Mantra Phase is the brainchild of Texas musician Alex Mullens. His latest release "Mirror Tapes" (out now as a limited cassette on CMM) is a sonic journey made up of lo-fi psychedelic noise rock, that focuses a great deal on experimentation. Alex shared some of his favorite songs in this weeks edition of "Five For Friday" but first have a listen to his track "A Few Goo Dogs Lost Their Way".
Swans - Blind
This song is so hauntingly beautiful. Some of the best lyrics I've ever heard. With Michael Gira's spectacular performance on this song you can really feel all the regret and sadness multiple epiphanies can lead to.
Sugarcubes - Birthday
Been one of my favorite songs since I was a teenager. It has a very confused/happy/childlike/scared vibe to it, which makes senseif you know about the song's subject matter.
Big Black - Passing Complexion
One of my favorite punk songs of all time this song helped create industrial rock and industrial electronic music.
The Velvet Underground - Femme Fatale
If My Bloody Valentine existed in the 60's I believe they would of sounded something close to this. Either way this song is great.
Omar Rodriguez Lopez - Piedras y Ansiedad
One of my favorite electronic songs ever by my favorite guitarist of all time. This whole album is a masterpiece, but this song is the crown jewel.
