CMM's 17 Favorite Albums of 2017

1. Sweet Apple "Sing The Night In Sorrow"

The new offering from indie rock super group Sweet Apple is unreal good. All the songwriting is top notch and full of rocking riffs that never let up. I've probably listened to "Summers Gone" and "World I'm Gonna Leave You" a thousand times. What more could you expect from members of Cobra Verde and Dinosaur JR alongside guest appearances from Mark Lanegan and Robert Pollard.

2. The Psychotic Monks "Silence Slowly and Madly Shines"

"Silence Slowly and Madly Shines" is one of the most menacing albums you will hear anywhere. It's dark, mysterious, psychedelic vibe draws you in and never lets you go. This Paris based unit are absolutely crushing and this album is full of non stop mayhem.

3. Washed Out "Mr. Mellow"

Subliminal, hypnotic and totally inspiring. Washed Out literally out did themselves on this release. It's infectious beats and highly textured layers of sound radiate with beauty and the accompanying visuals are nothing short of stellar.

4. Joan Of Arc "He's Got The Whole This Land is Your Land in His Hands"

Always evolving, always innovating Joan Of Arc continue to impress after 20 years of making albums and relentless touring. "This Must Be The Placenta" is nothing short of a modern day anthem. Their show at The Satellite in LA this past February was also one of my favorites of the year.

5. Meatbodies "Alice"

Amazing songs, great vocals and frantic guitar tones fill this album from beginning to end. It's got such a "Cosmic" feel to it that brings to mind the likes of T Rex and Donovan mixed with a slight nod to Mercury Rev and early Flaming Lips. After countless listens this just gets better and better to me and certainly helps stimulate a good mood.

6. Ty Segall "Ty Segall"

One of the most proficient musicians in the game hits a home run here. "Break A Guitar" was pretty much the anthem of 2017 and I see no signs of this guy letting up any time soon.

7. Lee Ranaldo "Electric Trim"

Former Sonic Youth guitarist/vocalist channels his inner Beatles and Beach Boys spirit with this astonishingly beautiful album. It shows off a different side of Ranaldo and you also get the feeling he had an amazing time writing and recording these songs alongside a host of so many other amazing musicians.

8. Animal Youth "Animal"

An incredible blast of post punk bliss. Noise driven guitars and infectious melodies that drive you to dance. Simply put I've got nothing but LOVE for this record.

9. Thurston Moore "Rock N Roll Consciousness"

Thurston Moore delves into stories of his time in New York and draws you into his world of "Rock N Roll Consciousness". His signature guitar tones and lulling vocals have a very comforting feel throughout the album. Theirs a brilliant balance of tension and ambiance that really brings everything together and of coarse the drumming of Moore's longtime Sonic Youth bandmate Steve Shelly is always great to hear.

10. Palehound "A Place I'll Always Go"

Ellen Kempner is an amazing songwriter and her raspy voice and the catchy hooks that fill this album get me every single time. If you have not checkd out Palehound yet do yourself a favor and pick this album up.

11. CITE S/T

OK so this is an E.P. and not a full album but damn it's so good I had to include it on here. There's big, dangerous sounding guitars here and a thriving energy that's abrasive and mean. All the tracks are total barn burners. Can't wait to hear what's next from this Oakland based rock n roll machine.

12. Jesus And Mary Chain "Damage And Joy"

The bands first album in ages and it stands up well next to the bands previous releases. Some of the songs are retakes on tracks that had been released by Sister Vanilla or as lo-key solo tracks. All the trademark JAMC moments are here and I hope this record is the first of many more to come.

13. The Replacements "Replacements For Sale : Live At Maxwells".

What can ya say. One of the best bands of all time blasting through a raging set in as fine of form as four drunken idiots can. The first thing that comes to mind is just how amazing Bob Stinson sounds throughout this record. His playing is truly relentless and gives me chills every time I hear it. Excellent recording quality throughout that captures the raw energy of the performance without taking anything away from the grit. Highlights include classic Mat's standards like "I Will Dare", "Bastards Of Young" and "Takin A Ride" alongside covers of Kiss. T Rex, The Beatles and more. Essential from beginning to end.

14. Boss Hog "Brood X"

A no frills rock n roll record that's packed with bad ass song after bad ass song. There's some real ass shakers on here and tons of sick sounding guitar tones. Can't get enough.

15. Matthew Sweet "Tomorrow Forever"

Matthew Sweet is back with this brand new album "Tomorrow Forever" and it's full of all the key ingredients that make up an amazing Matthew Sweet record. Catchy hooks, melodic guitars and Sweet's signature vocal delivery. So fun to sing along to.

16. Guided By Voices "August By Cake"

Few musicians actually make it to their 5th album much less their 10th but there is a very minuscule group who can say they have made 100 albums. Off the top of my head I can think of maybe James Brown, Hawkwind and Merzbow. "August By Cake" is GBV founder Robert Pollard's 100th album and is also the bands first double album. Packed with amazing anthems like "Dr. Feelgood Falls Off The Ocean" and "5° Degrees On The Inside" the album marks the return of longtime guitarist Doug Gillard and first appearance by new acquisition Bobby Bare Jr. both of whom make their presence felt in full effect.

17. Unsane "Sterilize"

Unsane's latest album "Sterilize" counldn't have come at a better time. Chris Spencer's trademark salty snarl and crushing guitar riffs ring out in FULL EAR BLEEDING FASHION while the pin point precision of bassist Dave Curran and drummer Vincent Signorelli show why they are one of the most punishing rhythm sections of all time.

Alan Vega "DTM" Single (Fader Label)

"DTM" is the first single from Alan Vega's new album "It". The record is his first posthumous album since his passing last summer and it is nothing short of classic. It's raunchy, distorted beat and Vega's trademark voice moving over top of the sea of industrial swing, literally gives me chills while listening. It's primal nature and no punches pulled stance are everything that's great about rock n roll. There will never be anyone else like Alan Vega. RIP.

Dog. Paper. Submarine "Post Human Melodies" LP (dogpapersubmarine.bandcamp.com)

Over the last two years Sweden's Dog. Paper. Submarine have truly become one of my favorite bands. Their thunderous power pop/indie rock approach and introspective songwriting abilities shine brightly on this brand new album titled "Post Human Melodies". Highlights include the high energy, sonic power of "Baby Machine, soothing acoustic based "Reason" and hook filled barn burner "Praise The New Bones". This is really a stacked album from begging to end. It never let's up, it just keeps pounding you with great song after great song. Get into it!!!

Highland Eyeway "Dark Waters/Xen" E.P. (highlandeyeway.bandcamp.com)

Vancouver based post punk/shoegaze unit Highland Eyeway impress on their latest two song E.P. Up first is the wandering feel of "Dark Waters" which captures the perfect balance of driving rock n roll intensity and moody ethereal bliss. It's got just the right amount of noise and grit to meshes perfectly with it's elegance and grace. "Xen" is even more hypnotic in delivery as it's pounding beat sets the pace while layers of dark psych filled sounds loom over a sea of blistering guitar leads. The two songs pair together in the perfect way making it one of the most intense and introspective new listening experiences you will hear all year. Highly recommended.

My Home Is The Sea S/T E.P. (myhomeisthesea.bandcamp.com)

There are so many amazing bands coming out of Philly these days and My Home Is The Sea are no exception. Highlighted by the captivating vocal deliver of Natalie Wimberg their self titled debut E.P. offers up 5 spectacular songs full of top notch musicianship and diverse instrumentation. The passionate sounds of "Chase Something" offer up an "other worldly" flair to the mix as an infectious guitar riff carries you through a vast array of beautiful atmospheric sounds. There's a mysterious approach to tracks like "Do As your Told" and "No Ones Daughter" that really put things over the top. I've been enjoying these songs over and over and hear something new that I missed each time. The layers of sonic textures that flow throughout the tracks are sure to make a lasting impact on your psyche. Hands down one of the best records I've hear from beginning to end in some time.

Lee Ranaldo "Circular (Right As Rain)" Single (Mute)

Lee Ranaldo is back with this absolutely beautiful new single from his upcoming album "Electric Trim". It starts with a swirling sea of hypnotic sounds that move like psychedelic waves that echo the spirits of "Revolver" ear Beatles and The Byrds. Ranaldo's vocal phrasing shines in peak form and the songs arrangement is truly incredible. Can't wait to hear the rest of the record. "electric Trim" is due out September 15th courtesy of Mute Records.

Yucky Duster "The Ropes" Single (Infinity Cat Recordings)

This latest single and video from indie rockers extraordinaire Yucky Duster is simply second to none. Drawing from classic 60's psych ah la The beach Boys "The Ropes" is one of the bands best songs yet. It's catchy chorus and jangling guitars are subliminally infectious and sure to get you singing along in no time. Check a check a check it out.

17 Favorite Songs Of 2017 So Far

So 2017 is nearly half over and it's been a phenomenal year for music so far. So many amazing new albums and songs. Here's a rundown on 17 of my favorite songs that have come out so far.

1. The Psychotic Monks "It's Gone"

"It's Gone" the opening piece from The Psychotic Monks latest album "Silence Slowly and Madly Shines" is one of the most menacing songs you will hear all year. It's dark, mysterious, psychedelic vibe draws you in and never lets you go. Absolutely crushing.

2. Mayflower Madame "Drown"

Released just before their first U.S. tour "Drown" is one of Mayflower Madame's darkest and most impressive tracks to date. Look for a new album from this Norwegian psych rock outfit later this year.

3. A Deer A Horse "Backswimmer"

A Deer A Horse have been one of my favorite bands over the last few years and "Backswimmer" the title track from their latest E.P. ushers in a new direction and even more sense of power and determination to the bands sound. The trio will be out on the road touring all summer and fall.

4. Mariana Rivals "Take"

This California/Connecticut based synth pop unit deliver big on their latest single "Take" It's pumping bass line, passionate vocals and layers of shimmering synths are sure to get you singing along in no time.

5. News From Neptune "The Cold Open"

One of the most incredibly intricate and breathtakingly beautiful pieces you will hear anywhere. David Miller aka News From Neptune balances an array of sonic textures throughout this absolutely brilliant track.

6. Waxahatchee "Silver"

I can't get enough of this new track from Katie Crutchfield's Waxahatchee. It's one of the most infectious songs I've heard in a long time as the rich, melodic guitars and Crutchfield's voice are truly delightful.

7. Potential Red "Broken"

Canadian post punk/new wave outfit Potenial Red strike big on this brand new 4 song E.P. Lead off track "Broken" is an energetic piece full of swirling soundscapes and chiming guitars that fans of The Smiths and The Cure are sure to enjoy as it gets things started in grand fashion.

8. Telespace "A Click Away"

Swiss indie/psych unit Telespace quickly create an ethereal world through the cinematic sounds of "A Click Away" as it's calming dose of mind numbing guitars are soon followed by an intriguing left of center style vocal delivery.

9. Boss Hog "Shh Shh Shh"

This no frills groove filled rocker is one of the stand out tracks from the bands brand new album "Brood X".

10. Meatbodies "Creature Feature"

"Creature Feature" has an intensely odd slant to it all that's backed by a swaggering groove that reeks with undeniable appeal. It also includes some of the best guitar manipulation and fuzz driven leads you will hear anywhere that are equally matched by the deranged vocal cadence that sends the track into psychedelic overdrive.

11. Wanweird "Green Jelly"

Another fabulous track from Wanweird. This is the type of track that has just enough bounce to it that it's fun to sing along to but backs it up with a solid dose of 90's inspired rock n roll angst that pulls no punches.

My favoriute track from this Ohio based power pop/punk rock bands debut album. Get into it

13. Guided By Voices "5 Degrees On The Inside"

One o the stand out tracks from the bands latest offering "August By Cake" which happens to be the 100th LP of founding member Robert Pollards career. Here's to 100 more.

14. Thurston Moore "Smoke Of Dreams"

"Smoke Of Dreams" from the new Thurston Moore album "Rock N Roll Consciousness" is a hazy, laid back number that reflects on his times in New York City and the underlying mystic of the past that surrounds it. There's a bit of a cathartic element to the song as if Moore is giving you a tour of his old haunts and allowing a bit of insight into a lost world.

15. Mathew Sweet "Trick"

"Trick" has all the key ingredients that make up an amazing Matthew Sweet song. Catchy hooks, melodic guitars and Sweet's signature vocal delivery.

16. faUSt "Lights Flickr"

From their brand new album "Fresh Air", "Lights Flickr" features the lyrics "Lights Flickr as I blink my eyes to the beat to the beat to the beat" as a frantic saxophone and sea of feedback blast over top of a thunderous beat. What more could you ask for???

17. Beach House "Chariot"

From the bands new "Rarities and B Sides" album, "Chariot" sounds like it could have been part of the soundtrack to a lost David Lynch film. Truly beautiful from beginning to end.

Mark Lanegan Band "Nocturne" Single (marklanegan.com)

A cagey darkness looms throughout the latest Mark Lanegan Band single "Nocturne". It's haunting, it's primal and it carries a significant amount of weight throughout. Lanegan's stern, stoic voice is surrounded by layers of glistening synths and tension filled guitar leads. There's an industrial type flair that falls underneath everything and gives it a sense of danger and mystery. It's a brilliant performance that draws you in and leaves you on a never ending road lost in the middle of nowhere as you long to find your way back home. The new Mark Lanegan Band album "Gargoyle" will be out on April 28th via Heavenly Recordings.

Niko Yoko "I Love N.Y." E.P. (nikoyoko.bandcamp.com)

Paris based indie pop outfit Niko Yoko return with a spectacular new E.P. of catchy uptempo tracks that will have you singing along in no time. Opening number "Casual Friday" is full of melody and charm and sports a head nodding beat while "Sunday Girl" makes great use of full bodied guitar chords that sparkle from start to finish. "Sun Down" is the perfect song for spring as it's effects driven riff and rich harmonies make an impact alongside waves of atmospheric bliss. Everything winds down with the gliding sounds of "To The Metro Void" which sweeps you away with it's classic brand of shimmering 3 chord indie pop proficiency. A top notch release that comes highly recommended.

Tall Tall Trees "SeagullxEagle" Single (Joyful Noise Recordings)

Tall Tall Tress really impress with this new single and video from their latest album "Freedays". It makes me think what it would have been like if Marc Bolan and Roy Clark had joined Donovan and The Beatles on their journey to India to embrace the teachings of the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi and a late night jam session had been recorded. There's an inviting glow and warm energy that surrounds the track, welcoming you into a world that's enlightening, happy and psychedelic. The instrumentation is also off the charts as a sea of strings and an infectious bass line blend beautifully with founder Mike Savino's signature banjo playing and uplifting vocal presence. An excellent track from an amazing album. Get into it.

The Afghan Whigs "Demon In Profile" Single (Sub Pop)

The Afghan Whigs honestly do things they have never done on their upcoming album "In Spades" and "Demon In Profile" is a prime example of this. It's soulful, powerful vibe harnesses a certain anthem like quality that sprinkles in a touch of classic 70's glam. It's a truly inspiring track that showcases a seasoned band and all that they have learned since their inception in 1986. Whigs co-founder/bassist John Curley stated “Over the course of a lifetime, there are constants, and there’s also change. You see who’s dropped off the vine – who’s going in reverse, and who’s still by your side. It’s interesting to see where life takes you, and where it doesn’t. That’s the journey and it hasn’t stopped.”. "In Spades" will be out May 5th courtesy of Sub Pop.

The Melvins "A Walk With Love and Death" (Trailer)

So "A Walk With Love and Death" The Melvins first ever double LP and accompanying short film are still a few months away from release but I couldn't help write a bit about it and it's inspiring trailer. This Jesse Nieminen directed short looks to be a mind scrambling epic in the greatest possible way. According to drummer Dale Crover, “A Walk With Love and Death is one giant, dark, moody, psychotic head trip! Not for the faint of heart. You'll sleep with the lights on after listening”. Vocalist/Guitarist Buzz Osborne added “This was a huge undertaking. All three things: the album, the soundtrack and the film are benchmarks for us”. "A Walk With Love And Death" will be available July 7th courtesy of Ipecac recordings.

Australian ambient/experimental indie project Black Lining return with this blissful new single "The Lake" (After Dark). It's got a sleepy laid back appeal to it that is highlighted by the combination of a bright captivating guitar sound and rugged bottomless bassline. Together they ring out in a calming peaceful manner. It's straight forward beat works well alongside Black Lining founder Nicholas McMillan's straight forward lyrics and charming falsetto style vocal stance. This track is the type that makes the most out of each and every note by stretching the boundaries of a simple song structure as far as it can go. The result is a beautiful, soundtrack style performance that harnesses what the spirit of art, beauty and creativity are all about.

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah "Down" Single (Clap Your Hands Say Yeah Inc)

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah mastermind Alec Ounsworth is back with a new album titled "The Tourist". This is the first release since the departure of original drummer Sean Greenhalgh leaving Ounsworth at the helm to perform everything on the record himself. Lead single "Down" has a quirky, jerky base to it that eventually gives way to a driving beat and some searing guitar work as Ounsworth's fast paced and at time frantic yet soothing and psychedelic voice is incredibly enlightening. The song explores a wide range of tempos and sections that really mix things up and show alternating moods that also fall nicely together under one cosmic umbrella. It's futuristic, it's innovative and it's damn fine sounding. Can't wait to take in the entire release. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah are currently on a U.S. tour that runs through May 6th.

Mariana Rivals "Take / Chroma" E.P. (marianarivals.bandcamp.com)

California based synth pop unit Mariana Rivals deliver a pair of new tracks that are absolutely delightful. A wash of shimmering synths ring throughout the heavy groove based feel of "Take". It's pumping bassline and laid back rhythm are simply second to none while the mysterious yet soulful vocals put everything over the top and get you singing along in no time. "Chroma" is a bit darker and more subliminal. It's got a heavy feel to it that builds throughout and keeps you guessing at what will come next as it's cunning dynamics and atmospheric presence is as beautiful as it is enlightening. There's also an underlying orchestral element to it all that I enjoy very much. A captivating pair of songs that could easily serve as the soundtrack to a universe trillions of light years away.

Minus The Bear "Invisible" Single (Suicide Squeeze)

"Invisible", the lead single from Minus The Bear's new album "VOIDS" is nothing short of an anthem. Frontman Jake Snider's uplifting lyrics and energetic vocal cadence paired with the songs dynamic structure are sure to satisfy fans both old and new. "VOIDS" is the first record with new drummer Kiefer Matthias and he delivers big here as his tight, in the pocket playing gels well with guitarist Dave Knudson's unmistakable style and bassist Cory Murchy's thunderous tone. There's also the ever present underlying rhythm that has been the backbone of the bands sound for over 15 years. "VOIDS" is available today courtesy of Suicide Squeeze Records.

Telespace "A Click Away"/"Sexual Tension" (Double A​-​Side) 7" Single (telespace.bandcamp.com)

Hailing from Lausanne, Switzerland Telespace impress on this unbelievably charismatic Double A Side single. The band quickly create an ethereal world through the cinematic sounds of "A Click Away" as it's calming dose of mind numbing guitars are soon followed by an intriguing left of center style vocal delivery. It's subtle rhythm and rolling bassline accompany the track in fine form as this introspective piece glides through a vibrant realm of colorful sonic landscapes. The driving beat and chiming guitars of "Sexual Tension" provide the perfect backdrop for this undeniably infectious number. It's deceptive hooks and flavorful melodies give the track a shimmering flair that channels a theatrical spirit full of enlightening undertones that at times echo the spirit of classic Bowie. A spectacular pair of songs packaged in a delightful gatefold 7" sleeve available now from the bands bandcamp page. I can't wait to hear what comes next from this amazing indie psych outfit.

Thurston Moore "Cease Fire" Single (thurstonmoore.com)

What else can I say? This is classic Thurston Moore. Left of center guitar driven rock n roll at it's best. Backed by the incredible beat of guest drummer Jem Doulton along with guitarist Ames Sedwards and bassist Deb Googe "Cease Fire" is an incredibly contagious song full of intricate riffs and gliding angular textures. The track is a reaction to the horrors of gun violence that continues to plague our world. Moore recently stated...“Guns are designed to kill and we, as non-violent human beings, are against the killing of any person or animal.The song is also about the power of love, in all its freedom of choice. A power that no gun can extinguish as love will rule always. Melt down your guns and kiss your neighbor.” SPREAD THE LOVE!!!

Boss Hog "Wichita Grey" Single (In The Red Records)

Boss Hog is back and "Wichita Grey" is the first single from their upcoming four song Maxi-Disco 12-inch due out July 1st on In The Red. Cristina Martinez's vocals sound as electric as ever and are backed by the thunderous drumming of Hollis Queens, Jens Jurgensen seductive bass lines and Mickey Finn's droning keys. The guitar tones of the legendary Jon Spencer are sure to melt your speakers as his infectious riffs are dangerous, enigmatic and down right nasty. Legend has it that Boss Hog are internationally-known as New York City’s most provocative and original rock’n’roll band and I'd say "Wichita Grey" just might etch this statement in stone. The band begin a West Coast tour that on July 11th in Seattle.

Lost Gloss "Sometimes" E.P. (lostgloss.bandcamp.com)

Loving this fun lo-fi experimental E.P. from Lost Gloss out of the U.K. Things open up with an eerie intro simply titled "❂" before giving way to the wandering sounds of "Nothing's All Around" which features some really beautiful yet haunting guitar tones that sit well with the distant and looming vocal presence. "Tired Eyes" is a hazy, laid back instrumental while "Too Much" is a fine crafted blend of 80's new wave pop hooks and early 90's shoegaze that channels the likes of early New Order and MBV but with a more lo-fi bedroom style charm. The E.P. comes to a close with the collage like "Kaleidoscopic" which conjures up images of space stations and alien life some place on the other side of the galaxy.

Memory Of Elephants "Faux Carrion" E.P. (memoryofelephants.bandcamp.com)

Instrumental masterminds Memory Of Elephants deliver big with their latest E.P. "Faux Carrion". The technical riffs and phenomenal drumming alone make it a step above most as the level of musicianship is simply off the charts. "That Was A Warning Cone!" is nicely lined with layers of experimental sounds that flow like waves between the frantic rhythms and crushing guitar chords that run rampant throughout. "Chacking For Cwmbrân" fully explores the world of prog-rock and jazz while adding it's own experimental spin to things as there is an uplifting cinematic spirit to it all. "Who The Fuck Is Runcorn?" just might be the most aggressive track of the three as it begins at breakneck speed while the band come together like Voltron to create an incredibly gigantic sound. Hands down one of the best E.P.'s I've heard all year.

Merzbow, Haino, Pandi "An Untroublesome Defencelesness" (rarenoiserecords.com)

Legendary Japanese electronic noise artist Merzbow (aka Masami Akita) teams up with guitarist Keiji Haino and drummer Balazs Pandi for another example of extreme sonic experimentation in the form of "An Untroublesome Defencelessness". The album is a menacing collection of manic drumming, white noise and fierce power chords drenched with feedback. When asked about the collaboration Pandi explains, “When Masami and I did a gig in Osaka back then, we threw a couple ideas back and forth and decided that it would be great to try and form a trio with Haino-san. Keiji is like an infinite well of ideas. It’s incredible how he can push music and sounds into new directions. Sounds coming from him have way more qualities than the ones coming from most musicians, as he uses every possible way to alternate sounds and give them extra qualities that people just don’t know about.” It's a truly incredible collaboration to say the least.

Teenage Fanclub "I'm In Love" Single (teenage-fanclub.tmstor.es)

I am so excited about this new song and the upcoming Teenage Fanclub album "Here" as they are one of my long time favorite bands. The albums first single "I'm In Love" is a culmination of all the things that make this band great. It's jangling guitars and driving beat alongside the bands trademark vocal melodies shine throughout. The track is about finding yourself fully submerged in love and how wonderful it can be. It's bright and breezy and blissfully brilliant in every way. "Here" comes out on September 9th on the bands own PeMa label in Europe and on Merge in North America.

Tom Lockett "Feeling Bad" Single (Magic Cactus Records)

"Feeling Bad", the new single from former Electroshock Therapy frontman, Tom Lockett is a powerful number that combines great depression era folk with 60's psych and blues. I hear everything from early Marc Bolan to Woody Guthrie here as it sets a mood that is genuine and pure. The pumping organ and screaming harmonica add another dimension of excellence to this raw and rugged number. It really feels like you are sitting inside the room while the track is being cut as the co-production of Lockett and Shaun Lowe (producer of soul legends, The Drifters) works wonderfully. A remarkable achievement from an incredible singer songwriter. "Feeling Bad" is set for release as a limited edition CD on Lockett's own Magic Cactus Records on August 5th.
