Six Records CMM Wants You To Know

Aura Blaze "Sweet Talkin' Woman" (ELO Cover) (aurablaze.bandcamp.com)

I've been hooked on Aura Blaze since I heard their debut single "A Glass Of Tears Half Empty" back in 2014 and was blown away by their self titled debut album which gives serious references to The Beatles, The Beach Boys and ELO so it's fitting they would offer up this stellar rendition of the ELO classic "Sweet Talkin Woman". It stays pretty close to the style of the original while adding a few personal twists and turns to the mix. I gotta say I love it and am also happy to hear there is new Aura Blaze material is in the works. Can't wait for their next album.

Bagaski "Yoail" LP (bagaski.bandcamp.com)

Bagaski are an experimental noise outfit from Greece. Their latest offering "Yoail" covers a huge range of sonic territory beginning with the spaced out sci-fi sounds of "Louise" which makes me think of powerful rays of light flowing from a newly discovered sun millions of light years away from Earth. The manic piano playing in "Elia S. Corba" meshes well with the apocalyptic rumblings that move underneath it while the sea of voices that flow throughout "Fager" are simply breathtaking. I find myself continually combing back to the collage like number "phylxx II". It's lulling presence evokes a sense of peace that is inviting and warm as it's psychedelic undertones and colorful textures create a sound that is other worldly to say the least. A stunningly beautiful and inspiring release indeed.

City Of Dawn "Every Sound Reminds Me Of Your Smile" LP (cityofdawn.bandcamp.com)

City Of Dawn is a project founded by Texas musician Damien Duque. First let me say this album is absolutely incredible. Opening piece "Find Me" intertwines layers of subliminal sounds that move with elegance and grace and establish a rich cinematic mindset. The glistening presence of "I Feel You Cuddle Quietly in my Dreams" brings to mind the likes of Eno and Tangerine Dream as the tones offer a wide array of colorful textures that seem to change with each passing second while "Lantern Fest" is one of the corner stones of the album as the track was inspired by Duque's recent experience at a Lantern Fest in Texas. The Lantern Fest is where thousands of revelers join together as a community and create an unforgettable spectacle of light. After an afternoon of live music, dancing, and s’mores, when the sun sets and the time is just right, attendees light the sky with lanterns representing their highest hopes, deepest regrets, and fondest dreams. Reflecting on the evening's festivities Duque says "The event is a memorable night to just sit back and look at tiny amber particles that unfold our memories & stories. Just seeing them brings inner peace and tranquility into the soul which in my perspective I can hear them float happily while showing off their amber light to the universe." Other highlights from the album include the uplifting sounds of "Every Sound Reminds Me Of Your Smile", the introspective touch of "The Sky In Our Eyes" and the mysterious nature of "The Light That Grows Beneath My Wings". This is one of the most well executed and most beautiful releases you will ever hear. TEN STARS!!!

Mythical Zenith "Hiraeth" E.P. (mitchellmacfarlane.bandcamp.com)

"Hiraeth" is the latest E.P. from multi-instrumentalist Mitchell MacFarlane who lives in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. The pieces vary from frantic video game like numbers to more intricate math rock bits and passionate, theatrical soundtracks. "Ganymede" kicks things off with it's upbeat, highly melodic guitar riffs that are accompanied by washes of pulsating synths and an infectious rhythm. "Blue" makes good use of a galloping beat and highly detailed instrumentation that gives a slight hint at metal but leans more to the atmospheric side of things. "Eric" reminds me of legendary composer Mike Oldfield while "The Willow Tree" is even more dramatic and intense. Overall "Hiraeth" is a top notch collection of work from a most impressive young composer. Looking forward to hearing what's next.

Possum "Quick Damage" E.P. (possumyyz.bandcamp.com)

I can't get enough of this debut E.P. from Toronto based rock n roll unit Possum. These guys go full throttle right out of the gate as the blistering sounds of "Quick Damage" are backed by relentless garage rock riffs and psychedelic undertones. Things shift quickly into the dirge driven experimental piece known as "Sunslug". It merges an undeniable sense of menace with pulsating layers of ambient drones and shoegaze like swells. Before you know it the band are back into riff mode as the swirling surf tones of "The Invisible Man" are in full effect and show off the incredible musicianship this band is made of. The intricate guitar attack and pin point rhythm section are second to none as the matter of fact lead vocal delivery compliments everything in grand fashion. Things wind down with the slow passionate feel of "Sleepwalker" which shows off their sense of diversity and sends you off wanting more. A top notch debut from one of my favorite new bands.

Two Souls "A Ghost, A Shadow" Single (2sls.bandcamp.com)

Two Souls is the brainchild of St Louis based musician Demi J. Haynes. Her delicate vocals and comforting guitar playing create a surreal, ambient world on her brand new single "A Ghost, A Shadow". It's the type of song that makes you feel like it was recorded in an empty old house as it's ethereal mood is as eerie as it is beautiful. There's also a looming chorus of sound that filters in and out in just the right places and moves with a supernatural like presence. A truly captivating piece from an immensely talented up and coming songwriter.

"Five For Friday" wth Doug Gillard of Guided By Voices and Nada Surf

Doug Gillard is one of the most notable guitarists and songwriters of the American underground rock scene of the last 30 years. From his work with Death of Samantha, Cobra Verde, Guided By Voices and Nada Surf along with a stellar collection of solo releases he's assembled a truly remarkable discography. Gillard shares some of his favorite songs in this weeks edition of "Five For Friday". You can catch Guided By Voices tonight in Philly at Underground Arts and New Years Eve at The Music Hall Of Williamsburg in Brooklyn.

Sundowners - Blue Green Eyes

Upstate NY band who toured with The Monkees and Hendrix in the late 60s, the Sundowners released the semi-psychedelic album Captain Nemo in 1968, chock full of songs with odd & amazing chord progressions that still manage to sound pop with great melodies & soaring vocals.

Herman's Hermits - No Milk Today

I've loved this song for ages, but recently heard an interview with Graham Gouldman, where he explains how he married separate song ideas together for this song and also "For Your Love". The way he juxtaposes majors & minors here (and in the Hollies' "Bus Stop") has long held an appeal and something i try to keep in mind when writing.

William "Billy" Lyall - Supertrader

Lyall was the keyboardist & cowriter in Scottish pop band Pilot. He recorded one solo LP in 1976, sadly passing away in 1989. Was torn between putting up this song or the wonderfully strange "Maniac" from the same album. Pilot guitarist Ian Bairnson is featured here, and that's Phil Collins on drums.

Echo and the Bunnymen - All That Jazz

One of the great cuts from one of the greatest debut albums.

Ricky Nelson - Hello Mary Lou

Features a favorite solo from James Burton.

Six Records CMM Wants You To Know

Fullback "The Go North" E.P. (fullback.bandcamp.com)

Loving this debut E.P. from Brooklyn based band Fullback. "The 25" kicks everything of quickly with it's captivating vocals, bouncy beat and glistening guitars that give it somewhat of a brit-pop feel. "12 - 2 (by the hearth)" has a bright, uplifting vibe that meshes well with it's optimistic lyrics while "Go North" is more soothing and intricate. Things wind down with "Go North 2" and it's lush, calming presence that moves like a setting sun on a warm Spring day. Highly recommended.

Lunar Kin "Escaping Velocity" E.P. (lunarkin.bandcamp.com)

Lunar Kin are a really impressive new indie pop band out of Myrtle Beach South Carolina. Their debut 4 song E.P. is full of intricate, clean guitars and stellar musicianship that bring to mind the likes of The Connells and The Ocean Blue. The jangling feel of "W Broadway St." opens things up with a breezy looseness and catchy hook while the hazy flavored "Speeding Down Memory Lane" has an uplifting energy and undeniable appeal. Closing number "Last Night On Planet Earth" offers an epic dynamic to everything and sends things off in grand fashion. A captivating debut that sets a solid foundation for what's to come.

Modern English "You're Corrupt" Single (www.modernenglish.me)

Modern English are back with a new album titled "Take Me to the Trees". Lead single "You're Corrupt" is an eerie anthem full of dark undertones that loom over top of a matter of fact style vocal delivery that works together very well. It's shuffling beat and cold presence is down right haunting and I must say I love it. The band hit the road in March of 2017 for a full U.S. tour.

News From Neptune "The Cold Open" E.P. (newsfromneptunemusic.bandcamp.com)

News From Neptune is the brainchild of British musician David Miller and he delivers big on his debut E.P. "The Cold Open". All four songs offer up a variety of tones that are futuristic and inspiring. From the opening notes of the title track you know you are in for something special as the colorful wash of atmospheric sounds flow through your ears with never ending beauty. "Viewfinder" is more melodic and catchy as it's psychedelic flair and infectious riffs make it second to none while the pulsating spirit of "The Man In The Microllight" offers a blend of highly textured tones that are incredible refreshing. Closing piece "Head On Backwards" is a stunning composition that comes off like the theme to a futuristic t.v. sitcom. I really can't say enough good things about this release. Miller has really carved out his own musical style here that perfectly merges elements of more traditional compositions with experimental madness. A truly delightful and inspiring work of art.

Strange Lights "...In The Dawn Sky" 10" E.P. (strangelightsband.bandcamp.com)

Such a breathtakingly beautiful release from Strange Lights out of London. Part one is very colorful and lulling and evokes a sense of elegance and grace throughout. I love the multiple layers of sound that continue to evolve as the track feels like a living breathing entity all it's own. Part two is also atmospheric but incorporates more distinct synth sounds into the mix that move over top of a deep soothing hypnotic bass line and lush effect driven guitars. Copies of the 10" vinyl version of this are already sold out but you can purchase the digital version for just £3 via the bands bandcamp page. A brilliant release sure to satisfy your need for ambient psychedelic beauty.

The Clouded Lights "Stranded On The Path" E.P. (thecloudedlights.bandcamp.com)

The Clouded Lights offer up an excellent balance of post punk and power pop that blends the primal vibes of early Psychedelic Furs with the clever hooks of Squeeze. The Flange driven guitar riff of "Borrowed Hearts" gets everything rolling with it's climbing chords and freight train like beat. "Barter With The World" is more in the pocket and melodic and features a brilliant vocal cadence that puts it over the top while the quick pace of "Could Someone Switch A Light On" features some truly amazing guitar work throughout. Overall "Stranded On The Path" is a well put together E.P. that takes me back to everything that was great about the early days of college radio but with a fresh, welcoming twist.

CMM's 10 Favorite Shows of 2016

I did a lot of traveling in 2016 and got to see over seventy five shows all over the United States. It was hard to pick just ten for this as there were so many performances I enjoyed throughout the year. I'm very happy I got to see and work with so many amazing bands and I look forward to enjoying new music and new adventures in 2017.

Fleetwood Mac Fest At The Fonda Theater Los Angeles 2/10/16

The Best Fest has been putting on theme nights featuring a wide range of musicians, actors and comedians performing the music of a legendary band or artist. Juliette Lewis, Courtney Love, Sarah Silverman, Mark Ronson, Alison Mosshart and others gathered to celebrate the music of Fleetwood Mac and raise money for The Sweet Relief Musicians Fund and The Sweet Stuff Foundation, Both organizations help the musical community and their families with the vital elements often overlooked during periods of illness and disability. The entire evening was a blast and Juliette Lewis's version of Stevie Nicks "Stand Back" stole the show.

Charles Bradley At Lava Fest Norfolk Virginia 5/28/16

Charles Bradley gave an incredibly heartwarming performance at this years Lava Music Fest in Norfolk VA. His amazing voice was matched with an incredible sense of style and swagger that wowed the crowd as he blasted through thunderous renditions of songs from his latest album "Changes" which is available now from Daptone Records.

L.A.M.F. At The Marlin Room At Webster Hall New York City 11/15/16

An All Star line up gathered to perform The Heartbreakers album "L.A.M.F." from start to finish which included original Hearbreakers guitarist Walter Lure, Tommy Stinson (The Replacements/Bash & Pop), Wayne Kramer (MC5), and Clem Burke (Blondie) with special guests Debbie Harry, Cheetah Chrome (Dead Boys), Jesse Malin (D-Generation,Heartattack), Handsome Dick Manitoba and more. The show was a benefit for NYC writer Stephen Saban who is battling cancer. The performance had a lot of energy and humor to it to go along with a lot of looseness and charm. No video footage but there are some clips from the set they did at Bowery Electric earlier that night.

A Tribute To David Bowie The Satellite Los Angeles 2/16/18

The passing of David Bowie this past January was a huge loss to the world. Los Angeles area musicians Chris Stills, Miya Folick, Eric Kufs, Mindy Jones, Adam Busch, Brett Farkas, Laura Mace and others gathered to pay tribute to the rock icon with incredible performances of classic Bowie songs from all eras of his career. The highlight for me was Tim Heidecker's (of Tim & Eric fame) passionate rendition of "Rock N Roll Suicide" which was truly amazing.

Lucius The Jefferson Theatre Charlottesville VA 10/29/16

Lucius are one of my favorite new bands and their album "Good Grief" was certainly one of the best of 2016. I first heard the bands two singers Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig perform at Fleetwood Mac Fest which I mentioned above and included some footage from below. It was great to get to see the full band deliver a knock out performance at the beautiful Jefferson Theatre and I'm hoping to see them again soon

Body/Head,MV Carbon and Silk Purse at The National Sawdust, Brooklyn NY 11/10/16

Made up of Kim Gordon (Free Kitten/Sonic Youth) and Bill Nance (X.O.4, Vampire Belt) Body/Head unleashed a furious set of droned out experimental guitar noise backed by relentless energy and hypnotic visuals. Opening acts Mv Carbon and Silk Purse also put on exciting performances while The National Sawdust served as the perfect venue for the evenings festivities.

Quitzow, Sister Pact, Davide Moscato during Drink More Fest At Bushwick Public House in Brooklyn NY 11/19/16

I had the pleasure of booking a New York City residency for Italian singer/pianist Davide Moscato. He played 8 shows all over the city in venues like The Bowery Electric, Parkside Lounge, Brooklyn Hell Phone and more. His last night was at the Drink More Records Festival at Bushwick Public House. Davide's voice and piano playing was in fine form each and every night and this show was a wonderful send off before returning home to Italy. I also got to see an unforgettable performance by Quitzow which is the moniker of NYC musician Erica Quitzow. Her intensity and passion was accompanied by stunning visuals that radiated positive energy throughout her set. Experimental duo Sister Pact also gave a very memorable performance full of raucous guitar noise, crushing beats and lulling vocals. They have several cassette releases well worth picking up

Clary Sage, Among The Rocks And Roots, Human Services At Elixia in Norfolk VA 12/1/16

A great evening of experimental madness in Norfolk. Clary Sage has quickly become my favorite local noise artist, while Richmond's Amoung The Rocks And Roots offered up an eclectic mix of drones and percussive sounds that reminded me of Crash Worship merged with The Melvins. Human Services opened the evening with a frantic set of psychedelic experimental noise improve that also included some interesting gifts for the audience. A Great night indeed.

Graceless, Rommannis Motte & Young Hierophant at Electroganic Norfolk VA 5/1/16

My band Last Remaining Pinnacle played this show too but I was so inspired by the other three performers I had to write about this one. Each project offered it's own brand of experimental sound manipulation which made the show very special and Electroganic was the perfect intimate venue for the performances.

A Deer A Horse, VoirVoir, Neale Downe, Henbrain, The Cyrenaics at Charlie's in Norfolk Virginia 3/12/16

A nice variety of bands on this bill including two of my favorites A Deer A Horse out of NYC and VoirVoir from Bethlehem PA. Norfolk's Neale Downe, Henbrain out of Carrboro, NC, and The Cyrenaics from Richmond VA were great too. Shows at Charlie's are always fun and this was one I won't soon forget. Looking forward to more events there in 2017.

CMM's 60 Favorite Songs Of 2016

A lot of darkness surrounded 2016 and we lost some truly innovative and amazing musicians this year that will be missed forever. Still in all of the darkness, confusion and trying times we had a ton of new music to inspire us throughout the year. I'm so happy I got to experience so much of it. There were so many bands and artists worthy of being on this list so it was hard to break it down to just 60 tracks but I wanted to share a collection of songs that really inspired me this year. I hope you enjoy these as much as I do. Looking forward to another music filled year in 2017.

1. David Bowie "Lazarus" (davidbowie.com)

There is no particular order to these 60 songs but I still have to put this track first. The loss of David Bowie on January 10th of this year was a devastating blow to us all. His final album "Blackstar" was released just two days before and Bowie had planned the album to be his swan song, and a "parting gift" for his fans before his death. "Lazarus" was the albums second single and it's hard to put into words the feeling I get every time I watch this video.

2. Leonard Cohen "You Want It Darker" (leonardcohen.com)

One of the most amazing songs anyone will ever hear from one of the worlds most incredible poets. RIP Leonard Cohen.

3. Mayflower Madame "Confusion Hill" (mayflowermadame.bandcamp.com)

It doesn't get much better than this. Dark, hypnotic psych rock from Oslo, Norway that delves deep inside your soul. Just one of several stand out tracks from their debut album "Observed In A Dream".

7. Kyle Craft "Eye Of A Hurricane" (kylecraft.bandcamp.com)

Such a stellar cut that features Craft's powerful vocal delivery backed by a pumping piano and an heavy dose of glam rock swag. Think Bowie, classic Elton John and a dash of ragtime flair for good measure.
