S. tour which runs through July 21st.

Solid Hex "PSA" E.P. (solidhex.bandcamp.com)

I'm blown away by this new E.P. from Nashville based garage rock unit Solid Hex. Led by the raspy vocals and fuzzed out guitars of Anna Wise "PSA" is full of top notch riffs and instantly memorable melodies that also feature contributions from Wise brother Rick on bass and drums. From the first chords of "When The Blood Hits The Ceiling" you know you are in for something special as it balances an uplifting feel with tons of welcomed grit and grime. "Evil Eye" has more of a subliminal groove to it that's highlighted by a menacing guitar tone and a well executed chorus while "PSA" shows off more of the bands jangling indie pop side. Things wind down with a cover of The Who's "Eminem's Front" as the duo put their own healthy spin on the classic rock staple. Simply put this is an incredible E.P. you should be checking out right now!!!

The Psychotic Monks "Silence Slowly and Madly Shines LP "

Paris based rock n roll machine The Psychotic Monks go ballistic on their crushing new album "Silence Slowly and Madly Shines". The menacing crawl of opening track "It's Gone" bursts into a collection of smashing fuzzed out guitar riffs and pounding drums that harness some of the most rugged energy I've heard in some time. "Wanna Be Damned (Punk Song)" is equally as dangerous, with it's cagey beat and bass line and relentless swagger while things slow down to a more doom like crawl on the heavy psych numbers "Sink" and "When I Feel". My personal favorite track "The Bad And The City Solution" makes great use of BIG dynamics and thunderous percussion to give it one of the best grooves you will hear anywhere. I also really enjoy the ambient, psychedelic interludes that move between songs at various points on the record. They carry a lulling feel that makes the heavier and more energetic parts of the record sound even more dramatic. The album closes out with the lush and stunningly colorful "Walk By The Wild Lands". It's a fitting ending to what is so far, one of the best albums of the year. Beautiful, relentless and psychologically challenging.

Australian ambient/experimental indie project Black Lining return with this blissful new single "The Lake" (After Dark). It's got a sleepy laid back appeal to it that is highlighted by the combination of a bright captivating guitar sound and rugged bottomless bassline. Together they ring out in a calming peaceful manner. It's straight forward beat works well alongside Black Lining founder Nicholas McMillan's straight forward lyrics and charming falsetto style vocal stance. This track is the type that makes the most out of each and every note by stretching the boundaries of a simple song structure as far as it can go. The result is a beautiful, soundtrack style performance that harnesses what the spirit of art, beauty and creativity are all about.

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah "Down" Single (Clap Your Hands Say Yeah Inc)

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah mastermind Alec Ounsworth is back with a new album titled "The Tourist". This is the first release since the departure of original drummer Sean Greenhalgh leaving Ounsworth at the helm to perform everything on the record himself. Lead single "Down" has a quirky, jerky base to it that eventually gives way to a driving beat and some searing guitar work as Ounsworth's fast paced and at time frantic yet soothing and psychedelic voice is incredibly enlightening. The song explores a wide range of tempos and sections that really mix things up and show alternating moods that also fall nicely together under one cosmic umbrella. It's futuristic, it's innovative and it's damn fine sounding. Can't wait to take in the entire release. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah are currently on a U.S. tour that runs through May 6th.

Mariana Rivals "Take / Chroma" E.P. (marianarivals.bandcamp.com)

California based synth pop unit Mariana Rivals deliver a pair of new tracks that are absolutely delightful. A wash of shimmering synths ring throughout the heavy groove based feel of "Take". It's pumping bassline and laid back rhythm are simply second to none while the mysterious yet soulful vocals put everything over the top and get you singing along in no time. "Chroma" is a bit darker and more subliminal. It's got a heavy feel to it that builds throughout and keeps you guessing at what will come next as it's cunning dynamics and atmospheric presence is as beautiful as it is enlightening. There's also an underlying orchestral element to it all that I enjoy very much. A captivating pair of songs that could easily serve as the soundtrack to a universe trillions of light years away.

Minus The Bear "Invisible" Single (Suicide Squeeze)

"Invisible", the lead single from Minus The Bear's new album "VOIDS" is nothing short of an anthem. Frontman Jake Snider's uplifting lyrics and energetic vocal cadence paired with the songs dynamic structure are sure to satisfy fans both old and new. "VOIDS" is the first record with new drummer Kiefer Matthias and he delivers big here as his tight, in the pocket playing gels well with guitarist Dave Knudson's unmistakable style and bassist Cory Murchy's thunderous tone. Hailing from Lausanne, Switzerland Telespace impress on this unbelievably charismatic Double A Side single. The band quickly create an ethereal world through the cinematic sounds of "A Click Away" as it's calming dose of mind numbing guitars are soon followed by an intriguing left of center style vocal delivery. It's subtle rhythm and rolling bassline accompany the track in fine form as this introspective piece glides through a vibrant realm of colorful sonic landscapes. The driving beat and chiming guitars of "Sexual Tension" provide the perfect backdrop for this undeniably infectious number. It's deceptive hooks and flavorful melodies give the track a shimmering flair that channels a theatrical spirit full of enlightening undertones that at times echo the spirit of classic Bowie. A spectacular pair of songs packaged in a delightful gatefold 7" sleeve available now from the bands bandcamp page. I can't wait to hear what comes next from this amazing indie psych outfit.

What else can I say? This is classic Thurston Moore. Left of center guitar driven rock n roll at it's best. Backed by the incredible beat of guest drummer Jem Doulton along with guitarist Ames Sedwards and bassist Deb Googe "Cease Fire" is an incredibly contagious song full of intricate riffs and gliding angular textures. The track is a reaction to the horrors of gun violence that continues to plague our world. Moore recently stated...“Guns are designed to kill and we, as non-violent human beings, are against the killing of any person or animal.The song is also about the power of love, in all its freedom of choice. A power that no gun can extinguish as love will rule always. Melt down your guns and kiss your neighbor.” SPREAD THE LOVE!!!

Black Lining "Creed Dealer Sessions" E.P. (blacklining.bandcamp.com)

Headed by Brisbane, Australia based musician Nicholas McMillan, Black Lining create a whirlwind of atmospheric tones on their latest release "Creed Dealer Sessions". Opening cut "Maria's Dog" is a well crafted sound collage built from a wash of manipulated guitar notes that are lulling and frantic at the same time. Things get even more cinematic on "Calamari In The Tray Of The Ute" as it's fluttering drone like presence makes it a truly beautiful work of art while the cathartic spirit showcased on "Shouting To Let The Tension Out" makes it the most experimental track of the bunch. The warbling structure of "Zachary Michael Degnan (Doesn't Know How To Whistle)" gives an absolutely brilliant ending to a wonderfully executed and truly stellar release. I can't wait to hear what McMillan comes up with next.

Droneyard "Devolver" LP (droneyard.bandcamp.com)

Whoa. San Francisco's Droneyard have released one hell of a debut album. "Devolver" is made up of 13 melodic rock n roll numbers that channel the spirits of The Beatles, Weezer, The Who and Cheap Trick but it's also much more than that as the band really have carved out their own brand of stripped down rock n roll. "Press Rewind" builds off of brilliant guitar and vocal melodies that are backed by an in the pocket rhythm section that works all so well as it's hook filled chorus gives off a warm hypnotic glow. The uplifting spirit of "Maybe Maybe Not" balances blistering fuzzed out power chords with a free spirited psychedelic vibe that's sure to get you singing along in no time while "Take It As You Leave" is a raw, garage rock romp full of grit and swagger. Other highlights include the melancholy "Broken As Can Be", the hook filled tones of "Zeros And Ones" and the shuffling groove of closing number "Take 9". This is one of the best straight up rock records I've heard in years. Top notch songs performed with incredible musicianship and excellent production. Highly recommended!!!

Foundling "Numbing" Single (foundling.bandcamp.com)

U.K. musician Jonathan George Fox offers up one of the most inspiring and beautifully hypnotic tracks I've heard in some time. It was actually recorded back in 2009 but just recently released. The track is made up of some brilliantly crafted guitar work that is full of deep textures, haunting drones and subtle nuances that offer a sense of comfort and peace. There's also a collection of atmospheric sounds that lull over top of everything giving it a intriguing and mysterious vibe. When reflecting on the creation of the track Fox says "Numbing was recorded in Ilfracombe in 2009 after my close family decided to relocate, for what became five years before moving on again. During this period I stayed there temporarily for a number of times using mainly an attic bedroom and the garage in the garden for recording music. Working and walking and living in this quite special north devon microclimate is somewhat sobering and substantial. Rolling green flourishing hills surrounded by brutal oceans jagged rocks and unsettled weather created a special environment for much of my work written or completed there in one way or another. Numbing was created for my mum, for meditation and healing therapy practice. A long improvisation with my guitar and various instruments I had at the time including a singing bowl and a special north American style flute I stole off my dad." "Numbing" is a must listen for fans of spaced out, experimental ambient soundscapes.

Loving the sounds on this new single from Montreal psych/surf outfit High Hills. "Dust" is a laid back mind bender that blends 60's garage rock with a modern indie style twist. The mysterious cadence and hypnotic tone of Vocalist/Guitarist Alex Fauteux is second to none as bassist Jean-Félix Lamarche and drummer Jean-Michel Cyr set a solid foundation for these psych driven anthems. B-side "Moonshine" adds a bit more menace to the mix as it's pounding rhythm and blistering leads shine throughout. An impressive blast of top of the line rock n roll sure to give you a healthy dose of psychedelic satisfaction.

The Free Radical deliver big on their debut S/T E.P. The London based band's sound falls someplace between the graceful side of My Bloody Valentine and classic Velvet Underground flair. Opening number "Orange Glow" is backed by a compelling rhythm and pulsating synth tones that compliment it's striking dynamics and atmospheric vocal delivery, while the rich melodies that flow throughout "Wings" delve deep into the other worldly realms of shoegaze. The E.P.'s third and final track "Overcome" demonstrates a fine range of shimmering hooks and brilliantly colorful textures that cap off this E.P. in fine form. A fabulous release to help kick off the new year.

Latina, Italy's The HAL Reason bring a diverse range of sounds to the plate on their self titled debut E.P. Things start off with the ethereal mood of "Timeless Journey". It's shimmering guitars and laid back rhythm set a delightful pace that meshes well with the driving tones of "Unfulfilled". Backed by a spectacular rolling bass line and a rich psychedelic vocal stance "Streets Of Berlin" shows off the bands diversity and willingness to experiment while the more melodic structure of "Rise" makes for a wonderful ending to this captivating release. Overall The HAL Reason have an inspiring sound that showcases everything that's good about cinematic, atmospheric experimental rock n roll.

Bash & Pop "Never Wanted To Know" (Advance Track) (fatpossum.com)

Tommy Stinson's recently reformed post Replacements outfit Bash & Pop unveil another track from "Anything Could Happen" the bands first album since their 1993 debut "Friday Night Is Killing Me". The no frills "Never Wanted To Know" is a high energy blast of melodic rock n roll with equally powerful production. Tommy has roped in a few of his friends who helped make much of the new Bash & Pop to hit the road with him – lead guitarist Steve “The Sleeve” Selvidge (The Hold Steady), Joe “The Kid” Sirois (Mighty Mighty BossTones) on drums and Justin “Carl” Perkins (Screeching Weasel) on bass guitar. The tour kicks off on January 12th at the legendary 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis and follow it up with a full U.S. tour that runs through March. "Anything Could Happen" will be available January 20th courtesy of Fat Possum Records.

Cave Space "Windows 1" E.P. (cavespace.bandcamp.com)

There's a glowing, radiant presence that flows throughout this debut E.P. from North Carolina's Cave Space. The project is the brainchild of guitarist Adam Blythe, who adds an array of modulation effects to his soothing soundscapes. "Nightlight" has a left of center vibe that's both welcoming and mysterious while "Grandfathered" features a lulling dose of hypnotic atmospherics that adds a post rock feel to things. It's got a sense of passion and strength that goes with it's textured tones that are simply second to none. The swelling sounds of "Parting Ways" and uplifting spirit of "Drifting" further cement "Windows 1" as a truly amazing collection of enlightening compositions. Can't wait to hear what's next for this promising new artist.

Lieberman "Evergreen" E.P. (liebermann.bandcamp.com)

Lieberman are an exciting new shoegaze fuzz/pop unit from Moscow. Their debut E.P. "Evergreen" captures their shimmering psych laced approach in fine form. The title track features a spectacular performance from vocalist Zhanna Axenova as she shows off here expansive range with elegance and grace. "Constrnt" is a bouncy upbeat number that's full of catchy hooks and vibrant guitars that are backed by a pin point rhythm section while closing track "Rat Prince (Pumpkin Face)" has a soothing ambient presence that ventures into rich psychedelic territory and emits sonic colors of shoegaze bliss. A truly delightful release from beginning to end.

Local Blood "A Lure Of Sights" E.P. (localblood.bandcamp.com)

Lithuanian Post Punk unit Local Blood impress on their debut E.P. "A Lure Of Lights" The first word that comes to mind when listening to this band is "Haunting". Each track captures a sense of danger and darkness that draws you in with it's mysterious undertones. The driving bass line and straight forward beat of "Crawling Boarders" mesh well with it's colorful guitar work and intense vocal delivery while "Past Perfect Continuous" is slower paced but equally as intense as layers of atmospheric synths add an even darker texture to the mix. The caginess only grows larger during closing piece "Total Guidance" as it's bleak, undeniably cold presence makes for a fitting end to this truly incredible release. Highly recommended.

Steve Wright "Indefinite" E.P. (stevewright.bandcamp.com)

Such an excellent E.P. from Cleveland based musician Steve Wright. Opening piece "Forever Again" is a highly melodic number backed by stand out percussion and Wright's dynamic voice. There's also a subtle heaviness to the track that brings to mind the likes of Tourche, Jesu and Sabbath. The lush, guitar riffs that ring throughout "Trillium" are really remarkable. It's a breathtakingly beautiful instrumental backed by galloping drums and a powerful dirge driven bass line. Things reach a sonic apex during the ethereal sounds of "Daffodils" as Wright showcases all of his best chops over this elegant masterpiece. A well executed debut from an inspiring new composer.

"Primed" the latest track from Melbourne Australia based artist Thinds is a 19 minute epic, full of lulling atmospherics and textured layers of intense sound experimentation. It's a cosmic, mind bending journey full of twists and turns that move between rich psychedelic landscapes and dark, futuristic drones. It's also very visually inspiring as continual listens conjure up images of futuristic planets and other worldly realms and I continue to discover something new with each and every play. Overall "Primed" is an incredibly well crafted piece of art sure to delight fans of warm therapeutic audio stimulation.

L.A. based indie/prog duo Arms That Work hit one out of the park on their latest release "Automata". Things kick off with the lively attack of "Digital Wood Block" which features some of the most manic drumming you will hear on planet earth. It's also backed by a solid dose of shimmering synths and time signatures sure to make your head spin. "Burgundy Moon Saloon" continues the math rock frenzy as it plays with even more complex structures. It's wide range of guitar tones and relentless intensity make it a lot of fun to listen to. Things get switched up a bit on "That Scam" as there's a more mysterious, almost soundtrack element to it as a layer of swirling atmospherics run throughout the track. It's infectious rhythm and lush textures culminate in a sonic blast of full on mayhem that's sure to make the ghost of Frank Zappa proud. Add in the awesome cover art courtesy of Charles Paras and you have one hell of an amazing E.P.

The delicate indie pop sound of Captions is represented in grand fashion on their debut album "Iterations". Opening piece "Bearfights" catchy vocal cadence gives it all the makings of an anthem. It's got a vibrant energy that flows with every note. The thumping bass line and in the pocket drums of "Two Step" set the tone as it's melodic guitars come off like a cross between Tommy James & The Shondells & Broken Bells, while "Palabra" is a heart warming number that moves with elegance and poise. The pace quickens during the galloping drive of "Recording Silence" which features some truly incredible vocal melodies set on top of a lush sonic landscape. "Loop" keeps things fresh with it's jangling surf guitar attack and feel good stance while the band continues to deliver with stellar tracks like "Eyes" and "It's A Riot". Overall "Iterations" is an excellent album full of cleverly crafted songs that draw you in with open arms and leaves you wanting more. Highly recommended

Hook Turns "Night Shift" (hookturns.bandcamp.com)

Hook Turns debut album "Night Shift" is a brilliant collection of indie rock bliss that draws from a heavy singer/songwriter point of view. Headed by Australian musician Andrew Bonnici,the album displays a unique brand of intensity and charm on songs like "Same Old Mess" and "Multitudes" and you really get a sense of sincerity and the experiences that went into crafting the record. "Inland Sea" has an undeniable flair that's full of catchy melodies that one could easily link to the Jesus And Mary Chain or The Smiths but with an underlying country feel, while "Las Manos" is nothing short of epic. When asked about his process for making the album,Bonnici says "Night Shift" was recorded in my country studio, an old hall in the farming town of Elmore, located 2 hours north of Melbourne Australia. The album was self produced and the recording was done in the middle of the night. I've also worked night shift for the past 12 years, so the album explores the space and time between sundown and a waking world." "Night Shift" has all the makings of a classic as the passion and fire that's projected throughout the songs are sure to win over fans from around the globe.

Matt Kelly "A Night Drive Down a Familiar Road You've Never Been Down" E.P. (kellygreenstudios.bandcamp.com)

Philadelphia based experimental musician Matt Kelly draws you into his colorful and inviting world of sound on his latest release "A Night Drive Down a Familiar Road You've Never Been Down". The title track starts out with an ambient lull that quickly builds and builds almost like it's getting closer and closer to a mysterious being of some kind. The beautiful textures Matt creates are simply second to none and it's the kind of track that will have you discovering something new about it every time you hear it. "A Picture Of A Picture" creates an ominous mood as it's massive presence offers up a tidal wave of tones and drones. It's got a hypnotic, cinematic feel to it that is simply brilliant. An inspiring release from beginning to end.

Trees, Perfectly Still "CL​/​41​/​2​/​99 " E.P. (treesperfectlystill.bandcamp.com)

Trees. Perfectly Still is the solo ambient/experimental project of Vancouver musician Isaac Jeffs. The recordings harness all kinds of sounds into collages that are at times distant and bleak yet full of peace and beauty. "The Relevance Of Opinion" features some cold piano sounds alongside a wash of grayish textures that are later joined by a sea of psychedelic like voices and blistering power electronics. "We Won't Know" presents a laid back beat and a pulsating drone that serves as a backdrop to the liquid like flow of vibrant tones that move with blissful appeal. There's also some amazing guitar sounds that really put this track over the top and give it an even more subliminal feel. The tide shifts into hypnotic territory on "Mothers Earth" as a collection of shimmering sounds swarm around a delightful array of mind bending vocals. Reflecting on the E.P. Jeffs says "The songs were almost completely recorded on a Zoom field recorder. I recorded at home, at work, on streets, on a ferry, etc. Most of the sounds featured were sounds i hear on a daily basis as well. Trying to find beauty in the awful sounds of a repeating life. the title "CL/41/2/99" are the 4 bus/train routes i take in a circle to and from work almost every day.So in full, the E.P. is about trying to live in an endless cycle without going mad I guess. And vaguely points out the madness in doing the same thing every day." "CL​/​41​/​2​/​99" is a remarkable achievement and I look forward to hearing more of Isaac's beautiful work for years to come.

Triko "Atina Bojadži" LP (trikoo.bandcamp.com)

"Atina Bojadži", the debut album from Belgrade, Serbia's Triko is one of the most inspiring albums you will hear all year. The band have a knack for delivering atmospheric guitar driven songs full of rich vocal melodies and catchy hooks. "Kontrolni" with it's intricate riffs and pin point rhythm section sets the pace for other uplifting numbers like "Triko" and "Mali Odmor". There's a feeling of hope that moves with each of these tracks that can't be ignored. The band feed off of each other well and you can tell they love playing together. Stand out number "Kosmoza" channels a bit of Sonic Youth and Yo La Tengo with it's ethereal stance and radiant energy while the more abrasive "Tremolo" adds a nice bit of angst to the mix. All of the songs show off their own unique personality in a big way. Simply put, "Atina Bojadži" is a very promising debut from one of my favorite new bands.
