Founded by Matthew William and Kedra Caroline, The Morelings hit the Philly scene as a three piece just over 3 years ago. September 26th marked the release of the bands first full-length album, "Same Century", which was produced by Philly phenom Jeff Zeigler (Nothing, Kurt Vile). They have since expanded their act to a five-piece, delivering live performances reflective of the rich, layered studio sound for which they have become known. Beach Towels deliver once again with an incredible display of surf rock magic that radiates from beginning to end. Opening number "Tidal" is an intricate and high energy piece that starts things off in fine fashion. The laid back psychedelic beauty of "Sun Soaked" brings to mind the likes of The Beach Boys, The Beatles and Tommy James while the frantic sounds of "Triptide" sound like the soundtrack for a mind bending carnival ride. The uplifting hook of "Washed Away" has a bit of a 70's singer songwriter stance, as it's soothing melodies quickly give way to an explosion of barn burning noise mayhem. Overall "Palm Tree" is a well executed E.P. full of songs that are fun to listen. Highly recommended.
Candy Maps "Falling Down" Single (candymaps.bandcamp.com)
Impressive offering from this Glasgow based garage-psych unit. The "Psycho Candy" like feel of "Falling Down" makes for a comforting blast of familiarity as it's wave of catchy guitar hooks and straight forward drumming meshes well with it's matter of fact style vocal attack. It's got a grey cinematic glow that moves throughout and is sure to please fans of mid 80's gloom and doom. The B-Side "Fly Trap" has a distant and minimal structure that showcases more of an ambient tone. Looking forward to more from these emerging rockers soon.
Deutsche Ashram "Deeper And Deeper" LP (deutscheashram.bandcamp.com)
A brilliant debut from this electronic/shoegaze duo made up of Ajay Saggar and Merinde Verbeek. The record starts off with the powerful and hypnotic sounds of "Little Matter" which draws you in with it's thunderous bass line and infectious rhythm. "Ocean Of You" is a glistening, cinematic number full of lush experimental sounds and Verbeeks's beautiful vocals. "Masai" has a darker feel that looms throughout the track and adds a sinister element to the mix while "HAHA Hid It" is more upbeat and warm. Other highlights include the rich shoegaze feel of "Blue And All Of (Carbon Monoxide)" the mysterious tone of "The Place That We Miss" and the ethereal presence of "Draze'n'Cuss". A phenomenal release recommended for fans of Cocteau Twins, Siouxsie and the Banshees and Curve.

Shelf creates it's own distinct vibe throughout the tracks that make up "Red/Green". Sure there are traditional elements like guitars and familiar song structures but there's much more to it than that. The album has a quality that comes off like it's own language or way of life. "Roaming" is a wash of experimental instrumentation that surrounds you like a comforting blanket on a cold winters night. It's swinging beat and 70's soul style bass line matched with it's left of center vocal delivery make for one of the best songs I've heard all year. The lo-fi spirit of "Hide Within Time" is passionate and inspiring as waves of psychedelic tones flourish throughout while the pulsating synths of "Across" bring you into another dimension of inspiring sounds. "Soft" further cements just how amazing this record is as everything culminates together to paint an image of musical beauty. "Red/Green" is rugged and raw and hits you in all the right places. It's a remarkable accomplishment and one of the purest albums I've had the pleasure of coming across in a long time. Bravo!!!
Led by the delicate and charming tone of vocalist Martha Bouchier, Toronto jangle pop unit Snows offer up an energetic mix of songs on their debut release "Solid State". From the booming garage rock beat of "In My Kingdom" to the hook filled sounds of "Oh My" Snows showcases their knack for writing full bodied guitar driven indie pop songs full of passion and grace with a bit of grit and grime for good measure. "Down On My Love" is my favorite of all the tracks as it's over driven guitars and up beat tempo give a good hint at what the band must be like live. Most of all it sounds like everyone are having a great time playing together which in he end is what it's all about.
Sun Starer "Yeah I'm Alright" LP (sunstarer.bandcamp.com)
From the opening riff of "TV Calls" you know you are in for something great. Glasgow's Sun Starter bang out 11 well crafted power pop tracks on their latest effort "Yeah I'm Alright" which is full of monster riffs and clever vocals from head honcho Philip Ivers. The feel good flow of songs like "Bubblegum" and "Flaky" work great next to the high energy attack of "Until Apocalypse" and "(You Don't Wanna Do This) Anymore". The somber tone of "Innate" mixes things up a bit with it's moody melancholy style that eventually gives way to the crushing blast of power pop known as "Convivium". The last few tracks of the record show off Ivers diversity as a songwriter as "Twice A Day" and "Unprepared" delve into elements of folk and singer songwriter territories. Overall "Yeah I'm Alright" is an amazing balance of inspiring songs, passionate lyrics and impressive musicianship. A top notch record across the board.
Jaguanera "Did You Know?" Single (jaguanera.bandcamp.com)
"Did You Know?" the first single from the new Jaguanera album "Head To Tail" is an infectious alternative rock masterpiece. It's cagey guitar riff and passionate vocals set the pace as a subtle wash of electronics flows underneath. The song harnesses an incredible amount of power and energy while maintaining a well balanced and graceful groove. It's rolling bass line and in the pocket drumming only add to the brilliance of the track as it creates an uplifting and mind bending vibe. The Rome, Italy based band begins a two week U.S. tour on Friday August 26th with a show at Rock Wood Music Hall in New York City (rockwoodmusichall.com). An impressive new single from this Chicago based indie pop rock n roll outfit that channels the spirits of classic Squeeze and Elvis Costello. It's high energy tempo and catchy vocal cadence are sure to make you move as the band posses a level of musicianship that's off the chart. They've also made this excellent video clip featuring top notch animation courtesy of Valerie Paykov. "Talk Talk" is taken from the bands upcoming E.P. "Burn The Evidence".
Massive Attack "The Spoils" ft. Hope Sandoval (www.massiveattack.co.uk)
Massive Attack team up with Hope Sandoval for what can only be described as a dream collaboration. The lush, soothing spirit of "The Spoils" radiates with grace and beauty as Sandoval's delicate vocal delivery sounds like it was sent down from the stars on a breezy clear skied summer evening. The hypnotic beat and wash of comforting synths coat your mind with their lulling cinematic presence. The piece really showcases Sandoval in a new way and the brilliant video starring Cate Blanchett only adds to the fact that "The Spoils" is one of the best singles of 2016.

Sporting an amazing vocal range and jangling guitar attack New York City's Miracle Sweepstakes deliver big on their latest digital single. "Diagonal Retreat" is anything but typical as it's crisp indie pop approach is constantly being mixed up with odd time changes that make for a style I've never really heard anywhere else. It's definitely got a pop appeal to it but with elements of prog rock and jazz thrown in as well. B-Side "Time Is The Joke" brings an eclectic blend of sounds to the plate, creating a spontaneous dynamic that keeps things exciting. The track builds to a peak point as multiple instruments all come into play creating a whirlwind of atmospheric bliss alongside a consistent pop sensibility that is undeniably brilliant to say the least.

"Talent" the second single from The Pixies new album "Head Carrier" is a solid blast of alt-rock wizardry that clocks in at just over the 2 minute mark. Black Francis clever lyrical stance shines brightly but what impresses me the most are guitarist Joey Santiago's jaw dropping leads. From his dirge driven bends to the punchy surf rock runs it's all very inspiring to hear. "Head Carrier" hits the streets on September 30th.
Whaler "Deep End" Single (whalerpa.bandcamp.com)
A fine pair of tracks from Philadelphia based indie rock unit Whaler. "Deep End" has a powerful vocal sound that's not drenched in reverb but carries a big room presence that works well. Add in a hooky guitar riff, driving bass line and galloping beat and you've got a really fun song that will have you singing along in no time as it's got that "good times" type of feel to it. "The Weather Lately" has more of a textured guitar sound that sets a moody tone before kicking into a more uplifting section that shows off the bands diversity and ability to write excellent songs. Now if I can just get a chance to see these guys live I'll be all set. Bravo!!!
An impressive debut from this high energy psych unit out of Austria. Opening number "Glockenspielfuzz" sets a cinematic presence and makes for an intriguing introduction of what's to come. The magnificent tone of "It's Alright" is highlighted by flourishing layers of chiming guitars and uplifting vocal harmonies that take you on an enlightening journey back to the psychedelic 60's. "She's Tornado" is a bit darker and more mysterious sounding and makes great use of a fabulous rolling bass line and a blistering wah-wah driven guitar attack while the organ based "Menon" and reverb drenched sounds of "You Don't Mind" are fine examples of mind bending, free spirited rock n roll. A truly spectacular effort from beginning to end that leaves me wanting more of these far out sounds.
Dinosaur Jr "Goin Down" Single (dinosaurjr.com)
Another top track from the new Dinosaur JR album "Give A Glimpse Of What Yer Not". It's hard hitting, high energy and full of all the things I've always loved about this band from J's trademark vocals and blistering guitar leads to the spot on pounding rhythm section of Lou Barlow and Murph. Great video clip shot at House of Vans, in Brooklyn. Catch the band on tour all over the U.S. and Europe throughout the rest of the year.
Ioda Rosa "Ferris Wheel" E.P. (iodarosa.bandcamp.com)
Loving this initial offering from Australia's Ioda Rosa. The title track starts things off with the ominous sounds of a single piano that builds into a very moving piece that's melancholy and cold. "Gradient" is fueled by a heavy does of chainsaw style guitars that loom over a matter of fact style vocal delivery and laid back rhythm section. The beautiful swelling soundscapes that flow throughout this song add an element of beauty and grace that really stands out while the acoustic based "The Choreographer" follows in fine form. The delicate feeling "Figure Eights" might be my favorite track of the bunch. It's intricate guitar pattern and words of passion really hit home and although it's full of grayish tones there is a ray of hope that projects from underneath all of it's gloom and doom. Overall a promising debut that is comforting, atmospheric and kind.
Midnight Door "Half Moon" E.P. (midnightdoor.bandcamp.com)
Midnight Door is the brainchild of Los Angeles musician Luke Janela. His latest release "Half Moon" is a truly amazing body of work led by Janela's incredible cello playing and passionate vocal stance. Lead off track "mooooooon" is a lively number that features a mysterious flair and enigmatic presence that really draws you in. It instantly stimulates your ears and mind and lets you know you are in for a very welcoming listening experience that is sure to be one of a kind. The acoustic opening of "The Way To Praise" quickly gives way to a highly infectious driving beat that will certainly make you want to dance as the vibrant layers of cello and futuristic tones radiate throughout. The powerful spirit of "A Satisfied Mind" is cleverly matched with a singer songwriter type sensibility. It's undeniably catchy and the type of song that reeks of energy and makes you feel like you are right there with them as you aggressively sing along. The cagey demeanor of "Islands And Tides" is another track that tugs at the soul. There's an intensity and power to it that seems to serve as a cathartic release for Janela and it's just one of the many mind blowing moments of the record. The blissful aura of "The New Radness" and the bouncy feel of "Seriously" further cement "Half Moon" as one of the best releases of 2016. It's an innovative record that incorporates a vast range of musical styles under one beautifully crafted umbrella to formulate a sound that is truly all it's own.
Orations "Oh, the Horror" Single (orations.bandcamp.com)
Buffalo New York's Orations offer up another stunning single that perfectly captures their jangling post punk/college rock sound. Fueled by Jess Collins dynamic vocal delivery and Paul Morin's lush, full bodied guitar sounds "Oh, My Horror" takes you on a sonic journey that is dark and haunting yet subliminally catchy at the same time. B-side "Spit" is faster and more melodic and makes me think what it be like if Siouxsie Sioux had fronted an early line up of R.E.M. Matt Chavanne's driving beat and Jason Draper's catchy bass line really push the energy level over the top and give it a special kind of swing that makes me want to hear it over and over. A premium pair of songs from one of my favorite new bands.
Made up of Tom and Sean Power and hailing from Dingle, Ireland, Wild Surmise have been making music since 2010. Their new album "Suaimhneas" is a breathtaking array of blissful soundscapes and colorful experimentation "The Endless Choir" is a gorgeous piece that brings to mind the likes of Brian Eno and Tangerine Dream but has it's own sense of tone and style as well. Things start to shift a bit during "Emberno" as it has a much more frantic sound that balances a sputtering almost neurotic feel with a blanket of mind numbing sonic forces. The upbeat "Flatpak" features some beautiful piano work over top of a syncopated, pulsating rhythm which makes for a really innovative track while "Treimhse" is a rich hypnotic masterpiece. The bleak yet inviting piano based "Suaimhneas" is nothing short of stellar and meshes well with the more eclectic "Within Sight". All of the tones throughout this album feel so precisely crafted and have a maturity to them that is second to none. "In This light" closes out the album in peaceful fashion and serves as an end credits of sorts to this incredibly well executed release.
Excellent debut from this Bethlehem P.A. based jangle pop unit. Simple song structures accompanied by catchy vocal melodies give these songs a heavy does of lovable charm. The guitars in stand out numbers like "Sleep Debt" and "Limerence" remind me of old favorites like Ultra Cindy and Velocity Girl while "Traces" is more reflective of late 70's indie rockers The Clean. The engineering work of Matt Molchany (Shards Studios) adds an extra layer of icing to the cake as the production reflects the bands personality in fine form. A stellar effort from beginning to end.

Denmark's Fugleflugten have just released this truly beautiful single. "Ensom Galakse" brings layers of ethereal guitars and futuristic keyboards to create a swirling mix of post punk energy reminiscent of The Cure, Echo & The Bunnymen and Sigur Ros. The underlying melodies and pop hooks that flow throughout this piece are simply breathtaking while it's crawling rhythm and haunting vocals play at your soul. A welcoming blast of sonic bliss.

I've been happily blasting these guys debut E.P. for months and this new single "Belly Ache" is even more amazing. You can call it pop punk, you can call it indie rock but really what you get here is a stripped down rock n roll number that's as aching to Buddy Holly as it is essential punk bands of the 90's like Jawbreaker and J Church. It's charming, it's powerful and word on the streets is these guys have a full length coming this Fall. Get into it.

Drenched in reverb and fuzz This Blinding Light take you on a rich hypnotic trip on "Mercury" the first single from their new album "Seven Feathers". The enticing vocal delivery that opens the track draws you in building up to an infectious rhythm fueled by pulsating guitars and powerfully organic drumming.
It's a psychedelic mind bender that fans of bands like Spaceman 3, Ride and Loop are sure to enjoy. A fabulous effort from these Seattle based shoegazers.

Another top notch single here from Today Junior. "Leaving Easy" is catchy as hell, uplifting and certain to elevate your day in the most positive way. Backed by galloping drums and a captivating guitar sound that channels the best of Mascis and Santiago while adding it's own brand of indie rock snarl to the mix.

My favorite track from the bands new album "Helter Seltzer". I'm especially fond of the way the vocal cadence moves alongside the undeniable hook that is sure to have you singing along by the second chorus. The blistering guitar solo adds a nice touch and it looks like these guys had a fun time making the video too. "We've always made overtures toward being a pop band, but we've generally had the inclination to obscure those pop leanings in grit and chaos — to screw them up with fuzzed-out tones and raucous performances," says guitarist and vocalist Keith Murray. Another great one from one of America's best bands.
Clifffs are a new indie rock/garage pop unit based in Dallas Texas featuring longtime drummer of The Apples In Stereo, John Dufilho on Vocals and Guitar. The bands debut album "Bill, Your Only Human" features 13 tracks that echo the spirits of 60's garage rock and 70's punk with a focus on catchy hooks and relentless energy. John shares some of his favorite songs in this weeks edition of "Five For Friday" but first check out the video for their new single "Volcano". Reg Presley's voice is weird and great. if i had it in me, I'd probably just scream all the time like King Khan (easily one of the best singers around) or Gerry Roslie from the Sonics, but my voice just doesn't do that. instead i get inspired by people with odd voices.
Asheville North Carolina musician Matthew Reed, really raises the bar with this brand new E.P. from his atmospheric dream pop project Holy Wall. The record is made up of four astonishingly beautiful songs that sound like they were sent down to earth from another world. From the cinematic flavor of "No Nature" to the experimentally layered textures of the title track Reed has constructed an absolute masterpiece. Things lean towards a more folk based sound on "Living Is Easy" but the eerie vibes stay intact throughout as there's a hypnotic element to it all that keeps you locked in. The E.P. is capped off with the near ten minute epic known as "Dreams Of Annihilation" which combines instrumentation with colorful glimpses into sound collage style territories all the while emitting a beautiful and positive radiant glow. A remarkable release from an incredible new artist on the rise."Night Stops" will be available April 16th

This recently unveiled piece from the upcoming self titled Kromo CD E.P. is a experimental mind bender to the fullest extend. Headed by the experimental guitar attack of Pittsburgh musician Kevin Monahan, "Be Water" is a lush flowing soundscape highlighted by many twists and turns on what feels like a journey through uncharted areas of space. There's also an underlying jazz feel in Monahan's playing that sits well with the futuristic essence of the track. Beautiful, haunting and breathtakingly brilliant.
Kyle Craft "Eye Of A Hurricane" Single (subpop.com)
This high energy new single from Portland by way of Shreveport, Louisiana musician Kyle Craft is down right incredible. Led by Craft's flamboyant vocal presence the track echoes the likes of early Elton John and Ziggy Stardust era Bowie. It's got a great balance between 70's glam rock swag and
ragtime era sway as Daniel Talmadg lays down some mean piano playing throughout the track while the arrangement is absolutely stellar. There's also an undeniable appeal and soulfulness to it all that I can't help but love. Off of Craft's latest album "Dolls Of Highland".

"Ablaze", the new single from School Of Seven Bell's latest album "SVIIB" is a powerful blast of electro laced dream pop. The song narrates the story of Alejandra Deheza and Benjamin Curtis relationship, before his tragic death from lymphoma in 2013. It's thunderous beat and pulsating synths lead by Deheza's passionate voice make it one of the bands best tracks to date as it's ethereal mood and underlying ambience are both beautiful and intense.

An infectious blast of garage psych rock n roll that delivers from beginning to end.

This Boston indie surf rock trio formed in 2012 and has been held together by brothers, Harry & Mike O'Toole ever since. Their latest single "Blunt Breath" is a crushing blast of alt-rock n roll mayhem that brings to mind Guided By Voices, Jawbreaker and Yo La Tengo without really sounding like any of those bands at all. Their walls of fuzzed out guitars backed by a no frills pounding drum beat quickly make them one of my favorite new bands.
Edmonton Alberta based psych/post punk project Blume is the brainchild of musician Arthur Bennell. His latest E.P. channels post punk heavyweights like The Cure, Joy Division and Savage Republic and is available now as a limited cassette from CMM. Power-Buddies - In My Mind
Power-Buddies are a garage band from my home town Edmonton, AB. The song "In My Mind" was recorded back when they were a duo, but now they play as a 3 piece. They have always been one of my favorite local bands to listen to and see live ever since the began playing. They are always energetic and raw, and they have catchy songs that just stick with you. Spacemen 3 - Walkin' With Jesus
When I first heard Spacemen 3 I fell in love and they have been my favorite band ever since. The way they are able to make such soulful and moving psychedelic music with only a few chords changed how I went about making music. They proved to me that less is more. The music of J Spaceman and Sonic Boom will always be in my favorites.
The KVB - Never Enough
The KVB are one of my favourite bands out right now. Never Enough is a single off their latest album Of Desire which was released March 11, 2016. I love their minimalist sound and electronic production. Their visuals and aesthetic also fit so perfectly with the music they make, its almost hypnotizing at points.
Oasis- Live Forever
Lately I have been on an Oasis kick. Their music always gets me feeling nostalgic, bringing back memories of driving around with my parents when I was younger. They are somewhat of a guilty pleasure for me, but to me they are a link between Shoegaze and the mainstream. I think a big part of that is being on Creation Records, and the production methods that were used on their first record.

"Boss Lady," the new single from NYC noir-pop group Deidre & the Dark is an infectious blast of sonic energy that merges early soul, big band and jazz. Deidre's passionate and powerful voice brings to mind classic girl groups of the 50's and 60's while the production style falls somewhere between new electronic producers like Toro y Moi and vintage Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. With an E.P. in the works for late 2016, Deidre & the Dark will be joining French Horn Rebellion on the road for select dates in the Northeast this March.
Fire To The Stars "Made Of Fire" Single (seahorserecordings.com)
Such a brilliant and powerful new single from Australia's Fire To The Stars that comes equipped with this passionately moving video from director Matthew Chuang. The gloomy melancholy sounds created on "Made Of Fire" are second to none as the ambient textures and beautiful vocals draw you in and sit well next to the orchestral instrumentation and flowing melodies that loom over ghost like undertones. It has a soothing spirit that's also haunting all at the same time as it's slow pace generates a dense level of mystery and intrigue. Clearly one of the best tracks I've heard this year.
Iggy Pop "Gardenia" Single (iggypop.com)
Having been such a fan of Iggy for so long and listening to his records over and over for years, his voice on "Gardenia" is like an unexpected visit from an old friend that you welcome with open arms. There is certainly an ode to Iggy's years working with David Bowie throughout this track as he locks into a phenomenal groove that's submerged in all of his trademark swagger. Backed by Joshua Homme and guitarist Dean Fertita of Queens of the Stone Age and Arctic Monkeys drummer Matt Helders, the musicianship throughout the song is simply incredible as the band lays back, never overplaying and let Iggy do his thing. This Puyallup, Washington based band craft a captivating mix of post punk and snyth sounds full of catchy hooks and atmospheric dynamics. Opening number "The Black Sheep" channels the spirits of Joy Division and New Order as the pulsating synths reek havoc across your mind. The melodies keep you moving as stand out track "Borderland" adds a touch of Psychedelic Furs like flair as the the banging beats and glistening guitars of "East Hall" make for a shining blast of dance inducing electro pop. The band show a more experimental side during the twisted and hypnotic sounding "Dark Flow" before settling back in on "Seraphic Spheres Tremble in the Autumnal Arcade" which feels like a song from the soundtrack of a lost John Hughes film. Overall an excellent album sure to please early 80's post punk enthusiasts.
A breathtakingly beautiful record from this Piano, Texas based project. Two ambinet soundscape pieces "Out of Everything that Glows" and "Hold" kick things off in fine form as each track adds just enough of a rugged touch to the layers of well crafted sound experimentation to take the tones over the top. A reverb drenched cover of the Ella Fitzgerald classic "Blue Moon" meshes quite well with the spaced out originals that follow. "Katy Lake" and "Russell Creek View" channel the spirits of Buddy Holly and The Velvet's while the final two cuts "The Deerfield Lights" and "Partners In Crime" lay back into Eno like territory. A soothing and inspiring release from beginning to end.
So Pitted "Feed Me" Single(subpop.com)
"Feed Me" off of Seattle based band So Pitted's new album "Neo" is a no punches pulled rocker full of relentless aggression from start to finish that's sure to deliver a sledgehammer sized blast to your ears.I love the grinding, dirge like riff that drives this song alongside the distorted droning vocal and ferocious blasts of guitar feedback that serve as a fine lesson in musical brutality. It's maniacal, it's menacing and it's down right infectious.
Youngest Of Elders is the brainchild of San Francisco based musician Jesse Gale. With a songwriting style that's mainly focused on dealing with and understanding the angst, fears, anxiety and nostalgia of past, present, and future, Youngest Of Elders is constantly pushing towards a sound that's reminiscent of Joy Division, The Cure, My Bloody Valentine, Hum and many more. Jesse shares some of his favorite songs in this weeks edition of "Five For Friday" but first have a listen to his song "Before Beauty" from his latest E.P. Radio Dept. "1995"
I can't remember the first time I heard this band, but I remember hearing this track and being blown away by its simplistic and atmospheric melodies. I saw them in San Francisco in 2010, and lost it when they rocked this one. I love and hate that they rarely play live, or release new material on a regular basis, for that matter.
Pedro the Lion "Rapture"
I heard this track in an old Thrasher skate video and loved it. Listened to their whole Control album right after and became inspired to find the perfect marriage of lyrics and music, combined with a ton of dynamics and emotion. Besides Pink Floyd records, this is the first concept album I listened to and studied like crazy.
Joy Division "Disorder"
This is the band and song that changed everything for me. The intensity of this song will always get me in a better mood, despite its lyrical content and Ian's tragic end. This song was the gateway to my musical journey, and helped me make some upbeat, yet moody songs. Nowadays, if I ever get stuck writing music, I'll listen back to this song to remember to simplify things.
The Appleseed Cast "On Reflection"
This is another "simple yet complex" song from an amazing record and band. Their tones and melodies are some of my favorites. One of the many bands that I would research their gear to try to emulate the delays and reverbs and distortions. They change their sound every record, which always good to hear. I think they're putting out a new record in 2016, and I'm really excited to see what direction they go in this time around.
The Velvet Teen "Gyzmkid"
One of the best kept secrets from the Cotati, CA area. These guys consistently release amazing material and change their sound completely every time. Got a lot of inspiration years ago to try blending electronic samples and electric guitars because of this song. This song blew me away with the drumming of their then new drummer, who is insane to watch live.
Daniel Ash "So Alive" Single (www.danielashmusic.com)
Bauhaus/Love & Rockets/Tones On Tail alumni Daniel Ash is back with "Stripped" his first album since 2002. For over 35 years Daniel has been one of the seminal figures in alternative music by creating a sound that fuses elements of electronica with punk, goth, and glam rock. "Stripped" is made up of "Re-takes" of tracks from Daniel's previous bands all done in a style that resembles various aspects of electronic music with an atmospheric/ambient slant "A-La Brian Eno Meets Bowie". For the albums first single Ash revisits Love And Rockets most successful track "So Alive" offering up a new angle on the magical post punk masterpiece. The track also features production duties from the legendary John Fryer who helped craft the original.

Excellent track from this Liverpool based band who's sound is rooted in 60's psychedelia with a touch of hypnotic soul. "Somehow" is a plea for peace and love that starts with a smooth, laid back groove, before breaking into a sonic blast of blistering guitar wizardry. The musicianship is off the chart and I'm also impressed by their ability to set a breathtakingly beautiful mood. A stand out track that brings to mind "Darkside" era Pink Floyd, The Black Keys and The Doors.
Loving You "Nothing But Glory" (Grindhouse Edition) (lovingyoumusic.bandcamp.com)
I'm blown away by the new single from Brooklyn's Loving You. Led by the incredible presence of vocalist Alison Clancy "Nothing But Glory" harnesses a power and spirit that draws you in and takes you on a hypnotic journey throughout a world of mystery and intrigue. The band create a dark and heavy mood throughout the track with an array of ambient and electronic sounds that crush you from beginning to end. A truly beautiful and relentless piece that leaves me anxiously waiting to hear what comes next.
Saso "Mysterium" LP (saso-band.bandcamp.com)
Such an incredibly moving album from this Dublin based duo made up of Jim Lawler and Ben Rawlins. "Mysterium" begins with a minamalist piano composition that quickly gives way to the delicate almost jazz like sounds of "Solar" which works well alongside the cinematic flair of "High Speed".
The passionate vocals of "Winter Into Spring" make it a most uplifting piece while "The Cave" brings to mind visions of heavy snow in the dead of Winter.
The colorful undertones of "Clouds Forming" add a nice touch to the overall mood of the album. It's droning textures build and build into a ravishing ray of ambient bliss. The rich, dark feel of "Hermetic" is also a highlight as it makes you feel like you are going further and further down a mysterious path before everything comes to a sudden end. "Mysterium" is a brilliant work of art that should be listened to from start to finish without interruption.

Great to hear new music from one of my all time favorite bands. "Supersonic" is one of the best Soul Asylum songs to come out in years as it's full of the powerful guitar hooks we've come to love matched with Dave Priner's trademark voice. The rhythm section made up of drummer Michael Bland and bassist Winston Roye work together in thunderous fashion while guitarist Justin Sharbono adds to the flourishing rock n roll attack. This is the first single from the bands new album "Change Of Fortune" which is available worldwide today. Catch the band at the legendary First Avenue in their hometown of Minneapolis on March 26th.
The Verigolds "For Margaret" LP (www.theverigolds.com)
"For Margret" the debut album from San Diego Indie pop unit The Verigolds is top notch from head to toe. From the opening chords of "Gloom" you know you are in for a treat as this is the type of band that will win you over in an instant with their delightful melodies and infectious charm. "All The Same" offers up a touch of 80's pop with it's pulsating synths a driving rhythm. It's backed by a catchy hook that brings to mind the likes of Bowie, and Missing Persons. The bright dreamy sounds of "Crossfire" bring a glowing spirit that's highlighted by Jenna Cotton's beautiful vocals while the marching pace of "Skypipe" features a welcoming does of heart warming strings and vibrant percussion. I get a strong Neil Young vibe during the enticing attack of "Desert Song". It's galloping beat and flourishing guitar sounds make it one of the albums standout tracks while the energetic tone of "Grunge" shows the bands ability to combine melodic pop hooks with a sense of cinematic ambiance. Overall "For Margaret" is packed with amazing songs that are sure to kick off your spring in fine form.

Tim Buckley : Starsailor
This is the song I think of when i want to listen to a voice and experimental music.
Tim Buckley entrusts himself to improvisation for this entire album.
This song is the title track and the words are a poem from Beckett while the vocal line is a foolhardy exercise for voice.
Sixteen vocals overdubbed, in an ocean of shouts, whispers,moans and groans.
A unique experimental song in the world, with a voice from an unknown place.
Area : Gioia e rivoluzione
Area were a really great Italian band, with the guest star of another experimental voice.
Demetrio Stratos. It's impossible to forget this man.
An expert in diplophony, triplophony and flautophony, ( 2-3 sounds emitted simultaneously with the voice) he used his voice as an instrument.
The players are great musicians too coming from the jazz world.
The song celebrates the power of imagination, which transforms a machine gun into a double bass, exploding thoughts instead of bullets.
It’s a hymn to freedom, in a bloody political period in Italy.
Pink Floyd : The Great gig in the sky
From their classic album, "Dark Side Of The Moon", "The Great Gig In The Sky" is a masterpiece to me. It is due to the harmonic piano progression that i love to hear. It sounds like a soul-gospel track. The cinematic and expressive piano mixed with the amazing theatrical voice of Clare Torry is both unique and masterful.
Deep Purple : Child in time
I love “In Rock “, it's one of the first rock albums I heard when I was a child, and this song is a wonderful progressive rock piece.
Ian Gillan's voice has a unique and shocking vocal style and in this song his voice is perfect. It's quiet but rocking, strong but sweet.
The guitar is a blade around your throat, whereas the lyrics have mysterious but inspired verses.
The final part is an excellent blast of hard rock that's so difficult to play on stage.
King Crimson : In the court of the Crimson King
From the first album by this magic band. An opera that is truly unique.The song is surreal with some enchanting atmospheres.
The mellotron is insistent and the chorus is obsessive and throbbing while the flute in the middle part is evocative.
Fripp and Lake are musicians with great technical skills and were very innovative while Lake's voice is totally clean and reassures the listener, taking his hand in the court of the king,among a witch,a queen, a funeral,piper and other strange characters.
Progressive Rock lived an unforgettable moment with this song and with this album too. No one can forget this band.
Shining Dust is an Electropop project founded by musician Alessandro Vitalon in Milan in 2013. His debut album "Mirror" (available now from Seahorse Recordings (www.seahorserecordings.com) mixes electro-pop, and trip hop with elements of 80's inspired new wave. We sat down with Alessandro to talk about
his early musical influences, how Shining Dust started and the writing and recording process of "Mirror".
CMM-What are your first musical memories and what bands/artists made the biggest impact on your musical style?
Ale-I remember my first concert in Milan! It was the Glass Spider Tour by David Bowie in the 1987! I was 14 years old and thanks to David I learned what makes a perfect live show and how I should play on stage and last but not least that a live concert is first of all a big show for people watching you…not only a show for yourself! I remember “The Joshua Three” by U2 as a beautiful album that introduced me to the New Wave music genre that still today represents the roots of my music style. I also remember when I listened to “Smells Like Teen Spirit” for the first time and I said to myself “wow…such an amazing sound and energy like nothing I have ever heard before!!!”. I think Grunge was the last music revolution around the world because of its message and social impact.
CMM-When did the band form and who makes up the current line up?
Ale-Shining Dust was born in 2013 as the natural evolution of my first dark wave band Aqusha. I was the founder, singer, guitarist and bassist of Aqusha with which I played in some popular Live Club in Milan like Tunnel and Alcatraz. When I finished my music experience with Aqusha I started Shining Dust as a one man band.
CMM-What was the song writing and recording process of your new album "Mirror" like? Any particular inspiration for the songs?
Ale-I record my songs in my home studio. My song writing process usually starts with a new sound I create with my DAW and with a very simple chord sequence I can play with a keyboard or my guitar. Another way is when I listen to a beat loop or bass chords in my mind and I quickly record them with an ipad or my DAW. Once I have some of the instruments recorded I start to listen to the instrumental base and try to sing over it with some melodies and lyrics inspired by the music. The main inspirations for my music are some of my favourite genres like electropop, trip hop and new wave. My lyrics are inspired to Shining Dust Philosophy: only through the full consciousness of our dusty condition as human beings in the universe can one reach the shining or the happiness. CMM-Any particular gear you all used in making the album?
Ale-Most of the songs were made recording audio tracks like bass, guitar and voice and recording MIDI tracks like keyboards, sound FX and drum machine. Some songs like Magic and LIgereza were all made and recorded with my iPad inspired by some special trip around the world.
CMM-If you could do a a film score for any film director who would it be?
Ale-David Lynch, Wim Wenders, David Cronenberg just to mention three of them.
CMM-What is the music scene like in Italy right now?
Ale-It's a very difficult scenario for independent musicians in Italy right now because it’s very hard to have visibility, promotion and some chance to play live if you make your own music! The Major Labels are leading the music industry in a very strong and monopolistic way spreading around the country only q few artists playing mainstream pop music. There are many great indie artists offering great electronic music but they don’t have any chance to become popular and or reach many people.
CMM-Any touring or shows planned for the coming months? 8. What else does the band have planned for the future?
Ale-No touring or shows planned for the coming months because up to now this is not my priority. Currently I’m working on promoting “Mirror” around the world on the web through Radio, Blogs and Magazines and I'm studying audio engineering to become a good music producer. I've been producing some very interesting US artists right now. I'm also starting to compose some soundtracks for fashion parade here in Milan and next year I’m going to start working on the new album.

Miami post punk unit Astari Nite impress with their latest single "Always Like Yesterday". Beach For Tiger "Afternoons in Space" (www.soundcloud.com/beach-for-tiger)
"Afternoons in Space", the second single from London's Beach For Tiger is a laid back number that blends 60's psychedelic sounds with soul and jazz influences and a touch of 80's pop perfection. The hypnotic vocals are what attracted me to this track first as the phrasing and atmospheric delivery opens up a beautiful world of psychedelic bliss. It's rolling bass line and in the pocket percussion sweeten the mood even more and compliment the crystal clear guitar sounds that chime throughout. A cleverly well written track backed by exquisite musicianship and a flourishing layer of ambient textures.
What an amazing debut from this Toronto based experimental unit. Sikflowr immediately draw you in with their seductive, infectious like presence as opening track "Sugar Town (Go Get It)" captures you in it's web of psychedelic mystery. "The Bugs Are Coming" follows a loosely structured path that's full of distorted guitars that vary from dirge like chords to high pitched runs that sound like they are being performed on guitars made of glass. The more jazz based "Bodies In The Garage" features a sea of deep atmospherics while tracks like "Sikflowr" and "Not My Dog" are more melodic. Overall "Common Era" is a beautiful collection of rich sounding pieces that instill a feeling of travel, openness and warmth.
Sudogwon "IIII" E.P. (sudogwon.bandcamp.com)
I was thrilled when I got the news about this new Sudogwon E.P. and it easily lives up to my expectations. Opening with the amazingly titled "TDAH (No Soy Jason Pierce, Pero Bueno...)" things kick off in fine fashion as this stripped down guitar driven piece is backed by a collection of spacey drones and a cool lo-fi feel that adds a touch of G.B.V. like charm. "(Midori Kobayashi Te Amo) Desde Que Tenía Seis" is a rather bluesy feeling psych/folk piece while the blistering guitar attack of "Robo #2" sets things over the top and adds a bit of angst to the mix. Things wind down with the psych pop fueled sounds of "¿Cómo Hago?" which rounds out this E.P. well and filters in some really outstanding experimental sounds to what could be this Venezuelan based bands best song yet.
The I Don't Cares "Love Out Loud" Single (www.paulwesterberg.com)
So as most of you probably know by now Paul Westerberg and Juliana Hatfield have teamed up to form The I Don't Cares. "Love Out Loud" from the duo's debut album "Wild Stab" is a raunchy, high energy rocker led by a buzzsaw like guitar attack and Westerbergs trademark rasp. At a romping two minutes and seventeen seconds the track takes things back to "Sorry Ma" era Replacments when the band was at it's rawest and most stripped down point. So excited to hear these two making raw no frills rock n roll. Check out this brilliantly put together animated video below.
The Orange Kyte "Dope: 86" Single (theorangekyte.bandcamp.com)
I'm blown away by the colorful sounds of this new single from The Orange Kyte out of Vancouver. It's psychedelic style and rich guitars are highlighted by a classic 60's vocal stance that paints a warm cinematic world of intrigue and wonder. Led by musician Stevie Moonboots and backed by a top notch support squad of drummer Dave Mulvaney and keyboardist Derick O’ Neill "Dope: 86" is nothing short of magical. I can't wait to hear what's next.
